The marriage of THOMAS WESTON & MARY ANN SPARHAM 1871-1874

The event I am trying to find in the marriage of my Great Grandparents.

My Great Grandfather was THOMAS WESTON born 17 Dec 1849 House 21 Radley Berkshire Died 28 Apr 1920 Newton Abbot Devon. His parents were Henry WESTON (1808 to 1892) & Mary Pocock (1811 to 1855) they lived in Radley Berkshire, although Henry was born in Broad Blunsdon Wiltshire.

My Great Grandmother was MARY ANN SPARHAM born 28 Apr 1854 in Stow Norton Suffolk. Died 27 Nov 1922 in Bovey Tracey Newton Abbot Devon.
Her mother was also called MARY ANN SPARHAM and she was born on 26 Mar 1831 and christened 10 Jul 1831 in Norton Suffolk. Her parents were JOSEPH SPARHAM & BIDDY (Bridget).

MARY ANN SPARHAM’s Birth Certificate gives her mother's name as MARY ANN SPARHAM. No fathers name is given, so she was probably Illegitimate. Her mother signed with an "X" so she was also illiterate. Her mother's occupation is given as Machine Worker.

MARY ANN SPARHAM was baptised (as per the IGI) as MARIANNA HINCHLEY SPARHAM on 4 Jun 1854 in Norton Suffolk, it is possible that her fathers name was HINCHLEY.

Before her unknown marriage to THOMAS WESTON she is therefore variously known as
Mary Ann SPARHAM
Mary Ann HINCHLEY SPARHAM
Marianna HINCHLEY SPARHAM
Mary Ann HINCHLEY

In the 1861 Census MARY ANN SPARHAM is aged 6 and living with grandparents Joseph & Bridget SPARHAM in Norton Suffolk - her mother is not there and I can find no record of her mother in this census.

n the 1871 census. In 1871 THOMAS was a boarder- aged 20, Unmarried, living at 11 Queen Street Swindon Wiltshire and working as a labourer at Swindon Iron Works. Mary was a Servant in Stow Norton Suffolk

At some point between 1871 and 1874 she married Thomas WESTON but I have, so far not found a record of their marriage.

In the 1881 Census she & Thomas have 2 daughters & 1 son she is aged 27. They were living at 5 Cetus Buildings Swindon Wiltshire. Thomas is an Engine driver with the Great Western Railway.
In the 1891 Census she & Thomas have 2 daughters & 2 sons she is aged 37. They are living in Newton Abbot, Devon and Thomas is an engine driver at a local brick works.
In the 1901 Census she & Thomas have 3 daughters & 5 sons she is aged 47 her name is given as "Annie".

Her maiden name on the birth certificate of Clara Ann WESTON (born 1874) is SPARHAM.
Her maiden name on the birth certificate of Alice Rose WESTON (born 1878) is HINCHLEY. (She is named on the certificate as "Marion" - probably a mishearing of Mary Anne).
Her maiden name on the birth certificate of my grandfather, Albert Charles WESTON (born 1893) is HINCHLEY.

Mary Ann died on 27 Nov 1922 at 14 Haytor Cottages Heathfield Bovey Tracey Newton Abbot Devon of Cardiac Failure. She is described on her Death Certificate as Aged 69 and the Widow of Thomas WESTON Stationery Engine Driver.

Thomas & Mary Ann had 11 children. 10 lived to grow up.
The first (Clara Ann WESTON) in 1875 when she was 20
The last (Arthur Sidney WESTON) in 1900 when she was 45

William Weston and Mary Fitts were married in Charleston in 1806. I believe that William was the son of William Weston who died in 1799 in Charleston. Young William lived on Johns Island. He died about 1825 and Isham Lowry took care of his children until they became of age.

Any help on these families would be appreciated.

Abigail Weston married Dr. John Henry Grant

Rebecca Weston married a Lowry who decsended from Isham Lowry, Sr

Elizabeth Weston married a Stanyarne (maybe Charles)

Daniel Michael Weston and William White Burroughs Weston married Sarah Walker and sister Martha Walker, respectively.

Weston's in Maine, USA

I am searching for information on Weston's in Maine. My maiden name is Weston and we have hit a dead end searching back through my fathers family tree.

