Re: George Wenzel

Hello,

I saw your post and thought I'd reply. We have a George Wenzel (b. 27 Mar 1855 - d. 20 Sept 1898) who was married to Anna Barbara Zirkelbach. (My mother's family are Zirkelbach's and there were a number of Wenzel - Zirkelbach marriages.)

Children included Celia, Matthias, John G. Julius, George, Joseph, and Evaline. I actually have a phot image of George and Barbara, as well as one of four of the children. I also have an image of George's gravemarker in St. Joseph's, Ridgway, Illinois.

Anna Barbara was baptized on the 31st of August, at St. James, Gibson County, Indiana. Her sponsors were Henry and Barbara (Zirkelbach) Eberhard

Witnesses at the St. James wedding of Barbara and George were Andrew Zirkelbach, Catherine Wenzel, Wendelinus Wenzel, and Christina Zirkelbach.

At the time of the 1900 Federal Census, Barbara (1864 - 1902) was widowed and living in Pigeon Township of Evansville with her children. Bennet and Co's 1900 Evansville City Directory shows Barbara, widow of George, living at 232 L 5th, and working as a dressmaker. With her in the directory was her daughter Celia M. Wenzel, and there was a Rose Wenzel listed as a Domestic. Rose was probably the daughter of John M. Wenzel.

After George died, Anna Barbara remarried to Frank Bauer in 1901. This was Frank's second marriage. She is buried in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Gallatin County alongside Frank's other two wifes: Cecilia (1876 - 1945) and Katie (1864 - 1899). Katie was Katrina Wenzel, the daughter of Peter and Thresia, and also Anna (Wenzel) Zirkelbach's sister.

Also buried in St. Joseph's are her first husband, George (1854 - 1899) and one of their son, Joseph (1890 - 1892).

In 1910 Julius was living with his sister, Cecelia, and her husband, Thomas Doyle. On 12 Sept 1918, Matthew and John enlisted for World War I. Julius also joined, and Jane Spence believes he went to Michigan after the war.

I would be glad to help with your Wenzel research. Unfortunately, my Ancestry subscription expires on the 24 of Septemeber. If you would like to contact me directly, feel free to write mbnn@msn.com

regards and best wishes,

Mike Meredith

Looking for help if it is out there. My grandfather John or Johann Wenzel came into the US around 1891 and homesteaded in North Dakota. His brother Fred or Fredrick was with him and also homesteaded. Granddad married Louise Dickhoff in ND then moved to Superior WI sometime between 190 and the 1910 census. Can anybody help me with the hunt for either end of the family. And of course, any relatives out there?

I descend from his son Ben Wenzel, then from Ben's daughter Emma Wenzel(born about 1891/1892), then from her daughter Catherine Marie Hogansen. The most authoritative source on early family relationships is Mr Schramm in Germany.

I was in the SCA (Society of Creative Anachronisms)with a man by the name of Max Wenzel, he went by the SCA name "Ka", I believe he was about my age (I am 35).

It recently came to my attention through fellow SCA people that Max had died in approximately 2006. From what was relayed to me, he had moved out west (Where I am not exactly sure), went into some woods and committed suicide. No other details were given to me.

I know that I met him in Vermillion SD at an SCA event in approx. 1995-6, and that he was either living in or around Wisconsin or the Chicago area for a while (1997-2000) before his move "west"...

A burial plot, or even somewhere that I could send flowers.
I do realize that this is way past the fact, but he was my friend and better late than never to pay my respects.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

POW/MIA Korean War WENZEL

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Milwaukee County, Wisconsin as his home of record. His remains were never recovered. The Casualty Office has no family contact.

Soldier: FRANK JOHN WENZEL
Born: 1929
Date of loss: November 22,1950

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. The WENZEL family is one of those missing.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
My family were the Wenzels also, possibly from Pittsburgh.
My great great grandfatherm, Joseph A. Rising, married Annie Wenzel, the daughter of Henry Wenzel and Phoebe Grazier. Don't know any more, but I do know that Joseph Rising joined the PA National Guard the day after the sinking of the Maine which was Feb. 15, 1898. I only use that date to try to figure out his age. Don't know if any of this is relevant or not but this is my first visit to the message board and I thought I'd jump in with both feet!

