My grandmother Violet Elizabeth was Theopolis and Julia's daughter. She married my grandfather also a Webster (Ovet Earl) in Kenton Co., Ky in 1915. My father born in 1916 was Charles Edward. Info can be found by googling John Wiley Burns Webster, who is my great great grandfather on Ovet's side. They are from the Grant County and Gallatin County area. She was a gentle little round lady, kinda like Mrs. Claus. She had tiny hands that could embroider lace on a Barbie wedding dress, grow any flower and bake wonderful bread. She never said a bad word about anyone. I miss her.
Looking for help with Ellen Webster b1826 of Coppull Lancashire, England. She had an illegitimate son Nathen b1852 Coppull. He later married Ann Fisher b1850 in Coppull 16th May 1875. On the marraige certificate it lists Nathens father as Thomas Holding of Coppull. (his birth certificate he is unknown).
On the 1881 census he is know as Webster, but on 1861 I can only locate a Nathen Holding, who's parents were Thomas & Ellen Holding. all the birth dates match, but I can't find a record of their marriage (did they marry?).
Nathen died 1926 in Coppull & is a Webster on his headstone.
Is Nathen Webster & Nathen Holding the same person or is this a coincidence?
Please help
Tracey Bentham

Thank You Jody! I was going through clarifying items and entering back up documentation and came across the listing. Tried to find a listing on Rootsweb but nothing. We (researchers) have been told there was 9 children born to the union of Banghart Dewitt and Maria(h) Taylor but only 5 is accounted for thus still searching for the other 4! I thought my "find" was just too easy to be true but like the rest of my fellow researchers, we just keep on looking dont we?
Thanks again - the info is appreciated!

Hi, Dee.
This John H. is John Harmon, son of Alvah, son of my Amos. By the way, I found a county biography that said his name was William (Amos, that is). Still checking that out. Since you and I go way back in correspondence, and know each other's family tree and connection, I don't have to explain that.

Harriet is Harriet "Augusta" DeWitt. They were married 11/30/1859 in Kanakakee. John Harmon was born in Newton, Fountain, IN on 1/10/1835, if that helps you place him. Chauncey, as you know, is Amos (William)'s brother. Alvah Sr. was their brother, too, according to my family lists.

Harriet's father is Austin DeWitt. Her mother was Sally Ann Thacker. She was born 9/1842 in New York.

That's most of what I know. Hope it helps. Jody.
Richard Webster of Massachesetts

Hello. My Great Grandmother's name was Eleanor L Cote (may have had the two dots over the "o"), born 19 April 1926 in Holyoke Massachusetts, died 11 December 2001 in Lawrenceburg Indiana. She married a man by the name of Richard Webster (while still living in Mass. I believe) and they had two children, Beverly and Donna (my biological grandmother). Absolutely NOTHING is known of Richard Webster...he and my Great Grandmother split up when the children were quite young. No one knows what happened, if he left or if she did, what the reasons were etc. Some people in my family have even gone so far as to say, only half jokingly, that she killed him and burried him in the back yard, lol (she was a rather...unpleasant woman)! Its almost as if he just disappeared...and all she would ever say to anyone was that he was a bum and a concert pianist. She took every bit of helpful information to her grave.

If anyone has ANY information on this man PLEASE contact me at igby416@yahoo.com, thanks!

looking for information on this gentleman...the only information I have on him is from the 1880 census
His name is listed as
A. B. Webster born about 1841 in Michigan both parents born in New York
He is the 2nd husband of my great great grandmother Cordelia Amy/Amie Robinson
They would have been married and he would of died sometime between 1771 and 1887....1870 she is married to James E. Robinson and Jul 4 1887 Cordelia married David Lowe.
Also on the 1880 census, all of Cordelias children have the Webster last name, but thier last name was Robinson, she seemed to like to do this to her children.
Thank you,
Jenna

Hello Linda.