So far we have:

Derek Cecil Jr. & Daniel Calsie Tracy
Born to Derek Cecil Tracy Sr. & Jessica Weston

Jessica, Caleb & Travis Weston
Born to Bruce Weston & Michelle Greenleaf

Bruce, Cheryl & Sandra Weston
Born to Frank William Weston & Lois Pauline Tanner

Frank, Hubert, Herman & Clinton Weston
Born to Malcom (Malcolm?) Weston & Calista Bridges

Malcom (Malcolm?), Elbridge & Evelyn Weston
Born to Frank Weston & Nellie (?)

Frank & Lucinda Weston
Born to (&) Weston & (??)

Sarah Wilson, Isaac, George Henry & John Colby Weston
Born to Caleb Clinton Weston & Jane (?)

Caleb Clinton Weston
Born to (?) Weston & (??)

This is as far back as we have managed to trace on this one part, if anyone has any information that could help us fill in the blanks, that would be great, Especially about Frank & Lucinda's Parents & possible other siblings, and the same for Clinton Caleb.

Frank & Lucinda is where things start to get fuzzy, when we first started going through the information we have available we thought Frank & Lucinda were Clinton Caleb Weston's Children, until we started looking further, Now we are just assuming that maybe he is their grandfather, but we do not know which of his sons would be their father.

We DO know that Lucinda married a man named James Melville Powers (aka E.M. Powers) and moved to Minnesota where they had 3 Children, one of which was named Lulu, I can not think of the other names right now.

Thank you in advance for any information you can provide.

I'm a Weston from South Carolina and have some info about the recent history of my family and would love to learn more. I think Plowden Weston was a Lt. Governor of the state of SC in the 1800's. I know some of my ancestor's fought in the civil war maybe Thomas Weston is one such. Someone once told me that "Westons" in England were able to keep thier land after conqueored by William. I believe the "Adams" and "Hopkins" family names are related to Weston. Francis Buckelely Weston was my father and I know in Columbia SC I have relitives til this day as well as in Charleston. Feel free to contact me by email(skiwest911@comcast.net)

Weston - VT - WI - MN

Caroline (wife of Enos Rew) was born approx Dec 1816 in Vermont, and died 12 Mar 1880 in Rapidan, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. Her death record states that her parents were "Abner & Polly" (no last name given). Her first son's middle name was "Weston". So I'm working on my assumption that this is "Caroline Weston". I have found much information on the Westons of Vermont, and have found several named Abner, but have yet to connect the dots. Can anyone help?

My grandfather, Harry Edmond Weston fought in world war one. At the end of the war, before he mustered, out he was in Merced, California. In abt. 1920 he married Nellie Grant Eilenberger. Nellie was born in Monmouth, Illinois in 1882. My father, Robert Grant Weston was born in Washington state, I believe in Seattle, in 1921. Where and when Harry was born I don't know. Harry and Nellie seperated when my father was still an infant. I was told Harry had probably remarried but no one knew this for sure. My father and all the members of his family that I knew are gone now. I would very much like to find out anything I could about my grandfather.

The marriage of THOMAS WESTON & MARY ANN SPARHAM

I can find no record of MARY ANN SPARHAM in the 1871 census. In 1871 THOMAS was a boarder- aged 20, Unmarried, living at 11 Queen Street Swindon Wiltshire and working as a labourer at Swindon Iron Works

Thomas & Mary Ann had 10 children. All lived to grow up.
The first (Clara Ann Weston) in 1875 when she was 20
The last (Arthur Sidney Weston) in 1900 when she was 45
WESTON genetic genealogy

Hello,

A fellow WESTON researcher told me recently that "WESTON is the most common surname you've never met". Results to date from the WESTON Worldwide Surname DNA Project show just how true this statement is. I so rarely meet any other WESTONs that I often wonder, and ask, if we may be related. Chances are, we aren't.

