Mary Westwood of Sedgley, England?

Hi, all--I'm taking a break from the Edward Westwoods of Staffordshire, England/Belleville, Illinois for a bit (they're getting confusing!)

I'm researching another branch of my family tree at the moment, and came across another Westwood, also in Staffordshire. The information I have on her is:

Mary Westwood
Married Samuel Frost on June 12, 1780 in Sedgley, Staffordshire, England.
Had at least one daughter named Jane, born before October 1791.
Jane married Stephen Elwell on January 28, 1811, St Peter or Collegiate Church, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England.

Would anybody have anything more?

This is really getting interesting, because the Edward Westwoods are my mother's maternal ancestors. Mary Westwood is a paternal ancestress. I'm wondering if she'd end up turning up related to the two Edward Westwoods somehow.

Rev. Arnold F. Westwood, age 88,Born, Toledo, Ohio, son of,Rev. Horace Westwood and Elizabeth Farrow Westwood,*English immigrants*
Rev. Arnold F. Westwood,
August 21, 2009,
WINDSOR, Mass.- The Rev. Arnold Farrow Westwood died Sunday, August 16, at age 88 at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield as a result of injuries

sustained in a fall the previous day.
Beloved by family and friends, he lived life with zest and enthusiasm and embraced death without fear or regrets.

Born in Toledo, Ohio, on May 19, 1921, he was the son of the Rev. Horace Westwood and Elizabeth Farrow Westwood, both of whom were English immi-

grants. He was educated at University of California Berkley and Tufts University, where he received his Master of Sacred Theology in 1948.

While serving as a student minister under the Rev. Harold G. Arnold at the Theodore Parker Unitarian Church in West Roxbury, Mass., he fell in love

with the minister's daughter, Carolyn Freeman Arnold, and married her in 1945. Mr. Westwood spent 40 years in the Unitarian Universalist ministry, serving seven congregations from Illinois to Cape Cod. Under his leadership, two of them - Manchester and Westport Conn., built their first-ever buildings, the latter by the noted architect Victor Lundy. In his retirement in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts, Mr. Westwood and his wife turned their home into Windfields Farm Bed & Breakfast. In addition to hosting hundreds of guests from all over the world, they also enjoyed

producing award-winning maple syrup. For 20 years, Mr. and Mrs. Westwood made annual visits to Fredonia where he served as a

popular guest speaker for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Northern Chautauqua which meets at the Grange Hall in Fredonia.

Mr. Westwood was a devoted supporter of Rowe Camp and Conference Center in Rowe, Mass., where he served eight years on board of directors, four

of them as chair. He was also an enthusiastic supporter VIA Dance Collaborative, a New York based company founded in 2004

by his granddaughter, Adrienne Westwood, a 1999 graduate of Fredonia High School. He was thrilled to witness the company's per-

formance of Adrienne's choreography at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in Beckett, Mass., the night before he fell.

He was predeceased by his wife who died in 2001. Survivors include three sons, Jefferson Westwood of Fredonia and John F. Westwood and Harold A.

Westwood, both of Plainfield, Mass., and one daughter, Phoebe Bushway, also of Plainfield, and seven grandchildren. A memorial service will

be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 29 at the West Cummington (Mass.) Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers, the family

encourages acts of love and community-building, which were hallmarks of Mr. Westwood's life. Memorial contributions may be made

to the West Cummington Congregational Church or any other church or charity of one's choice.

Theodore Parker Unitarian Church,"
Unitarian Universalist Congregation,"
Congregational Church."

I have only just found your details. The Westwoods you have I believe are my direct decendants. john and Ann were my great-great-grand parents and their daughter emily married josiah Henry Ebourne around 1875.
This is fantastic as I have been unable to identify exact dates until now. I know my grandfather moved to Sheffield from Birmingham. He in turn married Ethel Blanche Wilby of Sheffield.
This is great. I'm so pleased I found this.
Best Wishes
John Westwood

On the 1851 and 1861 census recods he is living in Broadwaters with his grandparents. On his marriage certificate his father is shown as William Westwood.

There are some significant changes regarding the family route from England.
The family appears on the manifest of the LDS emmigrant ship,Sailor Prince in the Autumn of 1848 from Liverpool to New Orleans. In 1850 Fanny Tilley arrived from Liverpool on the LDS emigrant ship the Argo. Marrying her now late sister's husband William Joseph Westwood. There is some possiblity they left with John Tidwell for Salt Lake City in June 1852.

I am researching Westwood's in Birmingham/West Mids and Warwickshire area. Have traced back to Isaiah (Isaih)Westwood a Gun Stocker born circa 1825 (married Mary ? born circa 1825 Bell Mill Staffordshire)- six children Henry, Joshua, James, Harriet, Albert and Sarah Ann. The earliest positive results I have are in the 1851 census. In this and all subsequent census' dob = 1825.
I dont seem to be able to locate Isaiah's or his parents parents in the 1841 census(one possible hit Thomas and Sarah but Isaiah dob is 1821 and occ is a puddler).
Has anyone out there got any connections and any further info relating to Isaiah?

Update on my Westwood information of 2001

The Westwood family emigrated from Liverpool, England to New Orleans in 1848 on the 'Sailor Prince' and from there on then on a river steamer to St. Louis. William Joseph Westwood the son was never in Pennsylvania. Family oral history needs careful verification.