Robert and Henry seem to be very popular in some of the Webster families. A sister of my GGG granny, Elizabeth Smith nee Webster married into the Roberts,s . She was a Sarah Webster. Both of these daughters of a Henry Webster and possibly the Henry buried in Derrylossary. Sarah married Joshua Roberts in Wicklow, but this Roberts family seems to originate from the south of Carlow, nearly Wexford. A townland known as Deerpark which is just north of Bunclody. They married in the 1840,s. Joshuas father was a John, but he was married to a Kinch from outside Gorey.

John

Thanks for replying John.
I looked at your initial message with your Webster families.
I have a family listing who moved to Ontario Canada abt 1830 via Eaton, NY. I mention this because I wonder a connection bc of the given name similarities: Robert Webster Sr. (1785-1836) and Elizabeth (1784-1855) born Wicklow. Their children: Thomas, Robert, George, Isaac, Mary John, Elizabeth and and unknown daughter.

I notice you have Roberts as a family name. My Great Great grandfather was John Roberts born 1800 in Co. Carlow, Ireland married Elizabeth Earl(e)who was supposedly from around Bagenalstown Co Carlow. They emigrated to Ontario,Canada around 1837. Their kids: William, Edward, John, Joshua, Henry, Thomas, Rosanna,George Earl and Annie. Any recognition??

Hope so.
Linda If you would rather email directly, add hotmail.com to moncrieffla

Hello.
Derrylossary graveyard has two Webster headstones to the back of the ruined Church if my memory serves me correctly. One is to a family of Websters from down around Kilcoole which I have found no connection with yet.The other is for a Henry Webster erected by his son George. I believe this Henry to be my GGG grandfather.I have found other Websters buried in Derrylossary who I know I have a connection with but unfortunately there are no headstones for them. At the moment I am working on the presumption that my Websters may not have been from Derrylossary or from the area but actually married into the Mahons who seem to have been a strong family in the area and it is possibly this connection which brought them to be buried there.

John.

Hello John,
I am interested in your Websters from Derrylossary/
Roundwood.
I am trying to connect a Sarah Webster b abt 1789 married to Henry Berry b abt 1784. They emigrated to Madison County NY with other Irish Protestants abt 1806 having many children, some who immigrated to Middlesex Co, Ontario, Canada. I also would like to connect Elizabeth (Hulda?)Webster married to John Belton also found in Madison Co at the same time. I think the Websters might be sisters. Elizabeth had a brother Robert. I actually visited the cemetery in Derrylossary in Wicklow before I knew I was connected!
I am hopeful!
Thanks

My daughter is going to a Scottish festival this weekend and googled Webster+McGregor and your message came up. What are the chances of you answering my message five years later, and less than one month before she googled?!

Anyway, you must be Elinor, Corey, Benjamin or Matthew. I met your grandparents, Gwen and Charles, in Hamilton when I was gathering information and later when we had a family reunion in 2004. The funny thing is initially I never intended on meeting relatives. I was so excited about learning the family history and where the family was from, going backwards in time. Yet meeting relatives ended up being the best part. It was great to meet living relatives and hear the variety of stories that had been passed down. To be honest, I don't think I could have ever figured it out without talking with relatives. It was an awesome experience. Gwen has a copy of the book I put together. I got back to the 1600s with the Websters, but only went back as far as Hannah McGregor's parents, John and Mary in the early 1800s. If you're researching them please let me know what you find.

When I started researching the Websters we didn't know Archibald's name and we thought Hannah's last name was Geiger. Everyone in Hamilton knew Archibald was the father and different relatives had a different last name for Hannah, Gregor and McGregor. When I went to the Hamilton cemetery and found Archibald's grave, I found that he was buried by his parents. His father's headstone read, "John Webster, native of Banffshire, Scotland." From there I was able to go back many generations until I ran into a father named John Webster, no mother's names were listed back in the early 1600s and there were two John Websters about the same age that could have been the father. No way to tell who was the father so I decided that was a good place to stop. The records before that were more difficult to read and were also in Latin.

