F. Michael Wester 1948-2009

F. Michael Wester A former assistant director of design and construction services for the University of California, left us Monday, August 3rd at the age of 61. His passing was peaceful. Michael was born in San Diego to his father Bostick and mother Marcella and soon moved to Borger, a small town in the panhandle of Texas. He was on the varsity football team, excelled in his classes and spent his summers working as a cowboy on the Four Sixes Ranch just outside of town. His left spur is still out on the plain somewhere. He attended Texas A&M University, where he lived in the first racially integrated dorm on campus. He graduated with a degree in architecture and soon after was married to Glenna Lea Sleeper. They moved to Los Angeles where Michael earned his masters degree from UCLA. The couple had two sons, Travis and Austin. Michael was a member of the American Institute of Architects, the American Institute of Certified Planners, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Society of Architectural Historians and the Society of College and University Planning. He was recognized many times for his work, including receiving the 1997 Inland Empire AIA/APA Vintage Award and the 1993 APA Chapter Award. He worked for the notable Jerde Partnership before taking his position in the office of the president of the University of California. He was married to Susan Hensley, who would remain his loving wife until his passing. He is survived by Susan, his two loving sons, and his grand-daughter Alahna Lea Wester. He will be remembered for his wit, his humor, and his charm. He had many friends who enjoyed his political insight, his loyalty and his Texan-bred ability to tell a good story. He was a loving father, a loyal husband and a talented architect. He will be missed.

Published in San Francisco Chronicle on August 9, 2009

Thank you for your reply. I would like to share data with you. Please email me at richajs2003@yahoo.com.

The reference that started me looking for Mrs. Wester is quoted below. If you have any information on the family history that Mrs. Wester wrote about her family, I would love to have it. I can send you the rest of the reference text if you would like it.

Historical Sketches of Franklin County by Edward Hull Davis (Edwards & Broughton Co., Raleigh, N.C., 1948)

Pages 253-257: Chapter LXXIV

"An article by M. S. Davis appearing in the Franklin Times, 11-November-1902 discusses the four Revolutionary soldiers buried at the “Richards-Davis-Bennett homestead. The homestead is said to be about five miles Northeast from Louisburg. The soldiers buried there are George and James Richards (brothers) and Micajah and James Davis (brothers). From the discussion, Micajah Davis married a daughter of George Richards; thus, the relationship and likely the reason for the interment at the homestead.

Mrs. Susan Bennett Wester, then of Hokes Bluff, Alabama wrote up the history of her ancestors. The following is given as this history in her own words: “My great-grandfather, George Richards and his brother James, came from Nansemond County, Va., before the Revolutionary war and settled at the Richards homestead, about five miles Northeast from Louisburg. The place was then Bute County, and under British rule; after 1779 it was in Franklin County and under colonial rule; later still it was and now is within the jurisdiction of the United States Government. Thus it will be seen that George Richards lived in two different counties and under three different governments and yet lived in the same house all the time. All I know of my Richards ancestors, I learned from my grandmother, who died 1844, when I was twelve years old..."
She was married to William Vann Wester originally from Franklin County, NC. Her parents were Richard Neal Bennett and Jane Davis Bennett. She also had one brother, Benjamin Franklin Bennett.

Susan Bennett Wester was living in Hokes Bluff, Alabama in about 1902.She was likely born in Franklin County, North Carolina about 1832. She is decended from George Richards who came to North Carolina before the Revolutionary War. Information from Franklin County, N.C. says she wrote a history of her family covering 200 years. I ma interested in finding informtion on Mrs. Wester as well as her family history. I believe that I come from her set of Richards in North Carolina and have been at a dead end for years. Her inofrmation may provide a significant clue to my roots. Any help or information that can be provided will be sincerely appreciated

My fathers's name is John Francis Wester. Family history is a little fuzzy but one of my grandfather's brothers was in the Phillipines around the turn of the century. The story is he became ill and returned to the US but his illness grew worse and he died before he could return to the Phillipines. He was an agronomist I believe.

I am a descendent of Elias Wester. I do not have a lot of information on his line except where it comes down to me. I am leaving town for 2 1/2 weeks and won't be able to provide any information until then. There was a person who was a resource to me regarding the Wester family, but I've lost contact with her. Her e-mail name was saedron. If anyone knows how to contact her, she'd be able to provide a lot of information. Please re-issue a request to the board during the first week of September to rattle my brain to re-connect with this forum so that I may share what I have.
Thanks

Book N, p. 336; Martha Boon Wester's will written in 1849, is found in Book N page 306.

They did have one child, Mildred Temperance Wester but Locky Junior was NOT a child of this Locky Wester - he was his nephew (son of Benjamin Wester...Lockey's brother). It was a common practice to use "Jr" if there was an older member of the community with the same name.

Sorry I can't provide copies of the will but I had the source information in my notes as to where to find it...

Hi my name is Della Wester (nichols) I don't know if we are related to the same Wester's or not, but the name Wester was origanally from Westray. Two brothers had gotten into a fight and one moved and changed the name to Wester. You'll find a lot if you look up the name Westray.
