I am seeking information on Frank Friedrick"Fred" Wendorf who immigrated to America in 1832 or 1833.He was from Pommern. He married Augusta Shudde/Shutte/Shouda and they lived in Grant County, Wisconsin and in the Slayton ,Minnesota area.
Their daughter was Martha Elsie Wendorf who married William Henry "Hank" Orner and lived in the Correctionville, Iowa area,Woodbury County.

My greatgrandmother's name was Lillie Wendorf, daughter of Hermann Martin Wendorf. Hermann Martin Wendorf had a brother named Adolphus C. Wendorf, March 25 1874 - January 24, 1937. Adolphus Wendorf died in Waco, TX. Maybe he was the grandfather of your Adolphus mentioned??

I don't think their were any Jewish, but that actaully is no proof. As far as I know traditionally not many Jews lived in this part of GErmany, so at least it is not very likely.

Hi Joyce,

My Wendorfs settled in Chicago as well. My grandparents were Carl (I think) Wendorf and his wife, Wilhelmina. Carl worked for the railroad as a mechanic.

They had children - Arthur, Edward, John (my dad), Minnie and Elsie.

Any of these names ring a bell?

Here's what I know about my Wendorf's:
John Christian Wilhelm Wendorf(b. 1864) had three siblings: Charles, Fred, and Margaret. His parents were Johan Heinrich Wendorf and his mother was Anna Margarithe Sohl(Soehl) He was born in Neuhaus an der Oste(near Bremen). His father was a shoemaker and thus he was sent off to Geversdorf to apprentice that trade. German records show three other children being born. I don't believe those children survived until adulthood. In 1881 German records show that he went off to America. I believe American census records show later. Who knows??? In Chicago, he owned a Florsheim shoe store(maybe two). It was located on Armitage.

Shirley A. Wendorf, 85, Green Bay, died Monday, May 14, 2007. She was born Jan. 7, 1922, in Stevens Point, to Alfred and Ella (Martin) Chapman. On July 19, 1944, she married Norbert Wendorf. He preceded her in death in 1982. Shirley had been employed as the office manager at a doctor's office.

Survivors include four children and their spouses, Gary and Karen Wendorf, Roanoke, Va.; Geoffrey Wendorf, Superior; Cynthia Klein, Grapevine, Texas; Wayne and Susan Wendorf, Howell, Mich.; eight grandchildren, Jason Wendorf, Chad (Gretchen) Wendorf, Heidi Wendorf, Timothy and Christopher Klein, Jennifer, Jeffrey and Jessica Wendorf; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Fern and Walter Lartz, Sheboygan; Nina and Arthur Van Ess, Dorothy Chapman, all of Green Bay.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norbert; and a sister, Margaret Patzke.

Friends may call at Blaney Funeral Home, 1521 Shawano Ave., from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Diane Rew officiating. To send online condolences, please go to www.BlaneyFuneral Home.com.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in her name to benefit the American Cancer Society.org

Hi Felix!
Just reviewing board messages and saw yours regarding Wendorfs' in Germany. My gr-grandfather was Frank (probably Franz) Wendorf B: Jan. 1858 and came to America before 1880. He married Bertha Nitz, B: 8/25/1857 in Buetowe (?), Germany.
My other gr-grandfather was Adolph R. Frank(e), B: 1861 in Berlin, Germany. He married Augusta Doer, B: 1857 in Berlin, Germany. They immigrated to America in 1903 w/ 7or 8 children. Do you know anything of these people? Hope your still on the net after all these years.

Hi Jan!
Just read your message re: origin of the name Wendorf. In doing some research, I discovered there are 4 villages named Wendorf in Germany. This would lead me to believe many of the Wendorf family may not be related. My family comes from Chicago, Il. area . MOST Wendorf's seem to be in Wis., Mi. & Mn. and I can't find a connection to any of them. Found your info to be very interesting.

Thanks for your reply Bob, but it doesn't look like there's any connection here. Most of the Wendorf's seem to have settled in Wi., Mi., & Minn., but I can;t find a connection there either.

Just saw your message on board & was surprised to see all the family names were the same. My grandfather was Robert C. Wendorf from Chicago, Il. His children were Gertrude, Robert D. (my father) Edward and George. Don't believe they were ever in Ohio, but the similarity of names is very unusual. Could there be a connection?

Bernice L. Wendorf

Bernice L. Wendorf, 86, Wausau, died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006, at Wausau Manor.

Bernice was born June 28, 1919, in Chicago to the late Jack and Emma (Strehlow) Hayes. She married Walter Wendorf in Wausau on Sept. 7, 1940. Walter preceded her in death June 17, 2000.

Bernice is survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 6, 2006, at Helke Funeral Home in Wausau. Entombment will be in Restlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of services at the funeral home.

According to the 1920 Wausau census, his father would be Otto and mother Hattie. His Wendorf grandmother would be Wilhelmina. This Walter was born March 9, 1914. No firsthand knowledge of this information, all obtained online.

Let me know if this helps or if you had already identified your relative.

I have been looking over my tree, but I have not found any names that match what you have listed. However, if you e-mail me directly I can send you the information that I do have and perhaps it may help. I do not know if you are aware of this, but there is a township of Stettin very near Wausau, WI, most likely named after the city in Germany. Many of the German farming families settled in this township, including mine. My Wendorf family came to the area in November/December of 1892. There is a chance that both of our Wendorf families may have been cousins and it may be why they settled in the same area.

Scot - I have a feeling I spoke with you on the telephone a few years back inquiring about your Wendorf roots. At the time you told me you had an elderly grandfather living on Lake Shore Dr. in Chicago. I have a great-uncle Herm born Aug. 8, 1893 and am curious to know if your grandfather, Herman, could be connected here. I never contacted him at the time because I felt I might be bothering him. There weren't that many Wendorf's in Chicago area years ago and most of them seemed to be my family.

My Father was Walter Jr. and of course his father was Walter Sr son of Franz Albert Wendorf. Walter Sr. was married to Lydia 'nee' Barnekow and they had 5 children; Leroy, Betty, Ruth, Walter, Mary.

I know my Grandfather, Walter Sr, worked on a farm when he was younger but Walter Jr was raised in West Allis. They attended Good Sheperd Luthern off of Greenfield Ave and lived down the street from that church.

The church was in West Allis and my grandparents and their children attended it. They were all confirmed there, pictures are in the founders hall downstairs at the church. I am trying to find out ''where'' the farm was that my grandfather worked on.

Was interested to know if you can find any info on a place my Great Grandfather Franz Albert Wendorf was born called Prust, Pomerania, Germany. I am sure it is now part of Poland since he was born August 18, 1872 and the countries borders have changed.