At the reunion someone (might have been Robert Eastwood who was married to Vera Dodson (deceased), mentioned I didn't have a couple of Dodson sisters in the book and there were a few corrections. He said the sisters were real estate agents. I never had contact with him to get the names or corrections. He also mentioned there were many photos of the Dodsons and other relatives. There could be McGregor or Dingwall photos among them.

Anyway, I know Gwen wanted a family tree made. I made one at the time of the reunion but it didn't include everyone (like your part of the family and mine - Alexander and Daniel.) I've just never pulled it together to try it again. I do have more copies of the loose leaf book on the Websters if you or anyone is interested. I was charging $25.00 for the book to help cover the cost of printing, etc. Believe me, it doesn't begin to cover the cost of this project, but it was a labor of love and information well worth sharing with the family. I don't know what the cost of postage would be to mail it. You could also copy whatever you like out of Gwen's book.

Gwen mentioned Hannah McGregor's brothers came to Michigan and there was a town named after them. I did find a town McGregor or Gregor in the thumb, but it didn't sound like the same family. I hadn't checked further.

Thank you for answering my posting. You must be doing some family history of your own. If there is anything I can help with, let me know. Say hello to Gwen for me.

Carolyn Jones
Waterford, MI

Thomas Webster of Upton, Massachusetts

Ancestral File says that Thomas and his wife were probably born and married in England. If so, they probably landed at Boston, did not stay there long, and moved inland. In Genealogy Forum I have seen a statement that these Websters are related to the Websters of New Hampshire (Daniel Webster's line). If so, there seems to be a generation gap that makes linkage problematical.

Thomas was born ca. 1723 (his wife in 1725), which was not a time of much immigration to New England, and what there was came mostly from Ireland (mainly Ulster Scots, although some of the colonists of the Ulster plantation were English). He is not likely to be any of the persons named as an immigrant "Thomas Webster" in Coldham's various Passenger Lists (the dates of transportation don't work well]. People who wanted land would usually go to Pennsylvania or Virginia if they had any choice in the matter and wanted cheap land, which was what most people wanted. Why would he choose Upton (having lived previously for brief periods in Sutton and Uxbridge)? One clue may lie in his religion. Two of his sons, Jonathan, a lay minister, and Samuel, a minister, were Baptists. Joseph Carpenter, a collateral ancestor of Jonathan's father-in-law in Dudley, also called Joseph Carpenter, was a founder of the Baptist church at Rehoboth. Although there do not seem to have been any Websters in that congregation at an early date. But there were two persons named Webster, William Jr. in 1746, and Benjamin in 1759, who died in Dudley, where a Baptist congregation had been active since 1744 if not earlier. Dudley is the town where we find the earliest probate records of Worcester County. So I think there is a reasonable chance that Thomas Webster was in Dudley before he went to Sutton, where there was another Baptist church that had been active from an even earlier date (1735). He was obviously a poor man, being warned out of Upton in 1750. So he could afford to be a non-conformist where a respectable man in the community with a position to protect would tend to be staunchly puritan. There were Websters at Richmond/Westerly, RI, and at various places in Connecticut. In fact, the naming customs in Thomas's family, using names like Jonathan, Benjamin, Samuel, and Mehitable, much resemble the names used among some of the descendants of Connecticut Governor John Webster. These names occur in other Webster families too, of course, but it is the grouping of the names that is distinctive in the Connecticut family. (N.B. Lists of children vary a little, and there may be no birth records for children born outside of the Connecticut towns where the Websters first settled.)

