That's Sophia Wilhelmina Esko, known by her family as Minnie. She was born on October 3, 1856, and baptized on October 7, 1856. Her parents were Pietari Persson Esko (1818-1880) and Maria Gabrielsdotter Bucht, Lampinen or Iivari (1825-1911). She was their seventh child. The family lived in Turtola Village, Turtola Parish, Finland, where they ran an inn and a farm. They had boats and horses for people wanting to travel along the Tornio Valley as well as their inn for guests. They also owned reindeer. The family was Finnish and spoke Finnish.

Minnie traveled to the United States with her older sister Greta Gustava Esko. Both worked as maids in Calumet when they got to America. The people Minnie worked for were Hiram Cole and his family. She was one of their maids. Gustava worked for the Ostrander family. Two sisters and a brother were already in America when Minnie and Gustava arrived. Later other brothers and sisters came, and after the death of the father, Minnie's mother Maria also immigrated to America.

Sofia (Minnie) Wenberg

I don't have much real information on Minnie Wenberg. According to all of the census records I have found, she was born in Finland in October, 1859 and she came to the states in 1870. According to some census records, both of her parents were Finnish, according to others, her father was Finnish and her mother was Swedish. As far as I know, she was married to Edward W. Wenberg on 20 November, 1880 in Houghton, MI. However, I don't have a copy of the marriage certificate.
According to the family lore I have heard, she came to the states as a young girl (per census records she was 11) and was raised by an uncle and aunt in Wisconsin or Minnesota. She taught school up in the Copper Country before, during, and/or after her marriage. Her maiden name was Esko (or Eski). That's about it - and none of that is substantiated in any way.
I'd be interested in any real information anyone has - including her actual dates of birth and death (is somebody close to check her headstone sometime?)...a record of her marriage to Edward W. Wenberg...her family name...and the name/location of the folks who raised her here in the states.
Re: WENBERG, Ben Michigan

My maternal grandmother was Phoebe Wenberg, born 11 May 1884 in Calumet. The Ben Wenberg you're referring to was her brother. Their parents were Edward W. Wenberg and Sofia (Wilhemina) Eski who were married 20 November, 1880 in Houghton, MI.

I spent almost a year living with my grandmother when she was 96 years old (she lived to be 98) and she told me a lot of stories about her family history, but I'm not sure how much was fact and how much was fabricated. I do know that Edward W. Wenberg (father of my grandmother and of Ben) was the prodigal son from a family of Swedish academics. According to my grandmother, Edward came from Uppsala where his father taught music at the University of Uppsala. My grandmother was a gifted pianist (my sister still has her old Brambach baby grand piano) and often told me stories about my great-great-grandfather being a composer and brilliant musician. One of her favorite (and oft-repeated) lines was "he played fourteen instruments - of course, I don't what any of them were."

I do know that my great-great-grandfather (who would have been Ben Wenberg's Swedish grandfather) died when my grandmother was about 17 and in her final year of high school. Her father's plan had always been for her to attend University in Uppsala - but those plans were abandoned upon the death of his father.

Another of my grandmother's favorite stories was how she ran up to her bedroom and locked herself in when they received the telegram regarding her grandfather's death. She said the family thought she wanted to be alone with her grief, but actually she didn't want them to see her laughing with joy because she had been given a reprieve from being shipped back to Sweden.

Instead of going back to Sweden, my grandmother attended Olivet College (my mother's Alma Mater) and City College of Detroit--now Wayne State, wehre my sister is a Professor of Education. Granny taught public school for 40 years, then went back to Wayne State for a degree in Special Ed (at age 62) so she could teach autistic children at the Children's Orthogenic School for another 20 years. She finally retired from full time teaching at the age of 82.

Although he had a university degree (again according to my grandmother) Edward Wenberg worked as a mechanic (what we would call a toolmaker today) up in the Copper Country. Late in life, he developed some sort of respiratory disease and was advised by his doctors to move someplace with milder winters. He lived his final years in the Detroit home of my grandmother and my grandfather (Noah Louden Hennigar) but I don't know the exact date of his death. My grandmother had a clipping of his obituary from one of the Detroit papers, but I have not been able to find it in her scrapbooks - or locate it online.

My great-grandmother, Sofia (Eski) Wenberg refused to come with her husband to Detroit. I believe she lived in Laurium; I know that she was a schoolteacher. I do not know her date and place of death or where she is interred.

As far as I know, the family name has been spelled Wenberg since my great-grandfather came to the States. I'm fairly certain that's how both my grandmother and her brother Ken spelled it. I am interesed in any further information anyone has about my grandmother's siblings or any possible clues to our Swedish ancestry. I haven't found any documentation or hard evidence about the Wennberg spelling or the Finnish connection although my grandmother believed that her mother was born in Sweden of Finnish parents. According to my grandmother, her mother came to the States at a very early age (about 4?) and was raised by an uncle and aunt who lived in Wisconsin.

