The real Westcott family ?

Does anyone have any idea if there is only one Westcott/Wescott/etc. family , or are there several unrelated Westcott lines? I have my y-DNA marker values and have compared them to four other Westcotts. These are apparently four unrelated families (only two of the five match) where I though there would be only one family with a few possible mutations over 500 years.
The alternative explanation is that some men were given or assumed the name Wes(t)cott or variation because of adoption or some other reason. If this is the case then three of the four Westcotts' whose DNA I've checked do not descend from the original Westcott family. Which of the four sets of DNA that I've seen in the authentic Westcott line ?
Does anyone else have their y-DNA that they would like to compare ?
Fred Westcott

Louisa Agnes Westcott born Plymouth Devon

Hi

Does anyone have any knowledge of Louisa Agnes Westcott born about 1837 in Plymouth, Devon (obtained from censuses). She married James William Young in 1858 in Newington, Surrey (marriage certificate found) and gave her fathers name as James Westcott, Ironmonger.

I can't find anything of her early life (her history as the wife of James William Young has been traced.) I did find a James Westcott, ironmonger in the 1861 census in Plymouth, Devon and also in 1841 but Louisa does not appear there.

Does anyone have a stray Louisa disappearing from the family sometime in the 1850s that might be her or any other ideas of where she came from?

Thanks for your help.

Kim

Would you by any chance have the names of the children of Amos Westcott, son of Stukely? And also - where did Amos die? My understanding is that he died about 1690 - is there a more precise date?

Stukely's will states that he owned land in Warwick (Rhode Island, of course) but that he was living in Providence. Amos was his sole heir and executor of his will.

Thank you for any information that you can give me about Amos.

Hi,
My name is Peter Barker and I live in Devon now in Tiverton(not too far from Honiton)

I was born in Bishop's Stortford in Hertfordshire and my mother was a domestic servant with the Westcott family who resided in Thorngrove Road in B.S.
For reasons that I will not go into my mother and myself lived in with the Westcott family who were very kind to me and took me "under their wings" I won a scolarship to a public school and they very kindly supported me in my early years there.

During one Summer Holiday Mrs Dorothy Westcott took me to London and we visited St Pauls Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. She pointed out a memorial stone to me of George Blagdon Westcott(I am not sure in which place) and told me that her husband Godfrey Wescott was a direct ancestor of George Blagdon Westcott.
I am 72 now and of course the Westcotts died many years ago.
They had one daughter whose name was Diana who I believe is still living in Ipswich. I am sorry I do not remember her married name.
I still have a book given to me by Mr Westcott which is inscribed inside Happy Birthday Godfrey and dated 1904. Hope this info is of some interest to you.
By a strange coinicidence I have just moved to 22 Westcott Road!!! Kind Regards Peter Barker

James Westcoat, I believe is John D. Westcott's father. John D. d. Jefferson Co., Illinois. He was my gg-grandfather. I would be very interested in finding James' stone. I found the site for the cemetery, but stones are unreadable. Would appreciate any further information.

Help! Lost track of my Josiah Westcotts

I've been working on transcribing some of the family history from Roscoe Whitman's 1932 "History and Genealogy". I know that there are errors in it since I have already glanced at the Book of Appendices that followed. I'm having a particular problem isolating an error in my data that I believe originated with an error in the 1932 work for which I see no correction or addendum.

On page 181, after starting down the line of Stukely(4), Stukely(3), Jeremiah(2), Stukely(1), there is an entry for Josiah(3), which would indicate son of Jeremiah(2) and Hannah Gardiner. From this page, Josiah(3) married Mary Collins. On page 224, there is another entry for Josiah(4), clearly the same Josiah because he also married Mary Collins of the same Collins line. This would indicate that he is the son of Benjamin(3) and Bethiah Gardiner, which makes more sense. I know that something isn't right, but can't seem to get my head around what exactly isn't right so that I can clean up erroneous duplicates. Could somebody enlighten me?

Thank you.

Hi Louise
For your information i hold the Family Bible of John Westcott. Fanny (b. 11 Nov. 1842) is the first entry. I have yet to prove all the connections but i think the line goes back through 3x Jasper westcott, to Kenton. This branch of westcott appears to have arrived in Dawlish prior to 1779.

