Eileen,

You may want to contact the New Canaan (CT) Historical Society. I do not have the address/phone number with me at the moment, but they have a wealth of research on the "Weed" line descending from Jonas and may be able to tie you in....

Good luck, and let me know if you cannot get through to them,

--Rob

Mr. Weed,

I noticed the e-mail to Mrs. Satterthaite and of which I too got a copy. Like I told her that was powerful testimony she gave about the Weed Family and the struggles they had with alchoholism. It took alot of courage to talk about it.

I noticed she mentioned in her e-mail about Emily Barden Garrett. By chance did you know her? Paul Garrett was her father. My sister and I have been doing research on the Garrett Family for more than 40 years. As you probably know he was probably the best know wine maker in the nation for many years and before he died in 1940. Any information you have on the Garrett Family you wish to share would be greatly appreciated.
My name is William J. Hines and I live in Virginia

You Have A Blessed Day

William J. Hines

Mrs. Satterthaite,
I received your e-mail, powerful testimony on the Weed Family. I have seen no finer memories of a family than you have. It's just wonderful to share the memories. It really gives some insight tothis family and their struggles. Again thank you so much for this.

I was very interested in the fact that you knew Emily Garrett Barden and even had visited in Guasti, California. Paul Garrett her dad is related to me and my sister. We have extensive information on this side of the family. Another very powerful and at that a very rich family. My sister and I have been doing research on The Garrett Family for more than 40 years. Such a wonderful family.

By chance you wouldn't happen to have any pictures of Emily Garret Barden, her husband and children. If there's any pictures on the Garrett and Barden families you would care to share it would appreciated. I'd be more than will to pay you for any expenses it would cost you to get them to me. It would reallly be appreciated. It would be of such delight if you just happen to have some memories Emily Garrett Barden when you visited them and would care to share them. It would mean alot to our research on this family.

My name is my home address if you decide to send us any information.

William J. I do from time to time think how different all that could have been.
Anyway, I am now glad I did send that.....
Happy end of summer...
Anne
Hi, Thank you for the insight on the family. I have in been in contact with some of the family and have heard the same news about that part of the Weed family. It is sad what alcoholism can do for a family. It must have been pretty hard for you to write that message. It is pretty obvious that you thought very much of J Spencer Weed. Take care, Jack Weed

I have come across a correspondance asking about members of the Weed family. I was engaged to J Spencer Weed in 1962, and knew Dorothy and Douglas, J's parents, who lived at the time at One East End Avenue in NYC, very well. I also knew Emily Garrett Barden and visited her family in Guasti California, the somewhat feudal town and vinyards that they owned there and which I believe finally went bankrupt. I broke off the engagement due, unfortunately to rampant alcholism in the family. They were all attractive and intelligent people, and sadly self destructive. Not the Barden family, they seemed much better atuned to life. J went to Australia, married and divorced, a surgeon's daughter from Sydney then went to Montana or Oregon as he had always wanted to be a rancher. I believe he married the same woman twice, but his long battle with alcholism finally did him in. J died in 2000. He had graduated from The Hill School, attended Middlebury College and graduated from Clarement Mens College in 1962. He was divinely handsome at that time and quite brilliant, but also a serious drinker, as were his parents, I do not mean social drinking at all...binges and rather terrifying, at least to me, behavour. I also knew the venerable Spencer Weed, J's grandfather and one of the founders of the Madison Square Garden Horse Show, which I attended with them all several times. I do not put a period after "J" because he did not as it did not stand for anything, he had been named for his grandfather....and used to tell me we would have to have a J Spencer Weed the 1V...a rather daunting handle for any child. Anyway I saw in his Hill School obituary (inadvertantly) that he did have a son, but named Douglas, and a daughter named Barbara. I saw J last in 1977 in NYC and he had had Barbara but not Douglas yet....he told me he was giving up alchohol, had learned his lesson and was turning over a new leaf. Before we had left for dinner he consumed four martinies, and then two bottles of wine and several brandies. I read that J died of alchoholism, I hope his children have happier lives.
I hope some of this is of some interest to you....it is the first time I have ever done anything like this but seeing your requests brought back part of my life of over 45 years ago.
Anne Stambaugh Satterthaite

Great. Let me fill you in - I found this information for both of them in online newspapers.
Douglas Weed married Dorothy Virgina Garrett on Jan.9, 1938 in Bluff Point, Westchester, New York. They were married in the Garrett family memorial chapel. The chapel was built in memory of a brother of Dorothy's who died in 1929 of TB.
I was never able to find a death date for Dorothy were you?

