Looking for info on relatives of Alphonse Louis Phillipe WERCK born in France c.1848. His father was Louis WERCK. He became a UK citizen in 1876 but had lived in the UK for at least 10 years in London fathering 4 children between 1870 and 1874 . He married in 1876 and had a son, Ernest WERCK, but I cannot find any other information. Any information on where he came from of where he went to would be appreciated.

Rebecca Ann Werk picture

Iam no relation to this family but yesterday I bought some pictures at a garage sale and one of them says "Rebecca Ann Werk Aug 19,1936" the other one says taken Feb 1937. Iam pretty sure this is the same family. Rebecca looks just like the girl in the other picture. I would like to get these back to thier family. Does anyone have any other pictures so I can match who they belong to??? If I could make a match so I could get them to thier right family,I would more than happy to send them to you. I just hate to see pictures that without a family.

Rhonda
Kitty72956@aol.com
Werk Mansion in Westwood, Cincinnati

I have been communicating with the new owner's of the Werk Estate in the Western hills area of Cincinnati. Built by Casimir L. Werk Sr., son of Michael Werk, it was eventually sold by Elsie Haberthear Werk, Casimir L. Werk Jr.'s wife. She died in 1986. She was actually Elsie Grantham at that time, having remarried again.
We have heard that Casimir Jr. may have been married prior to his marriage to Elsie. I have heard it may have been a Procter or a Gamble. We think Elsie may have been his secretary or someone who worked for him.
If anyone has any info about a previous Casimir Jr. marriage, please post a response.
Casimir and Elsie didn't have any children as far as I can tell.

I have two daughters listed so far, my great grandmother, Emelia Kamilla born 1859 Steinbach and her sister Berta born 1855. Emelia married Franz Ferdinand Raabe (my great grandfather)who died relatively young and then she married Karl Berberich. They had a daughter Fredericke who I understood came to the US to live with family. Whether she stayed, I do not know. The marriage date for Emil Strasser and Johanna Emilie Werk is 6 Jun 1850, Steinbach. I have family records that my grandfather did in WWII in Germany, and they have Johanna's middle name of Emilie underlined as the name she went by. I cannot read the occupation of Emil Strasser or Johann Ignaz Werk, Johanna's father. If you wish a copy of these old records, I can scan them.

Parents names on his records at Spring Grove Cemetery Emil Strasser Emilie Werk and he was born in Buhl .all to close . must be part of your family. There is only 29,000 people in Buhl so the odds are that there was only one Emil Strasser married to a Emilie Werk in the same time frame . Ron in Cincinnati We even have a photo of him we got today. I will have my cousin who is related to him contact you here.

I am very interested in the Albert Strassers family in Buhl. I have Emil Strasser, born 1828 Buhl, married to Johanna Emilie Werk, born 1829 Steinbach. Johanna was the daughter of Johann Werk, born 1774 Steinbach. My father always said that a side of his family (Strasser) had come to the US from Germany. What are your dates for Albert?

His mother Emilie and father Emil and there dates are right and his birthdate matches his family but he is not in the records. He worked for the M Werk Co. and married Michael Schwartz daughter .To much coineidence.

For anyone following this thread, the article being referred to on Michael Werk is listed under Michel Werk. If you search for Michael, you will only find a reference to his banking, and not the extensive article on his life.
His birth certificate lists him as Xavier Leon Jean Michel Werck. He is listed on immigration in The Alsace Emigration Book. Vol. 1. Apollo, PA: Closson Press, 1989. 277p. as Michel Werck. Later trips he is listed as Michael Werk, etc.

Thanks for the post. The information about Michael Schwartz is interesting. The article doesn't mention if the these two guys were related, or if maybe the Werk family owned the house before the Schwartz's, or what. The rest of the info I have. There are other books that have articles about Michael Werk, as well as the one you mentioned.
I don't remember anything in the Spring Grove record that mentioned the district of Steinbach. May I ask where you got that info? That, too, is interesting.

M. Werk was born in Marlenheim , France. in the distrct of Steinbach as stated at Sping Grove Cemetery records. Michael Schwartz ran the company after M . Werk retired. The reason I bring that up is M. Werk was born in Schwartz's house in Marlenheim. This is stated on web site : Cincinnati the queen city 1788- 1912. look up Michael Schwartz on that site and it will tell the whole story. Marlenheim is in Alsace France once part of Germany. ron from Cincinnati

In the previous reply, I neglected to say that Johanna's mother's reworked birthdate makes it plausible that she had her daughter in acceptable child bearing years (age 47). I also found a sister of Johanna's, in the IGI, Justine Eulalie Louise Werk, who married Ludwig Wick.

