Walter C. Welch/Joseph Powell Welch--Texas

I am researching the history of Newport, TX, located along the Jack and Clay county lines. I believe that Joseph Powell Welch and Walter C. Welch were among the first, if not the first doctors, in Newport. Newport was founded about 1878, and newspaper records from the early 1880s mention J.P. Welch and W.C. Welch as doctors; they also are in the 1880 census for Newport, as well as in land and tax records; I believe a nephew of J. P. Welch lived in Newport and is buried in its cemetery. I also think they left there sometime during the 1880s, but I am interested in what happened to them after their time in Newport. So, I am hoping that someone can tell me more about them or put me in touch with their relatives.

I appreciate any help you can give me. My interest in Newport stems from my dad having been born and raised there (and now buried there), as well as my grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins having lived there. Now, I’m trying to reconstruct the community’s history.

Many thanks,
Scott Langston
Weatherford, TX
sclangston@charter.net
I'm looking for information regarding James Welch, who was born in 1814 in New York, and died in 1898 in Grass Lake, Michigan. He was married to Susan Taylor (marriage date and location not known), and had three children that I know of: Alpheus A, John C, and Mary. I'm at a standstill, and can't find a single thing on any his parents or any siblings he may have had. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Does anyone have a copy of this publication, or know where I might be able to purchase a copy? Based on the "snippets" is saw doing a Google book search, I'm fairly certain this publication will yield many answers for me in my Welch research. I'm currently "stuck" on James Welch, b: about 1772 in New York, who married Keziah Barrettt, b: 1776 in Connecticut. I can't find anything on James' parents, and only know of one child they had (James Welch Jr). Any help in locating this publication would be greatly appreciated!

John Welch & Susannah Brooks

Hi,

I Have a John Welch born VA between 1814 and
1818 married to Susannah Brooks, she was born 1823 NC or TN. He was in Claiborne by 1840 cause that is where he
married Susannah. The problem being there was another John
Welch married to a Susan Welch at the same time! John is
my ggg grandfather his son William born between 1839 and 1843? married Mary Elizabeth Brooks and had my g grandmother Nancy Welch who married Lewis A. Thompson,
I do know for a fact that Nancy is my g grandmother, past her
I can't be sure other than her Welch family at one time came
to be in VA before TN and that they look to be of mixed ancesty,
All my Welch family look Indian! Some of us Welch researchers
were sent files that took the line back to Joseph Welch of VA
but there is another line of Welch researchers who say that
their John Welch is his son and why I now have to start over
doing my Welch line. My grandfather is the one in the hat! This
is an old picture!

Evie

Welch's of Dorset, VT - mid 1800's

I am seeking information on a large family of Welch's (now descendants are named Walsh) that were from Dorset, Vermont.

John Welch (Walsh) was born about 1823 and immigrated to the USA from Ireland. He was married to a Hannah Daley. John worked in a quarry. They had 7 children, all were born in the Dorset, VT area:
>Michael - 1857.
>Mary - 1858.
>Catherine - 1860.
>Bridget - 1863.
>Patrick - November 1866 (born in East Dorset, VT).
>Hannah - 1868.
>Ellen - 1871.

According to family history, the name Walsh was changed to Welch when John immigrated to the USA. Something to do with the Gaelic and the fact that census takers couldn't clearly understand the name.

Not exactly sure when or where John died, but Hannah died November 14, 1900 in North Adams, MA.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Chris

I am working on my husband's family. I have Frank Welch, born Dec. 5, 1872 in Pella, Marion Co, IA. His death certificate says his father's name was Thomas. According to the death certificate, Thomas married a Martha unknown. Frank married Eula Burris. I have Frank and Eula in 1900 in Webster Co, MO, 1910 in Parsons, KS, 1920 in Commerce City, OK and 1930 Terre Haute, IN. Although I have found several possible Thomas Welch candidates in Pella, I can't find Thomas, his wife and his kids. There was supposed to be a brother to Frank names Edwin. Any suggestions?

As a hobby, I rescue old photos that have identification on them. I picked up one of an old man, identified as Sylvester WELCH. It was taken in Buffalo, NY. On the back under his name, is written, "My mother's uncle".

I'd guess this to be late 1800s.

