About me and my WEISS connection: My last WEISS ancestor is difficult to identify. I say that because both my great-grandfather, Francis Shelly WEISS and his father, Henry Latchar WEISS, no longer used that spelling when they died. Henry and Frank were spelling their last name as WISE by then. So, IÂ’ll give you my brickwall ancestor instead. HeÂ’s Killian WEISS. He was born 15 Dec 1751, probably in southeastern Pennsylvania. He married Catherine Ziegler LANDIS circa 1785. They were the parents of at least nine children: Anna, Killian, John, Jacob, George, Samuel, Katherine, Henry, and Hannah. Killian died 16 Feb 1840 at Hereford township, Peensylvania. Catherine died 21 Mar 1876. Samuel LANDIS WEISS was the father of Henry Latchar WEISS..

My genealogical studies began officially in late January 1976 and much of the time since then has been in used pursuing my southern U.S. lines. I did pursue my WEISS-WISE from time to time over the years, but it wasn’t until early 1997 that I decided to pursue the interconnecting families and first attempted to retrace the steps of another cousin’s pursuit of our WEISS immigrant. That cousin, Walter “Bud” WISE as of 1980 had identified Killian’s father as George WEISS and linked him back to a man who supposedly had no children who survived to adulthood. I have yet to contact Bud’s wife and children to take a look at his later notes. I’ve been so distracted by the findings of the interconnected families that I haven’t had time.

I hope to share my WEISS research using both GenConnect and my own Web site - http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/karon_bosze (stop by and take a peek!). And I hope that you will share your research efforts as well!

If you have any questions or comments, donÂ’t hesitate to contact me: boszek@doubled.com

Look forward to hearing from yÂ’all and I wish each of you tremendous luck in all your genealogical searches!

Our surname was Weiss and changed to Wise. Probably a common occurance. I am trying to get a line on my ggranddad Joseph Wise who I believe died near Shelbyville Ill about 1897. His wife was Anna Merriss. Just taking a chance, but in your research, have you run across this name??
Please advise only if you have some thing. Many thanks. Del Wise

My GGF in Charles Herman WEISS, from GREITZ or SAXONY, 1860- 1924, aka Karl Hermann WEISS. The family here in Virginia pronounces our name "Wise". I have been told that my GGM Leonora C. Ferebee of Norfolk County Virginia, would not agree to be known as Mrs. "Vice", and it was then pronounced "Wise" ( as in wise owl). Rather than change the spelling, my children and I pronounce our name as Vice with a W (WISS with a long I) I find it interesting that the spelling is sometimes shown as WEISZ, or that it was changed to Wise. Perhaps the name was pronounced Wise all along.
Charles H. Weiss, came to America alone in 1874 suposedly to attend school in Baltimore; his father is said to be Eric Christian WEISS ( did not come to America); also, it is said that Charles had was correspondence with German speaking female cousins in NYC. We know none of the connections to our larger German family, but would hope to find the others in Germany and America, and the family history in Germany.

I am researching my g-g-grandfather David WEISS (b. abt 1792, in West Prussia, near Danzig--d. after 1853); m. Johanna von WEDELSTAEDT (b. 2 Jan 1788, in Berent, West Prussia--d. Feb 1849, Berent, West Prussia); children: Wilhelm (b. 18 Nov 1826, Berent, West Prussia--d. 11 July 1898, Osyka, Pike Co., Mississippi), and two other children (no names for these two). My last concrete reference to David WEISS is in the marriage record for Wilhelm (25 Sep 1853, Stralsund, Pommern, Preussen) where David is identified as father of the groom and where the mother, Johanna, is identified as deceased. Any help with suggestions for research directions would be appreciated. (I have read the microfilm records filmed by the LDS for Berent [known today as Koscierznya, Poland].)
