William Weaks/Weeks of Henry & Franklin Co., VA

There was a William Weeks, sometimes spelled Weaks, living on Story Creek and Runnet Bag Creek in Henry Co., later Franklin Co., VA. about 1779-1788 according to records of these counties. William married Sarah Ferguson d/o John and Elizabeth Ferguson of Pigg River. William's first son was Henry Weaks born in Henry Co. VA on Jul 22, 1785. William Weaks sold his property on Runnet Bag Creek in 1786-87 to William Mavity of Franklin Co, VA. There were other Weeks living in this area and also Washington Co., VA, at this time, John and Elizabeth Weeks, a daughter Elizabeth Weeks who married Daniel Kaylor, and possibly a son Zachariah Weeks. These Weeks were later found in in Sullivan Co., NC/TN in 1796 & 1797 owning land on Reedy Creek near Kingsport. I am trying to find out if William Weeks/Weaks is related to these other Weeks mentioned.

William left Virginia before 1790, and was found on the Hertford Co. NC Census in 1790 as William Weakes, living nearby was Julin and Arthur Weakes. I have not yet found if he is related to these other Weakes. Two of William's Children were known to be born in NC were Rebecca Weaks born in Halifax Co. NC on Dec 23, 1791 and John F. Weaks, born in Hertford Co, NC on Dec 25, 1796.

By 1800 William was living in Montgomery Co. TN where he was listed as Wm. Weakes on the Tax list for that year possibly as a new tax payer. William bought land in Montgomery Co. TN and later Stewart Co., TN on Cub Creek and this is where his family settled.

William had 11 known children in all. Henry H. Weaks, Rebecca Weaks, Charles Weaks, John F. Weaks, George Milburn Weaks (who later moved to Morehouse Parish, LA), Thomas Weaks, Mary Weaks, Washington Lee Weaks, Frances Ann Weaks, and Elmyra C. Weaks. William married a second time in Stewart Co., TN to Mary R. Weatherford, who was believed to be the mother to his three youngest children.

It is believed that the subject of this post was born about 1760, but the birth locaation is unclear. Some family historians of this family show that he was born in Virginia or North Carolina, although the 1880 census for his youngest child Elmyra suggests that William was born in Maryland. According to Stewart Co., TN Deeds and Settlements, William Weaks Died in November 1838. It is not known when his first wife Sarah Ferguson Weaks died. There are several graves at the Weaks Cemetery at Cub Creek, but because there are no marked headstones it is unclear who is buried there.

Mary R. Weatherford was born about 1796 in NC. This is much later than most family historians for this family have recorded, as she was found to be living in Fulton, later Hickman Co., KY and is listed on the Census for these Counties in 1850 & 1860. Mary and her daughters Frances and Elmyra were living in the Household of William T. Barnes on these census records. Frances was the wife of William T. Barnes. Washington Lee Weaks is also shown as living in Hickman Co., KY. The death of Mary R. Weaks (Weatherford) is recorded in the Barnes Family Bible as April 12, 1866.

I am most interested in hearing from anyone with information on this William Weeks/Weaks in the years before 1800 when he was living in Virginia, and would also love to hear from anyone related to the Weaks family of Stewart County Tennessee.

Dawn Weaks Morrill
I don't know if there is a connection between the Yarbrough's and my Weaks family, and I am not sure where Shabel Weaks fits in but thanks for that information on Pope, Il, I will look into it.

I did see a Bio on the Stewart County website for a Silas Yarbrough, b. 1827, son of Nathan and Mary (Carter) Yarbrough. They did move to Stewart County, TN from North Carolina abt 1806. The William Weaks family also moved to TN from NC around 1800, first Montgomery Co. and then settled in Stewart Co..

If you do find a connection between the two families, please contact me at dawnmorrill@citlink.net
Dawn
I wish I could help you more. I have a John Yarbrough who married a woman b.1812 named Mary. I believe that John's father is Larkin Yarbrough who married Nancy Slaughter, daughter of George and Tabitha Slaughter. Larkin died 1842 in Stewart CO. TN. John and Nancy appear in Pope CO. IL in 1845. There are Weaks living around them in Stewart CO. TN and also in Pope CO. IL. I just came back from a visit to Pope CO. IL and I found that Shubel Weaks has a will there. Several Weaks names appear in that county. I am trying to find out if there is a relationship between the two families. I will be happy to give you any information that I have. Stewart CO. court house burned 3 times, and they went to Hardin CO. IL where the court house burned twice. If I can help, you can always contact me.
ramona2362@hotmail.com

Re: 1840 census Stewart CO. TN

I don't know if there is a connection between the Weaks and Yarbrough families, but in my Weaks file I have written a note for Elizabeth Pearce Weaks:

On the 1830 census it appeared that Charles and Elizabeth Weaks had no children. On the 1840 census, which was after Charles Weaks her husband had died in 1832, there is an Elizabeth Weaks with possibly 9 children. Could these be the children of Elizabeth's brother Abner Pearce and wife Rebecca Weaks Pearce. Weaks reasearch shows that Charles and Elizabeth Weaks had raised Rebecca's children after her death.

