Lewis Wells, 1821 in New York - ? ; 1830's in Medina County; later in Indianola, Warren County, Iowa

I'm a WELLS researcher and found this Biography that, for, now, does not fit our line. I did find a 2001 inquiry about Lewis Wells but it was dated 2001 and cannot find a current email for the researcher. She was posting with Orin Wells responding with census information. The biography was not listed.

Most likely Lewis' birth place was in the Cortland County area of New York as many WELLSes moved to Wayne and Medina Counties of Ohio in the late 1830's from that area of New York.

Based on the Biography:

1850 Census of Litchfield, Medina County, I find a Lewis Wells and his wife Sarah and 4 children. Lucius and Lewis and most likely Willoby and Whitney who later died. Lewis' daughter, Electa, is found in another household, age 6, born 1844, in Gad and Joanna Pomeroy's HH or living with Belorus and Charity Wheeler (all in same HH)

In the 1860 Census of Indianola, Warren County, Iowa, Lewis is living with Sarah and Electa and the two boys, each only as L. W. Wells. Also in the Household is an Elsy I Wells, age 76.

Going back to 1850 Census of Litchfield, Medina County, I find an Elide Wells living with a Nathan Wells, both of Connecticut.

In 1840 Census of Litchfield, Medina County, we find Nathan Wells living with: 2 males: 15-20, 1 20-30, and 1 60-70 and females 1 15-20 and 1 60-70.

Hope this information is helpful to another Wells researcher.

Des Moines Biographies

WELLS, L.-Druggist. Was born in New York March 28, 1821, and at the age of thirteen years removed, with his parents, to Medina county, Ohio, were he was raised. At the age of nineteen years he engaged in the potash and pearl business in Litchfield, and a short time after opened a dry goods store which he continued until 1853. He then came to this State, locating in Warren county, and invested his means in land and also town lots in Indianola. In the fall of 1854 he went out to Omaha, Nebraska, built the first hotel at that place which he called the Douglas House, and boarded the first legislative body of the State. At. the end of one year he returned to Indianola and bought the Hackett Mill, which he ran for about two years and was also engaged in the dry goods business. He owned a livery and sale stable in Holly Springs, Mississippi, and shipped horses and mules to that place, and at the same time ran five mail routes for the government. In 1863 he went to St. Louis, engaging in the commission business, but soon sold out and came to Des Moines, where he bought stock. For a short time he was engaged in the livery business at Clinton, Iowa, and then moved to Peoria, Illinois, where he followed his business nearly three years. In 1868 he was burned out, sustaining quite a loss, and returned to this city, where he again engaged in the livery business. He remained here nearly three years, sold part of his stock and took a trip through the northwest, remaining about ten months. In 1871 he resumed his principal occupation, and continued therein until August, 1877, when he traded his stock for lands in Nebraska. He moved to Beatrice, that State, remained about three months, and then returned here, where he bought his old stable and also a drug stock. The next year he traded the same for property on the East Side, and in December, 1877, bought his present drug store. In January, 7 1869, he met with a severe accident, falling upon a defective sidewalk and breaking his hip. This made him a cripple for life. Mr. Wells has been thrice married, first, July 14, 1842, to Miss Elesta L. Phinney, a native of Ohio. She died November 1, 1843, leaving one child, Electa (now Mrs. D. W. Wells, of Kearney Junction, Nebraska). He was married again January 1, 1846, to Miss Sarah Jenkins, a native of Ohio. They had four children: Lucius W. and Leander W. living, and two deceased. The third time, October 9, 1866, he married Miss Abbie J. Paris, a native of Ohio. They have no children.

My husband is the grandson of Philip Wells. Philip was a son of Samuel Duncan Wells and Matilda Brunk Wells. Philip married Margaret (Maggie)Melissa Clark. I have much info on Philip, but no picture of he or his wife Margaret. I may have one, but no dates on the back of those cabinet cards. Some of these pics are taken in Iowa and some in Santa Rosa,CA.
I am hoping somebody out there has a picture of Philip and his wife Margaret and a picture of Clark(Clark)Wells and his wife Catherine Finke Wells. I have pictures of some of the other children of Samuel and Matilda(thanks to the generosity of many distant relatives), but need to narrow down Clark and Philip.

Hoping to hear from somebody.

Thank you.

Jennifer Holte kerr
Jeneker@yahoo.com

In 1870, they had moved to Perry, Shiawassee County, Michigan, where Sally died 5 Mar 1874(source: death record http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#...). After her death, Alexander moved to Barry County, where he lived until his death in 1882. Alexander is buried in Banfield Cemetary, but I have been unable to locate Sally's grave. (there is a Sally Dunn buried there, but is a different sally)

They had four children:
1. Iantha, b. May 1862 d. 1936, md. Jesse Risbridger, and had two sons: Glen & Sherman.
2.Albert b. Mar 10 1866 d. July 5 1876
3.Fannie Maria, b. 1868 d. Feb 20 1917, md. Ernest Crandall
4.Emma A, b. Sep 30 1872 in Perry, Shiawassee County, Michigan, d. 1934 in Barry County, Michigan. She married Hamilton Orlando Armour Jan 21 1890 in Barry Twp, Barry County, Michigan. They had at least four children: Vesta, Floyd, Velma and Mable.