I'd like to locate family to connect him to.
Welch family in Matoon Illinois, mid 1800s

Patrick Welch, b 1861 in Matoon Ill. Parents were Peter Welch & Catherine McElroy who were both born in Ireland (not sure where). Peter and Catherine had other children Peter, Mary,John and James as listed on 1860 Ill census.

In the same town are an older Patrick Welch with wife Lissie, children: Peter, John, Nicholas, Frank and Bernard listed in 1860 census also. and also on the census is John McElroy, Bridget McElroy in a household, which I think are my patrick's (born 1861 up above) aunt and uncle.

in 1870 census, Patrick's parents are gone along with his siblings Peter, John. Patrick is living with the aunt and uncle John McElroy and Bridget McElroy. The older Patrick Welch family is still there. Don't know what happened to my Patrick's parents and sibs, perhaps died???

in 1880, Patrick is still with his uncle John McElroy and 2 siblings in a household. by 1900 Patrick has moved to Kansas City MO and married Alice Brady from Hannibal MO.

I am searching for anyone who might be descended from any of Patrick's siblings, or from the older Patrick's line and his children. It is confusing with the names the same!!

will share any information I have on this family.

Welch - Elley connection in KY

I saw an earlier post here about a Rick Johnston who had 5th great-grandparents of Benjamin Welch/Elzb Elley and James Welch/Nancy Elley. I believe these are also my 5th g-grandparents, but am having trouble making the connection. One of my known ancestors, Henry Abner Welch is said to be the son of Henry Elley Welch in the "Scott County, Ky" book. Henry Elley Welch is further said to be the grandson of Henry Elley who came to KY from VA with Lewis Craig and the Upper Spotsylvania Baptist Church.
I know that Henry Abner Welch's parents James Welch and Susan Ann Schooler [per Watson's "up the schooler tree"] and that James Welch's father is Henry Elley (clay?) Welch. Henry Elley Welch is listed in the 1850 and 1860 census with a wife named Cynthia who is too young to be the same wife he has in the 1830 census in Owen County..... since it has been stated that Henry Elley Welch had 3 wives, I'm guessing that this earlier wife would be the mother of at least my James, Leouisa and Betsy.... anyone know the name of this wife? It has to be the Elley connection......

JOHN WELCH

John first shows up in Delaware Co. IA about 1855. He is married to Bridget (Hennessey, but could be Burke).
No marriage record for them has ever been found.
Their children are:
Edward (listed as Ebby on census)
Mary
Margaret
John
William
Ellen
All were born in IA.
We don't know where John and Bridget came from before they settled in IA. Census has their birthplace as Ireland.
No death record for John, but he did sign his Will with an "X".
We think John and Briget may have been married in ILL.
Also, there is a Michael Welch living in Delaware Co. IA at the same time as John. Could be his brother?
Would like to find Johns birthplace in Ireland. But I don't think that will ever happen as we can't trace him before his arrival in Iowa. So many John Welch's. How do we know when we have the right one!?

I'm trying to trace back my great-grandfather William H. Welch's family who were from somewhere in Canada and evidently immigrated down to Michigan where my great-grandfather was born in 1868 and later married Elleda Millar, whose father's name was Gordon D. Millar (or Miller) from Canada.

Brothers, Ted & Herbert Welch - Cousins of Anna "Lillian" Elizabeth Martorana (NEE: Wilson)?

I'm looking for information on the family of Anna "Lillian" Elizabeth Wilson (born in Ireland), and according to my grandmother, a newspaper clipping of Anna Elizabeth's wedding to Salvadore Martorana (in the United States, presumably San Francisco, CA) lists Ted Welch as a "cousin of the bride," who may also have a brother named Herbert. I'd like to find out if these are legitimate cousins and if they are, if they have anymore information on the family tree.

Thank you in advance for any information!

~Camille May~

Charles H Welch born Jul 1870

I have found much about a Charles H. Welch married to Alice R. Sewell in the 1900, 1910, 1920 census records of Columbus, Chenango co., NY. They are buried in the Lambs Corners cemetery in town of Columbus, Chenango co., NY.
My problem is that I cannot find who the parents of Charles H. Welch were, or where he was born or any siblings etc.
If anyone can help with this one it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Winnie
