Surnames: Weeks Weaks Ferguson Mavity Kaylor Weatherford Barnes
There was a William Weeks, sometimes spelled Weaks, living on Story Creek and Runnet Bag Creek in Henry Co., later Franklin Co., VA. about 1779-1788 according to records of these counties. William married Sarah Ferguson d/o John and Elizabeth Ferguson of Pigg River. William's first son was Henry Weaks born in Henry Co. VA on Jul 22, 1785. William Weaks sold his property on Runnet Bag Creek in 1786-87 to William Mavity of Franklin Co, VA. There were other Weeks living in this area and also Washington Co., VA, at this time, John and Elizabeth Weeks, a daughter Elizabeth Weeks who married Daniel Kaylor, and possibly a son Zachariah Weeks. These Weeks were later found in in Sullivan Co., NC/TN in 1796 & 1797 owning land on Reedy Creek near Kingsport. I am trying to find out if William Weeks/Weaks is related to these other Weeks mentioned.
William left Virginia before 1790, and was found on the Hertford Co. NC Census in 1790 as William Weakes, living nearby was Julin and Arthur Weakes. I have not yet found if he is related to these other Weakes. Two of William's Children were known to be born in NC were Rebecca Weaks born in Halifax Co. NC on Dec 23, 1791 and John F. Weaks, born in Hertford Co, NC on Dec 25, 1796.
By 1800 William was living in Montgomery Co. TN where he was listed as Wm. Weakes on the Tax list for that year possibly as a new tax payer. William bought land in Montgomery Co. TN and later Stewart Co., TN on Cub Creek and this is where his family settled.
William had 11 known children in all. Henry H. Weaks, Rebecca Weaks, Charles Weaks, John F. Weaks, George Milburn Weaks (who later moved to Morehouse Parish, LA), Thomas Weaks, Mary Weaks, Washington Lee Weaks, Frances Ann Weaks, and Elmyra C. Weaks. William married a second time in Stewart Co., TN to Mary R. Weatherford, who was believed to be the mother to his three youngest children.
It is believed that the subject of this post was born about 1760, but the birth locaation is unclear. Some family historians of this family show that he was born in Virginia or North Carolina, although the 1880 census for his youngest child Elmyra suggests that William was born in Maryland. According to Stewart Co., TN Deeds and Settlements, William Weaks Died in November 1838. It is not known when his first wife Sarah Ferguson Weaks died. There are several graves at the Weaks Cemetery at Cub Creek, but because there are no marked headstones it is unclear who is buried there.
Mary R. Weatherford was born about 1796 in NC. This is much later than most family historians for this family have recorded, as she was found to be living in Fulton, later Hickman Co., KY and is listed on the Census for these Counties in 1850 & 1860. Mary and her daughters Frances and Elmyra were living in the Household of William T. Barnes on these census records. Frances was the wife of William T. Barnes. Washington Lee Weaks is also shown as living in Hickman Co., KY. The death of Mary R. Weaks (Weatherford) is recorded in the Barnes Family Bible as April 12, 1866.
I am most interested in hearing from anyone with information on this William Weeks/Weaks in the years before 1800 when he was living in Virginia, and would also love to hear from anyone related to the Weaks family of Stewart County Tennessee.