For example, Robert Webster (son of Governor John) had sons named Jonathan, Samuel, Benjamin and William. The first three names are also given to children of Thomas of Upton, and the last one appears in Dudley probate records. Robert had a brother named William who moved to Hadley, MA. No children are listed for this William (his known wife, accused as a witch but acquitted, was probably a second wife). Jonathan Webster (son of Jonathan, son of Robert, son of John) 1681-1758, had children named Jonathan, Mehitabel, and David, and possibly Benjamin, the same names given to three or four of the six children of Thomas Webster of Upton. Supposedly all of these people died in Hartford or Middletown, but I wonder. Two sons of Jonathan, son of Robert, are Samuel and Daniel. There does not appear to be any info about their descendants, if any. This is unfortunate because the name "Samuel" is a good prospect for the line we are seeking to establish. Those Websters who moved to Lebanon, CT, would be in the best geographical position to make a northward move to the vicinity of Dudley, although Middletown is not much farther away, and even Hartford is not too bad as long as one does not mind going diagonally across a lot of streams to get there. The Websters moving to Hadley (ex-Governor John and three of his sons) did so because they disagreed with the plan of the incoming pastor to liberalized the rules for baptizing children. The causes of dissent might vary from generation to generation, but the principle of dissent itself was well established in this family. If William (son of Governor John) had children they may have soured on the puritan church after seeing how it treated their step-mother. Without more evidence, however, this is all speculation.

The family of John Webster (d. 1783), settled originally at Boston, and eventually at Westerly, RI, at the mouth of a natural route of migration that starts at the coast and moves north through eastern Connecticut ending near Dudley. The route starts out either following a number of smaller streams to the Quinebaug, or one could travel west along the coast to New London and then stay on (or at least alongside) water all the way north to Dudley township. John Webster had sons named James, John, and Thomas, and Thomas had a son named Jonathan, but the ages and places of death for this family group do not seem to fit well for purposes of a link to the Thomas of Upton. There was a Baptist church at Richmond, where they lived for a time. In fact, the first Baptist church in Connecticut was established at Groton on the east side of the bay from New London (on the west side) about 1704, not far from Westerly, RI.

But it was the "New LIght" movement from 1740-1760 that began the rapid growth of the Baptist denomination. Most likely Thomas Webster did not adhere to the Baptist faith, if he ever did, prior to that period. It is his sons, Jonathan and Samuel, who are known to be Baptists. There is no information available about Thomas's own beliefs.

Pvt. Thomas Webster served three months and seven days, 200 miles from home at West Point, as part of a callup of troops to assist the Continental Army. Webster and others from Upton supplied their own firelocks for this service. Webster was stationed there during the infamous command of Benedict Arnold, who had planned to betray the fortifications to the British army. Arnold barely escaped capture on Sept. 26, 1780. If Arnold had succeeded, Webster and those serving with him would most likely have ended up as prisoners of war. The records do not give the soldier's age, but as his son of the same name was only 14 at this time I have assumed that the record refers to the father rather than to the son. No pension application in his name was ever filed, which would have been a lot more likely if it was the son who had served. But if this assumption is incorrect, then the son served at a very early age, much younger than most.
I have a Polly Webster who married Erastus Taylor, but she would have been born around 1810 and they lived in Trumbull County, Ohio, having removed from Massachusetts or Rhode Island. They had at least one child, Henry B. Taylor.

Erastus' father Erastus Taylor's mother was Sarah "Polly" Dewey/Dewy who was born in 1790 in Rhode Island. His father was also named Erastus Taylor and was born 1787 in Massachusetts.

I have noticed that some (but not all) of the Webster men who have had their Y DNA tested, and have published the results on the Internet, have turned out to be in haplogroup J, and more precisely, subhaplogroup J1. J1 is sometimes found in the British Isles, but it is rare. Has anyone studied the J1 results to determine when the Webster J1 might have arrived in Britain? Neolithic, Roman period, or later?

David

In fact, they have nine children in all, the first being born in 1809, so Polly could not have been born in 1810. In fact, I have her birthdate as 21 May 1790.

I'd love to share more details with you.