I have found 15 male WESTONs, including myself, so far who have taken a DNA genealogy test in order to see if they are related to other WESTONs. Of these 15, the DNA results show 11 unrelated branches. That is their most recent paternal common ancestor could not possibly have lived in the time since surnames came into use. Those branches are, in no specific order, by the earliest known residence of most distant known WESTON ancestor

1. Laporte, Indiana, c1864
2. Duxbury, Massachusetts, c1661 [poss. 1605, Cornwell, Oxford, England]
Note: Two men shown related on this branch
3. Putney, Surrey, England, c1799
4. Stone Easton, Somerset, England, c1732
5. Tenterden, Kent, England, c1762
6. Iredell Co, North Carolina, c1816
Note: Two men shown related on this branch
7. Stone, Kent, England, c1776
8. Erie Co, Pennsylvania, c1768
9. Greene Co., TN c1805 and Pennsyvlania, c1756
Note: Two men shown related on this branch
10. info not available
11. Reading/Salem, Massachusetts, c1631

I am awaiting DNA test results for three more male WESTONs; one whose paper research connects him to the Reading/Salem, Mass. WESTONs and the two others whose most distant ancestor was born at Newick, Sussex, England, c1797. It remains to be see if they actually fit into any of the above branches.

There are two good reasons to explain why we have so many unrelated branches. The first reason is males who got their WESTON surname from their mother or otherwise adopted WESTON as a surname, i.e. their biological father was not a WESTON. In this way two WESTONs might still be cousins through a female WESTON ancestor but it is not possible to show they are related using DNA genealogy.

The other reason for so many unrelated WESTON branches is the origin of the surname itself. "Weston" is an Old English word meaning 'west' end or side of the 'farm' or 'hamlet'. There are over 100 place names across England, Scotland and Wales with 'Weston' in the name. Many of the inhabitants of these places may have and likely did adopt it as their surname. Though WESTONs are in mostly concentrated in five pockets in central and southern England: Staffordshire, Leicestershire, Wiltshire, Sussex and Middlesex; the 1851 UK census shows male WESTONs born before 1813 in every county in England.

The lesson I have learned from this is to be very careful in assuming a WESTON in one record is the same WESTON in another. For example, I've been searching for my ancestor John WESTON, born before 1779, for 10 years. I can only assume he was born somewhere in England. His son was born at Putney, Surrey, England in 1799. It will take a significant amount of evidence to convince me now that any other John WESTON I find is one and the same.

It will greatly help mine and others research if more male WESTONs consider DNA genealogy testing. Free testing is available through the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation (http://www.smgf.org); or, commercial testing is available through several different companies including the one which hosts the WESTON Worldwide Surname DNA Project. Please contact me off-list if you'd like more info.

Cheers, David Weston
Nova Scotia, Canada

Project Administrator
WESTON Worldwide Surname DNA Project

P.S. Contact me off-list for the Project URL, as it is a (non-Ancestry.com) commercial website

Oklahoma Westons and Browns

I am looking for ancestors of David Paul Weston and Mary Virginia (Maiden name is Brown) Weston. Mary is the daughter of Shawnee and May Brown and David is the son of Putnam Earl and Earnest Sima Weston.

Mary V. Brown has/had a brother named Bob, and David has/had two brothers, one named Bill Henry (born in 1918.)

David was born on April 12 1919. Mary was born on December 31, 1920. David once worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Shawnee was part Cherokee and some documents state that he was a servant for Eligah, and Lula Walters in Burney Township of Oklahoma. I do not know the veracity of this Census report.

Mary and David Weston both moved to Portland, Oregon in the late 50's/Early 60's. They had three sons, David Brown, Earl Ransom, and William Rodgers.

Thank You!
Weston and Imes, Georgia and Alabama

I sent this query to this list four years ago, but thought it might be a good idea to send it again, since I imagine there are now many new subscribers to the board.

My husband's grandmother was named Bell Weston (although the family spells it Western) Turner, and her aunt, her mother's sister, was named Catherine Weston (spelled correctly) Imes. Bell's niece, her brother's daughter, born in 1903 (probably in Alabama), was named Etta Weston Turner. Catherine was born in 1846 in GA (probably Oglethorpe Co.), and Bell was born in 1879 in Cherokee Co., GA. I have wondered if there were a connection between the Imes family and a Weston family that would have caused these three women to be given Weston as a middle name. There is another surname possibility. The oldest woman with the Weston name, Catherine, was the daughter of John Imes and Mary Eads, so I guess a connection could have come through the Eads family. I would appreciate any help on this question.