William Joseph Westwood, the son had married his first wife, Elizabeth Tilley in England in 1836 at Kingswinford in Staffordshire but was born in Stourbridge, Worcester.

His second wife, Fanny Tilley came over on the 'Argo' from Liverpool in 1850 and then to St. Louis was she married her deceased sister Elizabeth's husband, William Joseph Westwood.

The extended family was in St. Louis for the 1850 United States Census before proceeding to California through Salt Lake City to Vallejo where they farmed for about five years.

In 1860 the family went to Victoria, British Columbia for the gold rush at Gold Stream. Later on they migrated to the Nanaimo area.
So Pennsylvania is out. [This is an update and there is no complete guarantee that my information is unimpeachable and improvements are welcome.]
Any record of this family in Salt Lake from 1852-1855 would be most appreciated. Also, records of them in Vallejo,California.

Westwood of St Georges, Nottingham

Does anyone have any information on the Westwood family from St George's parish in Nottingham? My Grandmother Amy Westwood was born there in 1901 and her mother, Kate (nee Church) and father, Geoege Henry moved there between 1891 and 1901. George was a railway guard and was born in 1872 in Burton and Kate was born in Wellingborough in 1875.
I have difficulty in tracing Amy from when she was born in 1901 until her marriage to Richard Moule in 1932, in Kidderminster.
Any information would be grateful.

George Milnes was my husband's great grandfather. He married Esther Cope in November 1845, according to census records their address was Trouse Lane Wednesbury. (easily confused with Pearce). We know they sailed to NZ on the Ballarat and that he died at sea. Strangely his youngest son, my husband's grandfather Edward James Milnes is not listed as a passenger. He was born in Wednesbury 20th January 1865. The family settled in Thames.
Would be interested to know what the Westwood conection was.

Regards Maggie Milnes

I know he married a lady called Mary (maiden name unknown) and they had 10 children. The first was also William Westwood b.1830 from who I am directly descended.

I just wondered if anyone could help me with going back any further.

Thanks

Kate

The following was found at the Archives at the National Library in Wellington:
quote
Westwood Edward, nominator, 1865, references AP9/3 61/65 Repro 1615

May 22nd obligants Bevy? Lowe, Edw. Westwood and James Jones

Names - George Milnes?? (writing was not good!), 45 shoemaker, Esther Milnes, 40, Nathan, 16, Thomas, 14, George, 6, Sarah 4, Mary Ann 2 of Peauce Lane Wednesbury Staffordshire. The ship they came out of was the "Ballmat" which arrives January 5th, 1866
unquote

I think the writing on the document is obviously not good and that above is actually Trouse Lane and the ship they came on was the Ballarat as you say.

I only know that Edward Westwood and others nominated the Milne Family to come to NZ. Edward Westwood and Elizabeth Cornforth Smith sailed to NZ on the Columbus in 1864 with probably two of their children Sarah and Thomas. Although there is no record of Thomas (my gt grandfather) on the passenger list and we know he was born in Staffordshire from his death cert. Originally they went to Auckland and then settled in Foxton.

Regards
Patrice Hicks
I have been told that in 1866 the address for the MILVER's (Milne's) was PEARSE LANE, WEDNESBURY, STAFFORDSHIRE. (It states Edward Westwood a nominator for a colonial Nominated family whose details are ; Milne family George Milne, Esther, Nathan, Thomas, George, Sarah, Mary Ann - they arrived in Auckland, NZ 1866 on the "Ballarat" - on the shipping list their last name is MILVER not as stated Milne.

If this is the same couple they married in 18 Apr 1861 in Bilston, Staffordshire and then came to Auckland from England on the Columbus on 11 Oct 1864 with their daughter Sarah. However there is no sign of Hannah Westwood or their son Thomas Westwood (my gt grandfather) on the Columbus passenger list just Edward, Elizabeth & Sarah Westwood. Thomas was born abt 1863 in Wednesbury and definitely came to NZ at some point but I have been unable to find out when. What happened to Hannah I wonder as she is also not on the Columbus passenger list.

Thomas, John and Edward Westwood were all early settlers in NZ and have many descendants and this has been well researched. However I would be very interested to find out more about descendants of Sarah, Ellen, Elizabeth, Lavinia and Edith Westwood which I know little about and were in the same family.

Also I think that this may have been Edward Westwood's parents and siblings (from the IGI):
Edward Westwood b approx 1805 Sedgley, Stafford
Hannah Westwood (nee Giles) b 7 Nov 1802 Sedgley, Stafford
married to Edward 4 Apr 1825, Sedgley, Stafford
Samuel Westwood b 30 Dec 1827 Sedgley, Stafford
Elizabeth Westwood b abt 1830 Sedgley, Stafford
Emma Westwood b 16 Jun 1831 Sedgley, Stafford
Sarah Westwood b 1832 Sedgley, Stafford
Thomas Westwood b 1834 Sedgley, Stafford
Edward Westwood b 28 Apr 1837, Brierly Hill, Stafford d 19 Sept 1907 Pahiatua, NZ
Abigail Westwood b Mar 1841, Dudley married William Jones b 1837-1839, Moxley or Darlaston, Staffordshire

Does anyone know this family, I have not have all the correct names?

Unfortunately Ivor Westwood passed away a few years ago. Although I never met Ivor, I know that his gt grandfather Edward Westwood is also my gt gt grandfather. Ivor was a descendant of John Westwood and I am a descendant of Thomas Westwood.

Regards
Patrice Hicks
