According to a newspaper article in The Daily Review, Decatur Illinois, 15 Jun 1908, pg 1, George E. Welton used an alias when he married Orpha Williams in Christian County, Illinois in 1903. When George was arrested for drunkenness, a letter was found in his pocket from his father who signed his name as Welton. George had told police that his name was George E. Lewis so the state's attorney contacted the police in Akron to get the facts. Turns out that George had another wife and children living in Akron, OH when he married Orpha. He pleaded guilty to a charge of bigamy and was sentenced to the penitentiary (Decatur Daily Review, Decatur IL, 13 Oct 1908, pg 11.)
Hopefully, this puts a hole in a brick wall for someone that is looking for George E. Welton but didn't know that George was using an alias and where to find him. I am not related. I came across these articles while looking for the obituary of an old settler.
Happy hunting - Pam
