I just have to address this constantly continous error that keeps appearing online. Many researchers keep publishing that Johannes Martinus Weatherwax married Hanna Premmer and second Elizabeth. This is grossly incorrect and totally inaccurate.
In Jones "The Palatine Families of New York 1710" page:1095
he states:
(x) Johannes on Rhinebeck rollds 1765-1771. He married Anna Premmer.
(xi) Johan Martin, bpt 13 Jan 1741, he married Elisabetha
That is all he says except that right after Johannes in para is the word "WILL" indicating to all that he verified Johannes existence based on a Will!
Johannes did in fact marry Hanna Premmer and lived and resided in Schaghticoke,Rensselaer co NY until his death on 11 March 1818. He wrote a WILL Dated 3 Oct 1814, which I have transcribed and placed online on the Rensselaer Co USGENWEB site for all to use a reference. No baptismal or birth record for Johannes has been located either by Jones or myself, but numerous legal records prove his existence.
NY State Archives microfilm of revolutionary war records avail at the NYSA in Albany. This microfilm contains the only remaining copies of Revolutionary war records filmed after the Archives fire. Contained within this microfilm are two important documents for Weatherwax Researchers.
A. Is a complete Muster/payroll list of the 14th albany co Militia. Contained on that listing are the following Weatherwax's: Peter,Johannes,Andrew,David,Martin. All brothers, all memebers of the 14th Militia.
B. A copy of a handwritten pay voucher requesting that Hanes Weatherwax be allowed to pick up Militia payments due to himself, brother David and Martin and Jacob Weatherwax.
(note that Jacobs names is lined out on the original document)
This microfilm of original records clearly establishes in legal records that Martin and Johannes or Hanes were two separate individuals persons. Not one! It also again establishes that Martin or Martinus never used the prefix Johan before his given name of Martin. In fact no document I have found shows his using anything but MARTIN throughout his whole adult life.
Johannnes or Hanes wrote a Will on 3 Oct 1813, This Will was proved on 11 Mar 1818. I have transcribed this Will for all to use and place it online on the USROOTSWEBSITE for Rensselaer co NY. Clearly he identifies his wife as Hannah and his children and spouses.(including a Goewey/Weatherwax marriage of his daughter)
Lastly we have on the same Website the Will of both of these brother's father: Andreas Weatherwax, dated 18 Jan 1780, proved 10 May 1784. (copy also in Fernows Calender of Wills a NY State Genealogical research standard source for early wills)
In that Will the father clearly deeds to :
"My son Hannes 231 -3/4 acres of land, then to Martin Widderwax(sp) 235-1/2 acres of land. Note that this is another Legal document identifying both brothers as separate individuals.
Now an important point here which many researchers do not know or fail to realize is that Martin Weatherwax b:1741 and his brother David Weatherwax b: 1747 were very close throughout their entire lives. In fact they both sold their farms on Thomahock Creek and moved to Clinton co NY together and settled on adjoining farmes in Peru. Both were land owners there and appear on road tax lists dated for 1796 in Peru. Since I descend directly from David Weatherwax and our two families were so intertwined I have been researching both lines seriously for the past 25 years. But It was not until last year that I and two other researchers clearly identified both wives of Martin Weatherwax. The Elizabeth referred to by Jones was in fact Elizabeth Goewey the daughter of Peter S. Goewey and his wife Maria E. Young or Jungh. Although no marriage record has been found other baptismal records and family records
Including the Goewey Family genealogy were used to establish
her maiden name.
Like his brother Johannes, Martin has the same legal documents identifying him as separate individual. Also in the case of Martin we have a document of baptism dated 13 Jan 1741 at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Red Hook. It clearly identifies his parents as : Andries Widderwachs (sp)/ Johanna Edeli. He is listed as Johan Marte (the only place he is so identified) the sponsors of the baptism were: Marte Edeli/ Anna Edeli (his mothers parents).
All documents after this document identify him only as "Martin Weatherwax" never Johan or Johannes Martin Weatherwax. In addition to his Albany co militia records Martin served on two ocassions with the Vermont Militia once as an officer and once as a Sargent.
NARA Records also indicate he served in a Bateau regiment in Albany (a boat man).
I also have copies of various Deeds written by Martin to his children all recorded in Clinton county NY.
Martins first wife died just before the USC of 1800. In this census she is missing and Martin has very young children.
The next door neighbor of both David and Martin Weatherwax in Peru was Benjamin Welden. This same (Welden) family is contained in baptismal records along with Martin and his first wife on the same day in Rensselaer, also included are the parents of Elisabeth Goewey.
Benjamin Welden married Hannah Goewey ;sister of Elisabeth Goewey in Rensselaer co NY. They too migrated to Peru Clinton co NY and he also appears in the 1796 Peru Tax listing. Benjamin Welden died in 1803. The adminstrator of his estate was his brother in law Martin Weatherwax. The Widow Hannah Weldon married Martin Weatherwax on 27 Jun 1805. This marriage is found in the records of First Lutheran Church of Albany NY. (note this marriage appears to be from a traveling circuit minister to be recorded in this church) Later research using the death records of the children of Hannah Goewey/Welden/Weatherwax clearly identify he maiden name as "GOEWEY" confirming prior asumptions that she was a Goewey.
After Martins marriage to Hannah Welden he fathered two more children, making a total of 11 children by two wives.
Martin died intestate in Clinton co NY on 27 May 1813. Another legal document submitted by Hannah Goewey/Welden/Weatherwax for her dower rights was found dated 25 Apr 1821.
Martins brother David my ancestor would die in Peru in the spring of 1831.
No one should continue assuming, posting both of these brothers as being one. All references cited within this posting are clearly available both at the NY State Archives, online on the old USGENWEB site for Rensselaer co NY, and in Fernows Calendar of Wills. Additionallyl the first Federal Tax assesment of 1798 is available online on the website for Clinton co NY. This confirms the presence and land ownership in 1798 in the town of Peru for David Weatherwax, Martin Weatherwax, and Benjamin Welden.
More docuemnetation on these individuals will be contained in the Weatherwax genealogy I am currently editing for publication in Spring of 2010 which coincides with our arrivial in N. America in 1710.