My g-grandmother was supposedly named Ethel Weston - her maiden name. I have absolutely no info about her, I'm not even sure of the correct spelling of her name but she probably would have been born around the mid 1800's. Does this ring a bell to anyone out there? She could have come from PA as I know she and my g-grandfather lived there, but there is no record of their marriage in the town they lived and a family story indicates she may have come from someplace else. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are also Westons in the parish records of Bishops Cannings and All Cannings but as all parishes have been under the same vicarage for many years, it is possible that the parish record may not always reflect the actual location of the event.
A number of parish records have been lost over the years and I am looking to fill in the gaps. I would be grateful for any information.
Kevin

Using slash marks/to/separate/words

I notice that many people on these boards are using slash marks to separate surnames or words. You should know that this in essence hides both/names from the search engines. The search engine sees this Wesson/Weston as one word. The best separator is a comma, and a space. Hope this helps and Happy Hunting.
Ruel WESTON Biography, b. 1802 ME to IL to WI

From "History of La Crosse County, Wisconsin", 1881, p. 807.

City of La Crosse

RUEL WESTON, retired; has been a permanent resident of La Crosse since 1866. He resided here temporarily in the springs of 1856-57-58. He was born in Skowhegan, Somerset Co., Me., March 7, 1802; son of Stephen Weston, and lived on the farm on which he was born till he was 60 years old. He was one of a family of ten children who were all alive when the youngest was 45 years of age. Mr. Weston and two sisters now living in Brooklyn, N. Y., are the only survivors at this writing. He was married in Maine, Sept. 1, 1830, to Eliza Woodman, who was born in 1810, and is still living. Mr. Weston held several official positions in his native State, and represented his district in the State Legislature of 1860. He lived a short time in Bureau Co., Ill., previous to locating permanently in La Crosse. In addition to his farming, he was in the lumber business in Maine for about twenty years, and has also been in that business fourteen years of the time he has resided in La Crosse. Mr. and Mrs. Weston have four children - Joshua W., Reuel F., Sarah, now Mrs. Rufus Douglass, and John H. - all residents of La Crosse except the youngest, J. H., who is General Manager and Secretary of the "Red Elephant Mining Co.," of Colorado; office 33 Broad st., New York City.

[I am not related to this family and have no further information. I'm posting this as a service and hope it helps!]

Stanley Weston & Lydia Tanner Smith of Connecticut & Ohio 1800s

I'm looking for the names of the children of Lydia Tanner Smith and Stanley Weston. Lydia was born 14 Sep 1810 in Warren, Litchfield Co., CT, the daughter of Daniel Smith and Clarissa Curtis. I don't know Stanley's parents. He was born about 1807 probably in Warren, also. They moved to Ruggles, Huron Co. (later Ashland Co.), Ohio, marrying there in 1834, and they were in the 1840 census there. In 1850 they were in Green twp., District 2, Ashland Co., OH, with children: Mercy Theresa (b 1 Apr 1837), I. (female) b abt 1839/40, S. (female) b abt 1843, and W. (male) b abt 1845. The 1840 census indicated there may have been other, older children. I can't find this family in the 1860 census. Lydia died in 1867 (don't know where). There is a Stanley Westin, age 69, widower, in the 1880 census of Des Moines, IA, but I do not know if this is Lydia's husband. I could not find him in the 1870 census.

I understand that there is a family Bible for this Weston-Smith family and would love to know what it says about them. My ancestor, Ezra Daniel Smith, was a brother of Lydia.
McKee is. However, I am unable to locate these folk in the 1880 or any later census. I am trying to verify that Mary E. McKee was the daughter of John M. McKee (and his first wife, whose name I have as yet no record of). John M. McKee later married Eliza Jane Fisher and they settled in Bloomville, Ohio. Any suggestions welcome.