Janet was married on Nov. 25, 1938 in Short Hills, Essex, New Jersey at the Christ Protestant Episcopal Church.
I have her date of death as Aug. 16, 1975 in Maryland from a death notice in the New York Times.
I hope this helps with your family tree.
I didn't have the information about the first wife of J. Spencer Weed Jr. so that was of great help to me.

Jean

Thank you! Would you see please if there is any info for a James Weed born in the late 1700s, maybe born in Walton, Delware Co, NY but possibly in CT? He married Docy Hoyt, possibly could be Theodocia Hoyt. I don't know if the generations go that far. I remember awhile back someone asked for a William Weed lookup and there were no William Weeds in the book. All my grandfathers were named William from the time of James son (1803 to present). Thanks!

I have a James Weed, born in Walton, NY in 1777 and died in Plattsburgh, NY in 1819. He married Docy Hoyt, born in 1781 and died in 1813, both in Hudson, NY. They had a son William B Weed born in 1803 in Walton who later immigrated to Greene, PA and appears in the book Erie County Pennsylvania Biographies 1884 (http://pa-files.biofiles.us/Erie1884.Greene.htm), mentioning his parents and even that the father of James Weed was a Colonel of a Connecticut regiment in the Revolutionary war.

Do you think your John Hoyt who died in Walton, could be the father of Docy Hoyt? The timing seems right. What sources do you have about the migration of John Hoyt to Walton? Do you have any info about his children?

I also can't get anything about James Weed. I don't know if he is the son of the Lieut. James Weed ("When the War of the Revolution broke out he enlisted in Capt. Hoyt's Company ... rising to the rank of Lieutenant" http://www.archive.org/details/ogdenfamilyiname00whee “The Ogden family in America”) who brought his family from New Canaan, CT, to Walton in about 1788.

Thank you for the lookup. So no Walton, NY Weeds there, oh well!

Yes I already searched every nook and corner of the usgenweb for the last few months. I had found both the cemetery records and the transcribed will on there too. I have sent a request to the Erie Co probate court (with SASE) about 10 days ago and am waiting for an answer. Concurrently I'm also gathering documents as requested by the Mayflower Society for another line (William B Weed's daughter in law's line, Doane) so I've been trying to get info in whichever place I can!

Re: Jonas Weed Book Lookups?

Thank you! I came across a mention of your book online.

As I wrote before, I have traced our line back to James Weed and Docy Hoyt, but I can't find them anywhere in historical documents! I was wondering if your book mentions anything about them, or traces any Weeds settling in Walton, NY.

James Weed and Docy Hoyt were mentioned in the book “Nelson's Biographical Dictionary and Historical Reference Book of Erie County” as parents of William B Weed. Various family trees show James Weed born in Walton, NY in 1777, dying in Plattsburgh, NY in 1819; marrying Docy Hoyt around 1802 then having my GGG Grandad William B Weed in 1803. They have Docy Hoyt as born in 1781 and dying in 1813, both in Hudson, NY. But I have no proof of any of those facts (except in the above mentioned book, it confirms the death year and place of both James Weed and Docy Hoyt.)

I have found one James Weed who came from CT to Walton, NY and was one of the first settlers there, but can't connect him to my James Weed. Some family trees mention a son James to the James Weed who came from CT, but married to someone else, not Docy Hoyt; and being born 10 years before my James Weed was said to be born. In addition, I ordered the CT James Weed Will from the Probate court and it has no mention whatsoever of a son James. Instead, it leaves all his property to a grandson named “James the third”, who would be way too young to be my James Weed.