Are you a Weaks descendant? I have some information on William Weaks Sr. that shows he was first married to a Sarah Ferguson of Henry Co. (later Franklin Co.) Virginia. I think it was not until 1820-1830 that William married Mary R. Weatherford. Mary R. Weatherford Weaks moved to Fulton Co, Kentucky after William's death in Nov 1838, and she was shown on the 1850 and 1860 census as living in the household of William T. Barnes, who was married to Mary's daughter Fanny Weaks Barnes. Mary R. Weatherford Weaks was shown to have been born about 1796 in NC, which would make her to young to have been the mother of the older children of William Weaks Sr. It is possible that the first eight children (Henry H., Rebecca, Charles, William C., John F., George Milburn, Thomas E., and Mary) were the children of the marriage of William Weaks Sr. and Sarah Ferguson. I am currently working on this Weaks Family history and would like to connect with any descendands of William Weaks who is interested in this research.

Dawn

Your William S. Weaks is probably from the John F. Weaks lineage, 7th son of William and Mary Weaks (177?-1838) and (17?- 1848)respectively. Their son John (1796 - 1838) was married to Delila Gatlin (1806 - 1841) and parents to William C. Weaks (1826 - 1908), Ephram Parsons Weaks (1829 - 1906), Nancy Caroline (1831 - 1897), Parazade Elizabeth (1832 - 1903), James Henry Weaks (1835 - 1913), Poly Jane (1837 - 1846). Contact me offline for full lineage and include where you are down the line. This Weaks family were from Stewart County, TN.

I am a desendant of the Weaks family. Could this possibly be the same Weaks family? My mothers mother was Mildred Virginia Weaks, She was from Little Rock, Arkansas.
For some reason or another when she married my grandfather there was apparently a dispute about it, and the families really didn't keep incontact to much after they moved to Michigan. My moms name is Katharine Arnold born to the parents of Horace Dale Arnold and Mildred Virginia Weaks
Mildred was born August 07,1919 in Truman Arkansas.
Mildreds mother was Ruth Haynes and her father was Robert (Pete) Weaks. He had a sister and brother named Raymond and Elizabeth who married a Darnell, Raymond and Elizabeth were from Memphis Tenn. Robert Weak's mother was Sallie Weaks Varble she died 1958. There are several more that I can't put in place because of no one to cotact. They are as followed:
Daisy Hughes(Haynes) Her parents were Nancy Cooper and Ben Hughes he had a sister named Nancy Noe
William Denton Haynes
Nancy Cooper
Ben Hughes; Ben's father was Daniel Hughes.and last but not least Daniel Hughes was the brother of the famous Howard Hughes......
Reverand Edgar Griffin
Miner Griffin of Conway, Arkansas
Priston Kentucky- Haynes:
Richard Haynes- Caroline Mcgawin (Irish)
their children; Joe, Becky married Theodore Mitchell
Please if there is anyone who can connect with anyone in this group cotact me at reida_good@hotmail.com
I would be greatful to answer any and all e-mails.

In my searching many years ago, it appeared to me that there was no surname spelled Weaks until fairly recently. I never did find where it came from, except for a family tradition that an ancestor moved across a state line and changed the spelling of his name after a fight where he seriously injured a man. Your grandmother went to Oregon from where? Was she born in Tennessee or Mississippi? When?

Non-I.D. information includes all facts told to the adoption agency at the time of adoption -- EXCEPT the names of the parents. Usually includes some personal family information such as age, state of birth, race, religion, and occupation of parents and other family members, sometimes cause of and age at death of grandparents, etc. I believe you can get this from the court where the adoption took place. There may be a fee. Good luck!

Our own Weaks family: William S. Weaks/Weeks (depending on which document) born Dec. 29, 1828 somewhere in TN. Married first a Jane _______, and after her early death married Mecky DAY. Any help would be very welcome.
Dorothy
Actually, my mom's family were descendants of Weaks/Weeks. Robert Weaks was listed in Newton County, Texas and later Angelina County, Texas. Whether a mis-spelling of the name or originally Weaks were the correct spelling, this was later changed to Weeks. Also, sometimes the census takers versions of spelling contributed to versions of spellings. We were in Texas as early as 1836. Would love to correspondent with anyone connected to Robert Weeks/Ann White. E-mail ahumble@lcc.net