Terry

Born 1404, in England, and married to Alice Granville (b. 1420)?

The further I went back, the Wescott name changed (to Wescote, no "t.").

Noelle,
I have the Brandon Cemetery transcription book and on page 81 it states for Forest Dale Cemetery: Westcott, Johnson 1830-1896 Co. G. 12th Inf. then right under that it states: Abbie Johnson Mills, wife, 1833-1903 then directly under that entry it states: Mills, Susie A., her dau. 1863-1880 dau. of Henry & Abbie (Johnson) Mills, d. March 29, 1880. These entrys are noted as Row 8 in the cemetery with the main entry as Eaton, Silas 1848-1935, GAR Marker. There are a number of Reeds that make up the remainder of this row 8. Hope this helps.

Does anyone have a name of a public tree on Ancestry.com that is a reliable source of descendants of Guido Westcott. There are a lot of trees posted but I often see him listed as married in Rhode Island USA around 1426, which is a mean feat since Columbus didn't get there for another 66 years! When I see that fact listed I doubt the reliability of the rest of the tree as well.

Hello Paul it seems we have a strong family connection espesially if your grandmother as a Lily Burridge and your grandparents lived in Ebenezer Road, Paignton, then your grandfather would be my great Uncle. If so I will send my e-mail address as I have done a family tree of my line, it can be found on ancestry.co.uk

My name is Derek William Westcott, I live in Brixham, Devon and I was born here. If you have a great grand parent called Albert Edward Westcott who lived in Brixham then went to live in Paignton we might be related. I have just found out recently that members of his family had emigrated to Australia

Wescott creast and family name

The Wescott surname is thought to pre-date the Norman invasion of great Britain it is derived from the old English words “west” and “cot” together meaning West Cottage or
Shelter. The name wass used by several different parishes and hamlets in counties Gloucestershire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire. As a surname it would have first been used by someone who came from a Westcott.

Spelling variations are Wescote, Wescot, Wescott, Westcotte, and others.

First found in Devonshire where they held a family seat from very ancient times some say long before the Norman Conquest in 1066.

Hi
I have a Westcott line from Devon. John Westcott married Martha Cawker 22 May 1836 in Pinhoe. They had 3 children that I have found. Martha was the daughter of John Cawker and Elizabeth Norcott and was born in Holsworthy in 1796.
Accourding to the census of 1841 John Westcott was born in Devon around 1808. He was previously married prior to marrying Martha to Sussanna Sayer he marrried her 17 Aug 1828 and they had 3 children also.
I cant find any information on John's birth, I have found a possible birth in 1796 in Alphington but I dont know if this is the same person. Have you any information that might help me find him.

Westcott/Wescott/Westcoat in Quinton and Mullica New Jersey

I have a dead end and need some help if anybody out there has answers.

Albert Sickler Baner m Selena Westcott abt 1868 - probably in Salem County NJ. Selena was the daughter of William B. Westcott b 1822 and Lucinda Gale b 31 May 1852.
William B Westcott was listed in the 1880 census as Westcoat and he lived in Quinton NJ with his wife Elizabeth. His children were Selena, Sarah b 1844, Elizabeth b 1846, William L. b 1847, John Nelson b 1850, Gilbert b 1854, Mary b 1858, Deborah b 1866, and Wilhelmina (or Wilmina) b 1868.
Both the 1870 and 1860 censuses list the last name as Wescott. In 1870 a neighbor on the census is Simon Wescott b 1825 and his wife Ellen b 1835. (In the 1880 census Simon was in Bridgeton NJ and the family name is back to Westcott.)
In the 1860 census, William and Elizabeth are in Mullica NJ. Neighbors include Jacob Wescott b 1839 and his wife Eliza b 1833; David Wescott b 1832 and his wife Mary b 1835.
In the 1850 census he is in Mullica NJ, his last name is Westcott, and he's listed with: Absolom Westcott b 1811 and his wife Lucy A b 1821; Isaac Westcott b 1829 and his wife Sarah b 1824; Simon (although this census would put his DOB in 1824) who in this census is married to Sarah b 1822 - and living with them is a Robert Westcott b 1834 who is too old to be their son; and Authur Westcott b 1823 and his wife Mary Ann b 1825.
Also, living with William and his wife Lucinda in the 1850 census is Elizabeth Gale who appears to be Lucinda's sister. I don't have the proof, but Lucinda died 31 May 1852 and I'm guessing that William and Elizabeth were subsequently married.