I do not know where their parents lived before they were adopted. I don't know if both parents died. All I know is this: My mother's name was Webster. I assume that her sister's name was also Webster. My mother's first name was Doris. I have a birth certificate for her that only gives the name Doris Webster and place of birth is Yorkville, New York. Her last name was changed to Bouton when she was adopted. Her sister was adopted by other people. She did not know she had a sister until she met her later as an adult. Apparently the sister, Elva McLean (married name)had researched and found her sister and claimed that their mother was still alive (this would have been in the 1960's I think). My mother's nephew I believe is Matthew McLean. I have contacted Matthew but he says he has no other information. (I did not feel I knew him well enough to ask him anything about his personal information.) The only information that my mother had about her parents was what her adopted mother told her. She was told that her mother died of influenza in 1918 and that her father died "in the war" (I'm not even sure which war they meant or how to search for him) My aunt Elva died suddenly so I cannot even ask her about what she knew now that my mother is dead (out of respect for my mother's wishes, I didn't contact her about the information while she was alive). I have no information about other possible family members. I feel sure there must be others out there who have the information about their birth parents. My mother was born in Yorkville, New York on April 24, 1915. Her name according to the certificate, was Doris Webster She was adopted at about the age of 3 by Isaac and Emma Bouton and she was raised in Margaretville, New York. She died in New Jersey around 1993. The sisters were about 4 years apart in age I think. I don't have any information on the sister other than what was in SSDI for what I believe to be her. I am trying to find ANY link between either sister and their birth parents. I have been working on this for at least 25 years, but have not had any luck finding out the names of the parents. I could use all the help I can get. I'm struggling with 3 adoptions in my genealogy work, so it is very frustrating. If anyone would like to help, please feel free to contact me!

Chauncy Webster family info - please add or correct to this list

I am looking for Chauncey or spelling could be Chauncy Webster parents and siblings. I am including the info I have so that either it can be used to verify or needs correcting. Any info you provide will be greatly appreciated. Maybe my info can be of use to someone else searching for the kin.

CHAUNCEY WEBSTER was born Abt. 1790 in CT, and died February 29, 1848. He married (1) MARY POLLY WILEY [born abt 1800 in CT; died abt 1842]. He married (2) CHARLOTTE HART JOHNSON [born 9-5-1805 in ASHE County North Carolina; died September 8, 1878 in Faribault Co., MN] sometime after 1842, she the daughter of JAMES HART and ELIZABETH SAILOR.

Chauncey Webster and his wife "Polly" Wiley (Wylie) were born in New York state between 1790-1800. They re-located west, settling in Iroquois Co, IL about 1830. [It is possible they may have made the westward trek with the Webster families of Chauncey Dutton Webster who settled in Michigan. Chauncey may have been a cousin, or otherwise closely related.]

Chauncey Webster purchased 40 acres in Belmont Township, Iroquois County, IL in section 32 just south of the town of Woodland, IL.

In Milford Township of Iroquois Co., IL Chauncey owned 80 acres in section 4 of the township. Sugar Creek wound its way through the property. It has been told that Chauncey owned a grist mill so this might be the land he had it on.

In section 13 of the same township he and John C Webster owned property just NE of Milford. Chauncey had 40 acres and John C had 120 acres to complete the ¼ section. This property though did not have Sugar Creek running through it as all of the other properties did.

Most, if not all of their NY-born children (Caroline, Armenia, Louisa, Orlow, possibly also Rensselaer) came with them. In all there were 15-16 children in the family later including Lovina, Hiram and Henry Clayton. His daughter Armenia married Richard Scott and Louisa married David Pierce [Pearce]

Polly died soon after the birth of Henry in 1842 and Chauncey married a widowed neighbor, Charlotte Hart Johnson, her husband John Alexander Johnson died in April of the same year. She too had children - Francis, Henry, James Ira, William K, Leanner [married Orlow WEBSTER, Chauncey's son], John Alexander Jr.

From Grundy County History 1882/William Johnson: Charlotte (HART) JOHNSON [we know that she married Chauncey WEBSTER] moved to Minnesota in 1854 with two sons and two daughters, where she died September 8, 1878. Mrs. JOHNSON's parents were formerly of England, and residents of Grundy County for over twenty years, and now living in Macon Co., Mo in 1882.