Johanna is a direct ancester. She married Emil Strasser of Buhl, Baden. Their daughter, Emelia Strasser, married Franz Ferdinand Raabe, my great grandfather. Emelia and Franz's son, Franz Rudolph Albert Raabe, my grandfather, compiled the family tree in the war years. In trying to find the parents of Johanna's mother, Maria Scholastika Weihsenrieder, I had noticed on my grandfather's records that her birthdate had been reworked. Recently, in the IGI, I found a Maria Brigitta Scholastica Weissenrieder, christened 25 Jan 1783, Gengenbach, Offenburg, Baden and parents: Johannis Weissenrieder and Maria Theresia Heitzmann. I believe this to be Johanna's mother, Maria's birth record. Also, I feel when my father translated this record, he mistakenly spelled it as Weihsenrieder, when in fact it was meant to be spelled with a double s. In the IGI there is no such name with the "h" in it.

Johann Ignaz Werk, born 29 Aug 1774, Steinbach, Baden, married Maria Scholastika Weihsenrieder in 11 Jul 1803, Renchen Baden. They had Johanna Emilie 25 May 1829, Steinbach, Baden and Justine Eulalie Louise born 1821 or earlier (she married Ludwig Wick, record is in IGI). I think Gustave was related because he was born around the same time period and in the same town. My grandfather, Franz Rudolph Albert Raabe (born in Steinbach, Baden, Germany)researched the family tree around WWII. This tree can be found at: http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jmtruem...

We don't know where Thomas "came from", so to speak. We know he shows as "adopted son" in the census. Was he Bertha's son out of wedlock (he was born before the other Sauers children) or maybe a child from somewhere else in the Werk family that they adopted? Don't know. I haven't looked into this too hard because he isn't in my direct line. I think he is in Cincinnati census data in 1930. What were your parents names?

Great to here we might be related. I'd love to add some more relations to my GGgrandfather's line.
What information do you have that makes you think there is a relationship between Gustave and Johanna Emilie Werk?
If you've looked at my info online, you will see that Gustave is my great great grandfather on my mother's side. He came to the US in 1855 and evetually worked for Michael Werk who was a very successful busnessman in Cincinnati, where I was born and still live. Michael had a large family and Gustave is buried in the Michael Werk family plot in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati. There are several children with names like Emilie in Michael's family. I'm sure they are related but I don't know how.
Any info you have would really be appreciated.
Thanks for the reply.
Rod

Likely they are related somehow. Without any hard records, it's hard to tell. I've found that there are often many people with the same name in an area and they don't even know if they are related to each other. One of these days I'll plan a trip to that area to see if I can find any records. Until then, I'll assume that I have a long lost cousin named Trueman!

I'm replying again because I've been going back over previous information, looking for more clues. You are the only person who seemed to have informatioon on the Werk's from back in Germany. I looked at the family tree you have posted again and noticed that you only have 2 Werks in your tree. The other thing I noticed, if your dates are accurate, is that Johanna Emilie would have been born when her mother was 55 years old. This would be highly unusual for those times.
You mentioned that your grandfather researched the family tree back around the war. Did he keep any records and/or did he have a particular source? I mention this because I've come across many Heimatbuch's from various Germanic countries that were compiled by inhabitants of a given town.
I have access to one from Birk Romania which is where my wife's father was born. His name was Binder. The book lists over 30 Binder families, over 50 Roth families, and over 100 Dienesch families. All of the folks in this town seemed to be named Johann, Georg, Stefan, Maria, Susanna, Theresa. It is very difficult to determine who is who.
The only reason I bring this up is that you mentioned that my Gustave was born within 15 years of Johanna and could be related. While I agree that they are probably related, we can't assume it was a direct relationship.
As I mentioned before, until I have info to the contrary, I will assume I have a long lost cousin. Is Johanna in your direct line?
If you would like to discuss any of this further, feel free to contact me directly at mrrweeks@cinci.rr.com
Later, Rod

Visited the Werk Plot today and took some pictures. It's a fairly large plot with not too many folks in it. It has an obelisk in the middle and graves around it. The individual markers on the early graves are just initials and the detail is on the obelisk. Others have the detail on the individual stones. I'll attach pictures of the obelisk. Let me know if you would like the pictures of other individual headstones.
Does anyone know who Anton Werk is? He is at to top of the obelisk on one side. The info is in German. He was born in Austria.

I am having a hard time tracking anything about my grandfather because I have been told he was orphaned. I think it might be that Bertha Hall had him out of wedlock? He lived at with the Sauers and Emma Hall, I guess Bertha's Mom. If you find anymore info please let me know.