Bonnie

Wenzels, Kellings, Kochs, Kallenbachs, Gleis, Fischers, Edelers

Tanya, what would you like? As you know, I've already undertaken research on those families - Wenzel, Koch, Fisher, Kelling, Glei, Edeler and Kallenbach. Detailed material is probably only available at a price directly from Osterwieck by working through a paid researcher in the area. Mr Gerhard Reiche is the guy but he is apparently now in his 80s and has very little English. Your request would need to be in German. Also, I have worked a number of surname threads, especially on Genforum, trying to add to this information without much luck. But you can try the following to see what I see. Google 'Kallenbach' and you will find an online genealogy that I think connects to us but it's not clear cut. There is no surname thread for this family but it does seem to come from one locality in Germany. And then there are the surname threads for Kelling [which I started] and Wenzel and Nelsen/Nelson and Koch and Fischer. Unfortunately these are very common surnames and I've yet to trip over other posters who are definitely related. Except the occasional Aussie!

I am tracing the line of my ancestor Heinrich Christian (Christian Heinrich) Wenzel who was born in Osterwieck, married there to Marie Charlotte Sophie (Sophie) Kelling, and emigrated to Australia with his three children. His ancestors came from Osterwieck and also from Kloster Allendorf in the Grand Duchy of Sachsen-Meiningin. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Catherine,

I have loads of August Wenzels in my family, none of them though born exactly in 1866. Check if your family comes from around Wuppertal ( Elberfeld, Barmen, Ronsdorf, Holthausen).

I'm looking for the parents of my g-grandmother, Mary Emma WENZEL, b. abt 1864, probably in Germany (Prussia). My mother's notes list five siblings (although there may be more), in no particular order:

William WENZEL;
Bertha A. WENZEL, b. Jul 1862 in Germany, m. Emil F DREIKORN of Holyoke, Mass.;
Emily WENZEL;
Elsie WENZEL, m. (unknown) MILLER, Rockville, Conn.;
Martha WENZEL – born and died Holyoke, Mass.;

I've found two WENZELL families in Holyoke in the 1880 US census that are a possible fit: the William WENZELL family is more likely than the August WENZELL family, but not conclusive.

The 1910 US Census lists her place of birth as Massachusetts. The 1920 US Census lists her as born in Germany, immigrated in 1866. I've found her sister Bertha's DREIKORN (Driecorn) children; one of them lists his mother's place of birth as Prussia (which gives support to the William WENZELL family identification).

Does anyone recognize this family?

I have a photo to share.
Martin Wenzel in Texas

I am trying to get any information I can regarding a Martin Wenzel, whom I believe to be my great-great grandfather and who came to this country from Prussia (with most of his family) in about the 1870s, initially settling in Washington County Texas and probably dying in or near Hamilton County Texas. My great grandfather, presumably the son of this man, was named August Wenzel and was not able to come over with the rest of the family. I would be grateful for any help. David Wenzel, dwenz@aol.com

My Great Grandfather was Frank Wenzel. He married my Great Grandmother Ida Wenzel (Lent). They lived on the Wyoming/Nebraska Border. I believe they moved from NY? I never met Great Grandpa Wenzel he died before I was born. Great Grandma lived well into her 90's. They had 2 Children. My Uncle Bernard Wenzel and My beloved Grandmother Thelma Malm. All my Grandparents were very Godly people. They lived a life deeper than just Christian talk. You knew they loved God because of the way they lived and loved others uncondtionally. What a honor it has been to have them to pattern my own life after.

Does anyone have information that links Frank K. (1822-1891) and Mary T. Wenzel (1825-?) to Hanover, Germany? Their children include Christina, Mary, Henry, Theodore Henry, Gus, Elizabeth, Millie, John, and Frank. I've reached a dead end with their immigration to the USA.

Are you sure about the last name because I have someone in my family by the name of Joseph Reiser born 1878. By 1900 Census he is not showing up anywhere, believe he died but when I don't know.