Could you also give me ideas about where to look up info about relatives living so long ago? I sent away for records of Weeds buried in Plattsburgh cemeteries but they came back with no James Weed. And the only Weed Will on file at the Walton probate court was for the CT James Weed. Naturally I have combed census records from the time, etc. In the Nelson's book it mentioned my James Weed as serving in the war of 1812 under his father, who was a captain in the revolutionary war (the CT James Weed was also mentioned in other books as a caption in the revolutionary war); when I searched for records, it does bring up a James Weed born in 1777 enlisting in the war, but born in CT. Of course the online family tree could be wrong and instead of Walton, he could have been born in CT. Maybe he is the son of the CT James Weed who settled in Walton but they had a “family fallout” and thus he wasn't in the will?

Anyway, if you would please look up any reference you have to James Weed, Docy Hoyt or my confirmed William B Weed (born in Walton, NY in 1803 then went over to Greene, Erie Co PA, married to Nellie Yaple). Also any Weeds that migrated from CT (where Jonas Weed, my DNA ancestor, settled) to Walton, NY or nearby. Maybe my James Weed came from other families who lived in the area.

Thanks again!! :-)

Jonas Weed Book Lookups?

Is there anyone out there who has one or both of the following books who could do lookups?

1. From Northamptonshire to Walker Valley: A History and Genealogy of the Weed Family
Authors James H Wiseman, John L. "Jack" Weed

2."History of the Weed and Allied Families," by Charles Allison Weed

Our DNA recently came back to show we are descendants of Jonas Weed. I'm trying to tie that line in with my last known ancestors, James Weed and Docy Hoyt. Their son William B Weed was definitely born in Walton, NY in 1803 before moving to Greene, PA and settling.

Sorry, I later found out that I had the wrong family line. I'm not related to Sargent Weed/Sargeant Weed after all. I left off the research before I found the maiden name of Adaline/Adaliza).

Do you have the History of Weed book? My current last in the line so far is James Weed, birth date and place unknown (maybe Walton, NY in 1777), married to Docy Hoyt. Definitely I know their son was William B Weed, born in Walton, NY in 1803 and moved to Greene, PA where he founded Weeds Corners there.

My brother took a DNA test which shows we are descended from Jonas Weed. I'm now trying to link up Jonas Weed family line to my James Weed.

Hi Ruth, First off I stand corrected. In your post you said Clara was taken by lewis & NellieHamerly, I took this to mean adopted. Anything you have on Lewis/Nellie or Clara Hammerly/Hamerly would be appreciated. Both spellings of the name seemed acceptable back in those days. I have been able to find nothing on Lewis after the 1860 census outside of a will he filed in the 1890s in Jamestown. I ordered a copy of this will from Sampubco and am still waiting. Iam just north of Pittsburgh, Pa so Mayville, NY ( county seat of Chautaqua County) is only about a 3 hr drive. If i thought I could getany other records on Lewis that would do me any good ....I would take a day and drive.up there. Do you have any advice for me on tracking land records in Warren County PaNothing seems to be on line. Once I receive the copy of Lewis' will I will forward a copy as I am sure Clara will be mentioned.
The birth date I have for Hannah is Oct. 16, 1883. I believe she was born on Staten Island since this is where her family was living. I got the date from the widow's pension application that her mother, Emma Weyant Bowman, filed.

I do not have the book. The only Weed descendants I have are: William Weed 1796 NY; he was known as Billy Weed and ended up in Wellsville, Allegany, NY where he died in 1874. There is a story about him reburying relatives who were from Columbia County, NY on his land where a road was going to be built. Billy or William possibly had a brothers named James and Thomas.
William Weed and his wife Susan Foster had Laura Weed 1821, Charles Weed 1824, Phineas Weed between 1825 & 1830, Lorinda Weed 1828 and Betsey Weed 1838

Hi,

My book mentions none of the Weeds from Walton, NY. My Weeds came from Stamford>Derby>Hartford, CT>Newburgh, NY>Walker Valley, NY. I did find alot of info on www.usgenweb.org. That is a genealogy website where all the info is free and done by volunteers. I read James Weed's will on that website and it mentions his wife's name as Sabra. I later found out that it is Sarah according the cemetery records that I also read on that site. To be really sure of the parentage of William B. Weed, I would get a death certificate. In the state of Pennsylvania, any death prior to 1906, the record must be requested thru the probate court in the county where the person died. In your case, it would be Erie county. They have a website and you can get the info off it there. I wish I could be of more help. I hope that this helps. Good Luck, Jack
