since it was too early for mandated records, try the archives for the county and the state to see if they have any records. Also, check local records for church records. Also, the funeral homes (they are usually passed down for defunct businesses) to see if they have any record for the death ... and of course, the clerk may have records for the actual cemetery.
Also, check for the "History of ..." books to see if they have them listed.