Hope this helps a little.
Adjö sa länge!

I have a cousin named Robert, and Walter was an uncle. I met them only a couple of times. They lived in Houghton for a short period of time in the 1940's. The familys were never close. Ben had a brother in Minn. I found a grandson quite by accident doing research..I left at an early age. I know the history of the family but not the people. The last name was changed from Wennberg to Wenberg by Ben Wenberg. There are records in Sweeden. The family has many musicians.
ken

Hi Kimberly,

My office is in chaos and I am not sure where my info on the WENBERGs has gotten to for the moment. Please email me at my Gen. address... rbbtfarm@wavecable.com . I will be glad to locate it and look for your ancestor. I checked the siblings of that generation. Edward and Olaf was not in my immediate group.

The name Wenberg was from Winberg. From what I understand and have been given, the surname was chosen, possibly to be used for their emigration. Prior to that, the "Swedish" surname was determined by the father's first name and adding "son" for male children and "dotter" for female children.

The father of my "Wenberg Bros" was Andreas Johansson (Andrew Johnson). His father was Johannes Esaiasson. The third generation was Esaias Benjaminsson.

The double "nn" in Wenberg doesn't seem to be in my family group, but doesn't mean you are not connected. The "Bros." went to Joliet, Will Co. IL. My ancestor, Louis Wenberg (Ludvig Winberg) and descendants mostly stayed there until recently. One Wenberg brother went back to Sweden, who we have to thank for this info on the "Bros.". I am not sure about the other Bros.' descendants.

Look forward to hearing from you. Tricia M.

re your interesting remarks on Adolph Menjou et al. I know that Menjou was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylavania, but my father, now deceased, claims to have gone to school with him when they were boys in Cleveland, Ohio. They were both born in 1890 so there is some circumstantial logic to the claim. I am trying to find records on my father and knowing the name or location of a school may help. I haven't found anything on Mr. Menjou that goes back as far as his childhool. Thanks, Bob Barber

My WENBERG line is in Joliet, Will Co, IL. That's sw of Chicago. The four WENBERG Bros. immigrated around 1880 from Sweden. They briefly owned the Wenberg Stone Quarry in Joliet. My ancestor was Louis m. to Charlotte(Lottie)Soderlund (sp?). They had 2 girls & 2 boys - Laura & Elizabeth, neither married. Elmer had 2 daus. The other son, Fritz or maybe Fredrick disappeared about the time of WW1. Looking for his descendants, if any.

Wenberg connection

Just heard from a gentleman, who informed me that many Wenbergs are descended from Nils Annonsson, born/died in Sweden abt. 1620-1677. Since 1903, the descendants in Sweden have put out 4 descendants books, updating new contacts. He seemed to think another volume will be coming out in a few years.

According to those books, my Louis WENBERG in Joliet IL was actually Ludwig WINBERG. My grandparents, parents, and aunt/uncle have been listed there, possibly by my Grandfather's cousin, Cuyler, or his sister.

As soon as I learn more, I will be glad to share this info, but wanted everyone to know that we may access to a goldmine of infomation soon.

Elmer or Fritz Wenberg

Our family has a lost "Uncle" that I hope has some descendants out there. His name was Fritz Wenberg born July 1885, most likely in Joliet, Will County, IL. We do not know if Fritz was his actual name or a nickname. Supposedly around 1915, he had a fight with his sister over plans to marry. At which point he disappears.

Recently I discovered a WW1 Draft Registration : 5 June 1917
Elmer Wenberg, b. Jan 1888 in Joliet IL
occucpation : Mason Foreman
His address is 4811 Prairie Dr. Chicago IL
He has a wife and a son, names not listed

Also found Cuyler Wenberg, same date of registration; same address; same location of birth.

My grandfather was Elmer O. Wenberg of Joliet IL. He had a cousin named Cuyler Wenberg. At one time my grandfather hired a P.I. to try to find his brother, Fritz. No trace was ever found. My Grandfather was a Stone Mason. Many of the extended family were in this trade.

The coincidences have me thinking, could Fritz have taken his younger brother's name, Elmer ? I'm sure it is most unlikely, but you never know. If any of this matches your family and you are at a brickwall, maybe we should talk.......

Re: Wenberg connection

I have at least two ancestors in the Wenberg family from Sweden, being Aron Wenberg and August Wenberg, two brothers who came to the US in Ellis Island, NY in 1882. Aron was born in 1856 in Västergården 1, Ödenäs, Sweden and August was born in the same town in 1861. Their parents were Britta Christina Pettersdotter and Bryngel Pettersson (Persson). Both brothers apparently changed their names to Wenberg upon arrival into the US.

Does that fit into anyones family tree?

Thanks for any information you may have.

Ron
