I will e-mail you more details later this week, but yes, Amos was born in Massachusetts. He and his brothers, John and Moses, were Loyalists who moved to Canada in the late 1780's and eventually received grants of land in Sutton, Quebec.

Amos later moved to Champaign Co., Ohio, where he died. His daughter, Olive Westover, born June 1, 1800 in Sutton, is my ancestor.

It looks like we are talking about the same line, but I haven't tied Amos Westover to Canada. My info says that he was born in Massachusetts, and his father, John, in Connecticut. My information may be false. I would really appreciate your help in finding out more and correcting it if it is wrong. Please email me at bouncy_as_can_be@yahoo.com.
Thanks, Chelsi

I am related to Edwin Ruthven Westover, but I do not recognize any of the other names you list. Edwin was born in Ohio and moved with his family to Salt Lake City in the late 1840's. He spent the rest of his life in Utah. Edwin's grandfather, Amos Westover, was born in Sutton, Quebec. Many of the Quebec Westovers later moved to Malahide Township, Elgin Co., Ontario and then on to Wisconsin and Minnesota.
I have both an Alexander and an Olive in my Westover line, brother and sister, but they were born in 1798 and 1800 in Sutton. Your Olive is the daughter of Alexander Westover (4 Feb 1873-19 Mar 1923)and Ermina (maiden surname unknown), born May 1888 in the USA (her info from 1911 census). She appears to be his second wife.

Alexander is the son of Moses Westover and Orilla Hepsibah Bonneau.

*While trying to locate docs & film through LDS info for my ggg-grandmother Amanda M. Allen (1807-1888) who married Solomon Holden (1785-1868) on 12 July 1827 in No Gower, Carleton Co., ON, Canada - the name Edwin Ruthwin Westover was typed onto the sheet, added to the Temple Records in 1952. I believe that he is listed as Amanda's 8th cousin in-law.
*Both the 1851 & 1881 Canadian Censuses list Amanda's birthplace as the USA. I cannot find any reference to the state or to her parents, although Charles could be her father's name and Wilton could be her mother's maiden name.
*Do you have any Allens, Holdens, Blanchards, Eastmans, Callanders or Beamans in your family tree - who were mostly born in Ontario, Canada?
Thank you for your kind assistance.
You can email me directly at - Cewhite%7@hotmail.com
Cathy Gallagher
Arizona, USA
*Where do you live in Canada!?

The deceased was the son of Enos Westover and was born at Frankstown on August 2, 1837, being in his 70th year at time of death. In his early life he followed the occupation of a teamster. The deceased was a member of the Zion Lutheran church and was an upright, respected citizen who admirably fulfilled a mission of usefulness in life. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. U. G. Lindsay and Mrs. Charles Hileman, both of Hollidaysburg; also by his venerable father, who is 91 years of age; one brother, Winfield, of Frankstown, and three sisters, Mrs. W. E. Rodkey and Mrs. Fred Gearhart, both of Altoona, and Mrs. David Hemphill, of Roanoke, Va.
I found this on http://www.deckervillelibrary.com/sanilac_county_draft_board...
"PRIVATE ORVA WESTOVER
MARLETTE
Was born in Lapeer County, October 9, 1896, son of Jacob and Martha Westover, acquired his education at the Marlette schools. His occupation was automobile repairman. He has six brothers and two sisters: Dan, Alivn, Melburn, William, Harold and Leon; Flossie and Gracia. He is a Selective Service man and went from this county to Camp Custer on September 21, 1917, sailed for France on February 25, 1918 , with Co. 11, 119th Artillery. He was in the hospital six months on account of an attack of spinal meningitis. He has not return home."

You should be able to obtain his military records (remember to request the COMPLETE set of records) and go from there. Also obtain death certificates. Most of the WESTOVERs in this country are from Jonas who came into CT int he 1600s. Some went to Canada during the American Revolution and some of their descendants came back down to the US.