I am a descendant through Emma's son, Floyd. So far, I've found one possible census record in Calhoun County in 1850 listing a Sally Wells at the appropriate age, but have not been able to confirm.

Wells of SC and KY

I am researching my husband's ancestor Phillip Wells of SC whose son Samuel D. Wells was the father of Phillip Wells, md. Mary Butler and lived in Hart Co., KY. This research also involves the family of David Hamilton of SC, whose two daughters, Anna and Margaret married into the Wells family.

Does anybody know more about David Hamilton and have the name of his wife? Did he die in South Carolina?

William Wells, father of immigrant John Wells ~1600

Does anyone have a clear lineage or even location for William Wells, the father of John Wells (who married Elizabeth Myntern) of Somerset, Gloucester, England, who immigrated to Virginia in the early 17th century?

Some genealogies refer to William Wells as a Reverend or to his wife being named Elizabeth. But they widely disagree as to his location in England and the identity of his parents.

Also, did William Wells have two sons, John and James? Or was his one son named "John James Wells"?

Proven Children of James Wells/Hannah Loomis of CT/PA?

I'm actually researching my Ross and Taylor families (Bradford Co., PA) but have ties to the Wells family that I'm chasing.

Elizabeth Ross (1770-1856), daughter of Lt. Perrin Ross and Mercy Otis, married Guy Wells (1766-1828), son of Lt. James Wells and Hannah Loomis. Both fathers (James Wells and Perrin Ross) were killed in the Wyoming Valley (PA) Battle/Massacre.

Daniel Taylor (1788-1865), son of Abraham Taylor and Mary Stone, married Olive Wells. I have no dates on her yet, and she is reportedly the daughter of Reuben Wells and Abigail Turrell (per Heverly's History of Bradford Co., PA). Reportedly, Reuben is a son of Lt. James Wells and Hannah Loomis, making him brother to Guy Wells.

I try to prove everything possible because there is so much mis-information and incorrect information floating around the Internet, so I started researching the children of James Wells and Hannah Loomis to link Guy and Reuben in my database. Heverly's History of Bradford Co., PA lists the following children for James and Hannah:
James, b. 1755
Hannah, b. 1757
Betsey, b. 1760
Olive, b. 1762
Amasa, b. 1765
Guy, b. 1766
Reuben, b. 1768
Cyrus, b. 1770
Theodosia, b. 1772
Alice, b. 1774
Mary, b. 1776

Because most the kids were born in Colchester, CT, I went to the Barbour Collection to look for birth records, and I found the following (Colchester section, pages 230-235; the family record is in Colchester Town Records, Vol. 1, Page 32):

James Wells m. Hannah Loomis, 28 Mar 1754
Olive Wells, d. James and Hannah, b. [___], 1755, d. 15 May 1758
Hannah Wells, d. James and Hannah, b. 13 May 1756, d. 21 May 1758
Betsey Wells ("Bettey"), d. James and Hannah, b. 15 Apr 1757
Olive Wells 2nd, d. James and Hannah, b. 18 Sep 1758
Amasa Wells, s. James and Hannah, b. 29 May 1765
Guy Wells, s. James and Hannah, b. 22 Aug 1766
Cyrus Wells, s. James and Hannah, b. 23 May 1768
Theodosia Wells, d. James and Hannah, b. 3 Oct 1770
Alice Wells, d. James and Hannah, b. 29 Nov 1772
Molly Wells, d. James and Hannah, b. 2 Jul 1776

Neither Reuben nor James, reportedly the oldest son, are included; I have not located them on the Ricker CD (includes all of the Barbour records). I do have a family where a child was missed in the family record, so I know this has happened. There is a family tree showing a birth date for Reuben of 8 Apr 1764, which would fit in the gap between Olive 2nd and Amasa. It is also possible that James Jr. and the first Olive were both born in 1755 (say, James born Jan or Feb and Olive born 10 months later tops). It's odd that two children would be missed when the family was recorded, but perhaps this happened on occasion.

In looking at the various histories of Bradford Co., PA, I have found enough evidence of Reuben being a son of James Wells and Hannah Loomis that I believe he is a son of James/Hannah. I'm not finding anything for James, however, other than mention of his being the oldest son and living in Honeoye Falls, NY.

Has anyone seen documented evidence for the children of Lt. James Wells and Hannah Loomis? I'm especially interested in proof for Reuben since I need to tie him to my Taylor family.

Thanks!
Leander C. Wells...Civil War deserter (1833 - 1901)

I'm looking for information on the parents of Leander C. Wells, born 5 May 1833 in New York and died 26 January 1901. In 1850, he was living with his two brothers and a sister in Lisbon, Saint Lawrence, New York and by 1857 had married and moved to Nininger, Dakota, Minnesota. He married Mary E. ? probably in New York before moving. Sometime between deserting the military while fighting the Civil War in 1863 and 1870, he moved to Iowa and remained there the rest of his life. His wife Mary E. ? died in 1883 and before the 1885 census he was remarried to someone named Susan. He is buried in E. Linwood Cemetery along with his first wife Mary E. in Boone county, Iowa. If anyone has this person in their tree and can give me some more information on him, please send me an email. I'm also interested in Mary E. his first wife. It's possible her maiden name was Sheldon and I would like to confirm that. Thanks.