Notes for CHARLOTTE HART JOHNSON:
Alternate birth date per June Pearce: Apr. 24, 1793 Ashe County North Carolina, USA
Alternate date of death: Nov. 11, 1876 Elmore Faribault County Minnesota, USA

Children of CHAUNCEY WEBSTER and MARY WILEY are:
i.	CAROLINE2 WEBSTER, b. Abt. 1824.
ii.	ARMENIA WEBSTER, b. July 24, 1822, NY; d. January 26, 1890, Milford, Iroquois Co., Illinois.
iii.	LOUISA (LOUSEA) WEBSTER, b. Abt. March 1820, Genesee, NY; d. July 12, 1912, Watseka, Iroquois Co., IL.
iv.	ORLOW WEBSTER, b. Abt. 1827, NY; d. June 28, 1907, Wadena Co., MN. married Leanner Johnson
v.	RENSSELEAR WEBSTER, b. 1830.
Notes for RENSSELEAR WEBSTER: Chauncey’s Son Rensallaer had 40 acres of property just west of Woodland, IL. Purchase was through the Land Office; in Belmont Township, Iroquois County, IL Section 20
vi.	ALEX WEBSTER, b. 1831.
vii.	FRANCIS WEBSTER, b. 1832.
viii.	LOVINA WEBSTER, b. 1835.
ix.	HIRAM F WEBSTER, b. 1836.
Notes for HIRAM F WEBSTER:
On the 1850 census Hiram and Henry Webster were residing with their sister Armenia and Richard Scott and their daughter Marian age 2 in Iroquois Co., IL The census stated that Hiram was 12 and Henry was 9. Living with the family was Richard's brother George Scott.
x.    HENRY CLAYTON WEBSTER, b. October 29, 1841, Milford Twp, Iroquois, IL;
d. September 10, 1884, Deer Creek, Otter Tail, MN.
John H Webster and Harriet A Dewitt - what family is theirs?

There was a huge family of Websters who lived in Iroquois County, IL in the early 1830's. It is rumored that there was as many as 13 children to the family but only 10 have been actually accounted for. Now to John.
In the IL marriage listing a John H Webster married a Harriet A Dewitt in 1859. John Webster also owned land next to Chauncey Webster, head of the household of 13. Is John a son to Chauncy?
Another son of Chauncey, Henry C, also married a Dewitt, Sarah Ann, in Kankakee County IL in 1867. A John Webster ALSO married a Dewitt, Harriet A, in 1859 in Kankakee County, IL.
Was Harriet a sister to Sarah Ann?
If anyone has ANY INFO on these people, please contact me at illady45@hotmail.com.

Do you have any info on Hiram? Was he born USA?
I have a Hiram Webster born about 1838 to Chauncy and Mary [Willey] Webster. Chauncey/Chauncy died around 1842 and family got split up with Hiram and his brother Henry living with their married sister Armenia and Richard Scott in Iroquis County, IL and being shown on the 1850 census. The main Webster family moved north into MN and finally into Canada. Does any of this fit into your family?

Re: webster from Walker (Tynemouth district) Northumberland

Hi Fiona,
I've had a quick look at my family tree and I don't have a Annie Robertson Webster in the immediate family. However they all had scarily large families so it could be they've branched off a bit earlier as I haven't gone down all the lines. There is a birth of an Ann Robertson Webster registered in Tynemouth district (which includes Walker) June 1883 vol 10b p161 (you can verify this on Freebmd or their records here on ancestry). Your next step is probably to order her birth certificate which will give you parents, adddress etc or to try and find her on the 1891 or 1901 census. (I would have a look at census for you but I've let my membership lapse). When you've got back a bit further let me know and perhaps there will be a connection. Anyway good luck and hope to hear more. Linda

Hi Linda
i am looking for the family of Annie Robertson Webster. She would have been born in the late 1870's early 1880's. I don't know anything about her siblings or parents. She married Harry Augustus Lawes and four children -they lived in Wallsend around 1907.
I would be grateful for any information if it has relevance to your family.
Fiona
