Classification: Query
Surnames: Welsh, Welsch, Kallaign, Kalleigh
Hi, I am researching my husband’s family. One of the surnames I am researching is Welsh.
His g-grandparents names are William and Mary Welsh. They were both born in Ireland (abt 1840 & 1848 respectively) and their oldest Daughter, Mary (abt. 1868), was also born in Ireland.
They appear on the 1880 Pa. census (spelled WELSCH,Wm) along with 5 other children born in Pa. Their names are B. E. (Barbara?) (abt. 1870), Delia (abt 1873), Annie (abt 1874), Michal (abt 1877) and Thomas (abt 1879).
From this I gather they immigrated sometime between 1868 and 1870 however I have been unable to locate their names on any ship lists for any timeframe.
I don't know where in Ireland they are from for sure, (family ‘thinks’ Mayo County), what Mary's maiden was (I've heard Kallaigh or Kalleigh but can't find that name anywhere...what might be another spelling?); Where they departed and where they landed nor what ship and date they traveled; I also don't have any other information as far as siblings for them or names for the proceeding generations, etc.
Michael (spelled Michal on the census) is my husband's grandfather; however most of the family is gone or out of touch and it’s been a struggle for every bit of information.
I would appreciate ANY information you may have about this family or suggestions you can offer to help me locate more information about this family. I am finding out that ‘William Welsh’ is the ‘John Smith’ of Ireland and I think most of them are married to Marys!
Thank you in advance!