It appears that Charles Wells born 1729 in Baltimore, Md., and Sarah Dorsey born 1730/31 in Baltimore would be our ancestors.
They apparently had eight sons, one of whom should be the father of Lakin Dorsey Wells, our gggrandfather. These sons are: Edward b. abt 1752; Alexander b. abt 1754; Richard b. abt 1756; Charles D. b. 1758; Joseph b. abt 1760; George b. abt 1762; Robert b. abt 1764; and Thomas b. abt. 1766. These dates are all estimates.
These sons might have been born in Maryland or could have been born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, as most of them appear in the PA 1790 federal census, Washington County. Some of them moved later to the Coshocton area of Ohio. Thanks for any info anyone can give me regarding these sons of Charles and Sarah.
Mary

Lakin WELLS

I think I'm a descendant of Lakin WELLS and Cynthia MAFFIT who were married in Ohio in 1813. If the information I've come up with is correct, Lakin and Cynthia had a son, William, who married Hily Ann (Hilah) KINNER in Ohio. One of their sons, Harvey, born Mar 18, 1846, married Agnes BROWN. My grandfather, Archibald, was born to Harvey and Agnes January 8, 1890 in Overton, Nebraska. He had siblings Roy, William R., James, Mary, Roscoe, and Idella that I know of. Archie married Elsie HOLMES on January 31, 1911 in Kearney, Nebraska. Any information on these people would be very much appreciated. Thanks. Mary ( Wells) Ritchey .

Benjamin Wells B. Abt. 1824 in NY

I am trying to find out who the parents were of Benjamin Wells who was born abut 1824 in NY. He shows up in the 1850 Williamsburg, Kings Co., NY Census with wife "Elizabeth" & children. In 1860 he is in Brooklyn and in 1870 he is in New York City. In 1880 he is remarried to "Hannah" and still in NYC. He has had 4 sons that I know of.

I found an obituary in Navesink, NJ that states a Benjamin Wells was 71 years old in 1895 when he died and who had 4 sons which would make him the right age. He was buried there in the Methodist Church cemetery in Navesink, NJ.

I found Benjamin's boys in the 1900 census in Winfield, NJ as Tradesmen.

Does anyone know of this family?

Thank you.

Carolyn

Henry Wells, m. Nelly Van Vliet, Kingston, N.Y.

Saturday, March 1, 2008

Dear Fellow Wells Genealogist,

Our Wells family tree has been stuck for some time, and I’m hoping the internet will help us knock down our current and roadblock.
I’m a descendent of Henry Wells (b. 1720-40, d. 1790+). He resided for most of his life in New York, near the Albany area. He was married in 1759+/-, and his last known residence was Watervliet, N.Y. in 1790. Many Wells genealogists have spent endless hours going through New York baptism records of that time and have come up empty, giving us an indication that our Henry Wells wasn’t born in that part of New York.
We know Henry Wells married Nelly Van Vliet, whose parents were Teunis Van Vliet and Sarah Van Wagenen of Kingston, N.Y. Henry and Nelly had many children: Teunis (b. 1761), maybe a Samuel (b. 1763), Mary (b. 1765), Sarah (b. 1767), another Mary (b. 1769), Henry (b. 1771), Isaac (b. 1775), Jacob (b. 1775), Nelly (b. 1778) and John (b. 1780). Most of the children were born in Kinderhook, N.Y.
We suspect our Henry’s mother’s name was Mary. Also, his DNA is connected to a Henry Wells (b. 1672, d. 1712/14) of Bucks/Berks County, Pa.. Henry and Elizabeth Wells had nine children: William (b. 1691, Bucks County, Pa.), Joseph, John, Peter, James (b. 1703/05), Henry, Edward, Samuel and Abraham. The Pennsylvania Henry Wells was the oldest of six sons who descended from Edmund Wells (b. 1640, d. 1703+) and wife Mary, including a John (b. 1676), who married Hannah English. We have records starting Edmund Wells did some preaching in New Jersey (Burlington County?). We’ve also learned Edmund had an older brother, John, who had a son, John, who married Olive Hunt.
Due to the DNA link, we’re particularly interested in the brothers and descendents of Henry Wells, as well as Edmund Wells. However, some of us also suspect our Henry comes from a Wells line from Connecticut or Massachusetts.
If anyone has any information which may be helpful, a massive number of Wells genealogists would be grateful.
Thank you.

Sincerely,

Bill Wells
- Henry, Teunis (b. 1761), John Sr. (b. 1796), John Jr. (b. 1831), Eugene (b. 1862), Emmett (b. 1888), Ken (b. 1913), David (b. 1937), Bill (b. 1968)
