I'm mostly speculating here, but I am looking for information regarding an Allen J. (possibly James) Weathers who was first a carriage maker (in Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama) and later a farmer in/around Talladega, AL. He was married to Nancy C. (possible a second wife) and in 1850 they had five children living at home -- Sarah C., Patrick, Henry, John, and Alice L. It's Patrick I am most interested in. Does anyone have a middle initial? I'm trying to determine if this was the same person who married the sister of my 2nd Great Grandmother in Talladega. The Wedding Announcement from the Talladega paper says that P. S. Weathers married Sallie L. Stone on September 15, 1863. I think Sallie died a little over two years later and P. S. probably remarried. There is a P. S. Weathers listed in the 1870 Alabama census in Hale County, Alabama with wife W. S. (Unknown) and daughters Fannie (b. about 1873) and Belle (born probably in March 1870). Any info would be appreciated. Art

Lula Weathers Loe - Mother's heroic deed!

My grandmother often told of a story about how one of her sisters was killed by a train while trying to save her two sons. Here is the actual newspaper story taken straight from the Columbus Commercial Dispatch.

Thursday, March 26, 1914

Southern Train No. 12 Kills Two

Mrs. Lula Lowe (sic) and little son die under locomotive's wheels.

Steens is scene of terrible accident - Two lives lost - One badly injured

In a heroic effort to save her two children, Mrs Lula Lowe and an eighteen months old son, Cunwood, were run over and crushed to death by a Southern train about four o'clock Monday afternoon near their home at Steens. Birdel, the six year old son of Mrs. Lowe, who was with his little brother on the railroad tracks at the time was knocked down and received painful, though not serious injuries.
Train No. 12 in charge of conductor R.D. Taylor and engineer Amzi Cheatham due to arrive at Steens at 3 o'clock, was more than an hour late. Mrs. Lowe, who lived near the tracks, heard the approaching train and knowing her children to be in danger, rushed to them. She was just a moment too late, and in an effort to snatch the baby from under the wheels of the locomotive, both she and the infant were mangled to death. The older child saw the oncoming engine and jumped from the track, and in making his escape received painful injuries.
Mrs. Lowe was a devoted wife, a painstaking and loving mother and her courage and heroism will be a living monument to her loved ones and friends. The remains of the unfortunate woman and her baby were carried to Liberty cemetery, about 5 miles east of Steens, for internment, the funeral having occurred there at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon.

Re: Willis Weathers Jr/Lydia Landers

Hi Brenda,

Thanks for responding! The parents of my Willis Weathers may have been Mary Polly (Terry or Weathers) and Willis (Sr.???) or they may have just been related. I have seen it both ways. I am leaning now to the idea that the parents of my Willis(1807-1864) was Isham Weathers and he may have been the brother to the Willis that was married to Mary Polly. There were SO MANY Ishams, Williss, and Williams!!

My Willis was married to Lydia Landers. She is the most likely candidate for being a full-blooded indian.

There children were William(my Ggrandfather), Mary, Isham, Sarah, Rhoda, Angelina, Susan, Mitchell and Perry.

I am not having any luck in finding the relatives of Lydia Landers and that maybe supports the notion that she was an indian.

One little bit of speculation is the following:
My grandmother not only said that she was 1/4 (Cherokee) Indian, but that The story was that her grandfather went to NC by wagon to get a 'millstone' and came back to georgia with it PLUS he had an Indian women with him too and that they married. That was her Grandmother. What makes this more interesting was that the two sides of my grandmother's
family were Weather's and Bush's. In the 1830's both families were living in Fayette and Newton county area of Georgia. The Bush's were MILLERS and they operated a mill in the Rockbridge area. So if it was Willis Weathers that came back with an Indian, then the families most likely knew each other at that time. It is also possible that yy Willis had some amount of Indian blood or he probably would not have been able to leave that area of NC with an Indian maiden.

I'd love to know your thoughts and how all of this matches up with your family.

Richard

I have a Weathers line in SC also. Not sure if we connect but thought I would check anyway just incase. I am not as far back as you, but I haven't been working on this line for long. I have a Joseph C Weathers B:1850 who Married Sara Kirby B: abt. 1857. I believe (based on census) that his father was William Weathers married to America Land. In the census records they all say that they are from SC, but you know how that can go. I have more info if our lines are connected somehow. Regina
