Weis in Niederbronn, Alsace, France
Recently a major break in my Weis research has identified my 2nd great grandfather's family. Charles Weis, born in Niederbronn, was named in his brother's obituary. His brother, Joseph Weis, born in Niederbronn in 1829 to Jean Philippe Weis and Mary Ann Weber, had a detailed obituary which named his brothers and himself as follows:
IGNACE (Ignatz) the oldest who served as mayor of Niederbronn until he refused to sign documents in German rather than French after the Germans took over the province in 1870.
FRANK Weis, who died in New York city.
CHARLES Weis, my 2nd great grandfather, who died in Waterbury, CT in 1873
LOUIS Weis, who went west and disappeared forever.
JOSEPH Weis, the youngest who emigrated from France to New York city in 1845. He married Sophie Leroy, daughter of Dr. Louis Leroy and Sophia Willwood, in 1855 in New York City. He died in Waterbury, CT in 1910. At the time he had four surving children: Mrs. Adeline C. Heick, Jamaica, Long Island, Frank, Richard, and Mary of Waterbury, CT
Niederbronn Records show that there were other children, daughters and sons, and I am wondering if anyone out there might tie into this family.
