Joseph Henry Werner, age 77, passed away Thursday, April 2, 2009 at his home in Plainville. He had been a resident of Plainville for the past several years.
Joseph was born on June 1, 1931, in Hays, Kansas, the son of Joseph Peter and Antoinette Henrietta “Nettie” (Larson) Werner. He served our country in the United States Air Force from 1949 to 1969, at which time he retired at Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota as a Master Sergeant. He spent most of his time in the military stationed at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida and Sheppard Air Force Base, near Wichita Falls, Texas. He then went to work for Sears Roebuck and Company as a repairman from 1969 until his retirement in 1993. His time with Sears was spent in both Wichita Falls, Texas and Denver, Colorado. On July 29, 1989, Joseph married Margaret LaVonne Williams in Plainville. Joe was very fond of his career in the Air Force. He loved fishing, hunting, golfing, horses, and just about anything that involved being outdoors. He cherished the time he spent with his family. He was a member of the Plainville VFW Post 8871, and he was known as the official “Water Boy” for the Plainville Rural Fire Department.

Joe will be dearly missed by his wife, LaVonne, of the family home; his sons Joseph K. and Thomas of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Chuck Ong of College Station, Texas; his daughters Barbara Perkins and Sharon Ritchie of Wichita Falls, Texas, Cheri Day of Sutton, Alaska, Cindi Ruder of Edmond, Oklahoma, Megan Edgar of Grand Junction, Colorado, Colleen Vedder of McDonough, Georgia, and Nicki Kennedy of Charlotte, North Carolina; his brothers Richard, Leonard and Ronald of Plainville, and Vernon of Flagler, Colorado; his sister Mary Lee Schmidtberger of Pratt; 30 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Don, and a son Larry.

A Mass of Christian Burial is planned for 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 6, 2009 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Plainville with Father Galen Long as celebrant. A parish vigil service will be Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with a Knights of Columbus rosary immediately following.

Visitation will be Saturday from NOON to 8:00 p.m. and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Mosher-Kemp Family Funeral Home, 320 SW 2nd, Plainville, KS 67663.

Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to VFW Post 8871, Sacred Heart Church, HMC Hospice, or the Plainville Fire Department, and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