I'm also guessing the correct last name is Westcott. Aside from the flip flopping last names, it appears that they are all related somehow, and their ages are appropriate for this, but my information stops there. I can't definitively hook them up. Does anyone have any information on these people? As far as I can tell, they were all born in NJ - and the 1880 census for William and Simon says they and their parents were born in NJ, but I saw another person's information in rootsweb which said William's parents were from CT. Unfortunately, nothing else about parents was available.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi there,

Having done some research from this website, my own family records and the Bishops Lydeard parish records, I believe I'm a direct descendent to Joel (or Joal) Westcott. My name is Martin Westcott, I think that Joel is my (four greats) Grandfather. From what I've established it went John, Joel, William, John, George, Wilfred and my Father John.

I'm fairly new to genealogy, but my mother has done some great groundwork, so I have a great start. I'd be happy to share any information I have.

My family is currently living in Devon in roughly the same area not far from Wiveliscombe, I emigrated to Australia in 2003.

I'm very interested to find out who Joel's wife or significant other was if anyone has any info.
Yes my John and Elizabeth are the ones living in Dawlish on the 1851 census.

I also agree that there has to be a link between us all somewhere! Given that there are so many Westcott families in the same area something has to give!

So far, John (1816) is the furthest I have gone back to. I haven't yet looked into siblings, etc, as I haven't picked up my tree in some time (I'm getting married in four months so am pretty busy planning!).

Thank you for your offer of having a look for any leads, it's greatly appreciated. But don't worry if you can't find the time! I'd much rather you concentrated on your tree and just let me know if anything crops up when you're doing your research.

Let me know if I can be of any help though.

Louise

Hi Chris,

I do have a Henry Westcott in my tree, born about 1844 to a John and an Elizabeth. If this isn't the same Henry, which it looks like it isn't, we may well be connected elsewhere.

I will admit, I've found out a lot of info on the Buttles from contacts I have made and I haven't really had the time to check a lot of it (there is a lot!). However, everyone seems to have similar info so I'm guessing it's at least 90% accurate!

You can contact me by email at louise_hardyz@yahoo.com or through Ancestry whatever's easiest.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Louise

Dear Louise:

My Westcott/Wescott family lived in Dawlish from about 1700 to at least the very late 1800's if not later. My gg grandfather Henry Wescott was born in Dawlish about 1841. He became a butcher & eventually wound up in Torquay, Devon. Henry was the son of John Wescott & Susannah Witeing.
Most of my Wescott's were carpenters. My grandfather Frederick Harold Wescott was apprenticed as a carpenter to his uncle John Wescott who lived in Dawlish. We could very well be related somewhere along the line. Please contact me.
Regards,

Chris Maslen

Hi Louise:

I'm descended from the other Henry Wescott/Westcott. He died young. He died in 1877, age 36.Henry's age is off in the 1851 census. Henry was alive for the 1841 census. There his age was 1 month. Henry was the s/o John Westcott & Susanne Whiting. John Westcott & Susanne also had the following children: Maryann, Elizabeth, John(b. 1837) & James. But that John Wescott(1837) is too young to be your John Westcott.

I take it your John & Elizabeth with a daughter Fanny are the ones who show up in the 1851 census living in Dawlish. The 1851 census shows that Elizabeth came from Milverton, Somerset. Is that correct?

With all those Westcott families living in Dawlish, I find it hard to believe that they are not related in some way.

I have several generations in the late 1700's & very early 1800's where I can't identify siblings for my Westcott family. It's unfortunate that everyone used the same given names. I'll take a look around & see if I can come up with some possible leads for you.

All the best,

Chris M.