Best wishes,
Jean

I have in my Family Tree Maker database that Maitland's parents were Nathaniel and A. Westover. I suspect that the source was a marriage record. However, this is not my direct line and I cannot find the file folder on this person, so it is probably in a pile of papers waiting to be recorded properly and filed away.
My interest in this person is his wife, Mary Ann Featherstone, who I think was a sister to my ancestor, Sarah Featherstone Hotchkiss.
I can be contacted privately at the address hibbardm at sympatico.ca

Hi, It is always so exciting when someone posts with a question re a direct ancestor. I have a John Wesderfer in my file. In the 1910 US Federal Census for PA-Philadelphia, he is probably deceased. The listing reads: Westerfer, Julia, head. 58, widow, 11 children born, 7 living, born Canada, both parents from Canada, immigration 1869, reanted home. Christian Wersderfer was my paternal grandfather. His father was Peter. In the 1870 ceensus of Columbia County, PA, Conyngham Township the entry reads: Wersderfer, Peter, age 49, Male, White, Laborer at Mines, Birthplace Prussia. My grandfather, Christian, was 18 at that time and already working in the mines, also.

Does this info match yours? I know that it is difficult with just little bits and pieces of info. I have a lot more but my computerized files aren't available right now.
Sincerely, Jill Susan Westover Ruspi

The Eno and Enos Family in America" (the 1985 revision)

Hi there. Does anyone have a copy of "The Eno and Enos Family in America" (the 1985 revision), by Douglas Richardson? I do all my research at the Newberry Library in Chicago and they only have the 1973 version.

Actually, what I'm looking for is information on Oliver (or John) Westover (b. 1775 in Sheffield, Berkshire, MA, m. Elizabeth Webster). My family records have him as a son of Oliver Westover (b. 1739, m. Jerusha Knapp) but I don't have any proof.

In the 1973 version of the book, Richardson follows the descendants of Nathaniel Westover and Sarah Mary Eno down to Oliver Westover and Jerusha Knapp and one of their children but doesn't mention Oliver Jr. I'm wondering if the 1985 revision goes further.

Or, regardless of whether you have the book, does anyone have any information on that family?

Thanks very much,
Dan Perrigan
I too am looking for information regarding a Westover family who lived in, or was associated with Sutton/Brome, Quebec. In particular I am looking for information regarding the parents or relatives of Olive Orilla Westover, born on May 20, 1909, according to my records. She is my husband's grandmother and, according to some sources, is related to ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL. Given that you are looking for an Alexander Westover, it seems that there might in fact be a connection.

I am writing a collective biography of the 169 librarians who headed neighborhood branch libraries of the New York Public Library, 1901-1950.

One of them was Frances L. Westover (1882-1972) who was also known as Helen. She worked at NYPL from 1910 until her retirement in 1946.

I am trying to determine what she did before joining NYPL and after her retirement. The Social Security Death Index indicates she died in Spencertown NY which is near her birthplace of Austerlitz NY. I would love to find an obituary.

Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Bob

Just read over your update on Johannes Westerfer. Yes, I believe he had died by that census. My grandmother, Cecelia was very young, and most of the kids had to quit school and go to work. The mines were what killed Johannes, black lung from working there. First time anyone has mentioned that, and I remember my grandmother recalling those years. It seemed Christian was Johannes brother, who came across from Germany with him, their mother Sophia and father Heinrich. I hope I have this right. I work on this so much lately, sometimes it seems like walking through history. My email is majamanx@yahoo.com. Thanks, Susanne

I have quite a bit of information on this Westover family as well as the Beals. Alexander's sister Olive was my 3rd great grandmother, and Electa Beal's brother Daniel was my 3rd great grandfather.

Alexander was actually born in Mississquoi Co., Quebec, where the family relocated as Loyalists after the Revolutionary War. I live in Canada and have obtained all the documentation. Our common ancestor, Amos Westover, father of Alexander and Olive, moved to Ohio about 1815.