Weston of Franklin County Indiana

I have been researching the descendants of Joseph Weston of TN>IN>AR. So far I have sons John,Joseph,Benjamin,William,James,David,Thomas, all being born in Carter Co.,TN. I then found Joseph and the oldest son John on the 1820 Posey,Franklin,IN census. In 1830 I found Benjamin Weston in Not stated,Franklin,IN and also found two land patents for Benjamin totaling 160 acres in Franklin Co, IN applied for in the Cincinnati OH land office. In 1840 Not stated,Fountain (probably should have been Franklin)IN, I found Benjamin,David and Joseph. I am a descentant of Benjamin through his son James. James changed his line to Western and was born in Arkansas. You can find Benjamin in 1850 Village,Jackson,AR. Some of the family then moved to Pope and Searcy counties,AR. I would love to correspond with anyone from this line. I am desperate to find some kind of records from Carter TN to prove their birth dates.
Teresa Western-Rader
teresarader@century.net

Ichabod Weston - MA

I am looking for information on Ichabod Weston. I am descended from his son, Simeon.

Simeon was born 19 Mar. 1827 probably in Duxbury. (I do not have a BC, the town told me the records were destroyed, I do have a bible record) he married Ellen Mary Aloise Mulcay, 26 July 1859 in Chelsea MA.

Simeon is the son of Ichabod Weston and Betsey. I am almost certain this is Betsey Randall and that their marriage took place 9 May 1824 in Duxbury.

I have the children of Ichabod and Bestey from the bible record but not the parents. I would appreciate any further information if anyone has it.

Thank you,
Christina
caubin@adelphia.net

We know NOTHING about my grandmother except the following: Full name MAY be "Mary" Marguerite, strongly BELIEVE maiden name was CASE, born 16 Jul 1906 in Peoria, Illinois. At age 14 she was being raised by an Aunt and Uncle, Eugene and May (Donaldson?) Wertz along with May's grandson, Eugene Walter Edward Cuddington (whom we also seek info on). There definitely existed an Uncle Clarence Donaldson. Marguerite married Ralph P. Weston (twice!) in late 1920's and had a daughter Janice Joy. Married Myrl Stewart Engel in early 1930's and had 2 boys, M.S. (Stew) Jr., and James (Jim) Spafford, all now deceased. She shows up on only one census in 1920 at Wertz's and on Death Notification (Nov. 1975 in Liberal Kansas). No birth, marriage, other records or ancestors. Please help!
Sincerely yours,
Shari Engel Hogan

I have an original Cabinet Card photograph of “J. H. Weston, 42 Jaques St., Somerville, Mass.”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in about 1890, in East Somerville (Middlesex Co.) MA, and he looks to be about 45 years old.

I found John H. Weston in the 1910 Somerville census. He was age 67, and had been married 40 yrs. to Ella R. Weston. IGI shows they were married in 1870, and her name was Ella Rowena Hanchett. IGI also shows he was born Woburn, MA on 10 Jan 1843. Pedigree Resource File shows he was son of John and Louise Weston.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to John H.

Geneseo Republic April 13, 1877

Died

At her residence on Russell Avenue, in this city, at 8 o'clock Tuesday morning, April 10, 1877, after a long and painful illness, Mrs. Naomi Emery, wife of Artemas Emery, aged 72 years, 10 months, and 2 days.

The deceased, (before her marraige Naomi Weston), was born, and for many years lived, at Skobegan, Somerset county, Maine. The Weston family were numerous and prominent, and many of her relatives are men of high respectability and influence in Somerset county at the present time. Naomi Weston was joined in wedlock with Artemas Emery in December, 1824, and their Golden Wedding was celebrated by giving a large party at the residence of their son, Frank Emery, in this city, December 1874. After their marriage, Mr. Emery and wife lived many years in Penobecot county, Maine, where they raised a large family of children, the most of whom are left to mourn the death of their aged and dearly beloved mother. Nearly a quarter of a century ago they came to Geneseo, and here have resided in peace, plenty and comfort, surrounded by children and friends ever since.
Mrs. Emery was an excellent woman. None were ever more considerate to the poor, the needy, and those in distress. She had sympathetic heart, kind word, and open hand for all, and no one was esteemed more highly by neighbors and acquainteneces than she. She lived to a ripe old age, and fell to sleep peacefully and quietly at last. A husband, several children, and many friends mourn the loss they have met in her death.
Funeral services will be held at the residence of Mr. Emery to-day (Thursday) at 12 o'clock and at the M E Church at 1 o'clock pm.

Transcribers note: The cemetery book for Oakwood Cemetery Geneseo lists EMORY, Naomi died April 10 1877, buried block G, lot 55. Her husband (4-18-1887) and a Melissa Emory (1-6-1872) are buried with her.
