My grandmother was a Wales, born in Gateshead, Durham. I have found in my files 3 Richard Wales born Bedlington and Durham. Her father, was born as Joseph Wailes! How would I send the info?

One, born in 1837/38, shows some children born Bedlington, then two children born in AMERICA, then two in Durham, UK. So he must have been in the US for a few years, and gone back to UK

Regards, Rob Hall, Katy, TEXAS

I am not able to fully decipher your posting concerning James and Joanna Whales. Are you saying they were also adopted, besides your mother, or are they the birth parents of your mother?

Please reply as we know of at least two adoptions from a Whales and reason to believe there were two others. Whales as you likely know is an uncommon surname, and to see adoption connected with the name is rare. (Very rare, as yours in the only such posting.)

If this at all interest you please reply to JamesMyers1948@yahoo.com

Hi,
I beleive I have some of his relatives.2 daughters: catherine (b.1774) and hannah(b.1770-75) whales (wales). Both of Cornish, maine
grandson: Simeon (b.1822-24)cornish maine, and died in Hiram1903
Son: John whales of cornish maine. married mary holmes around 1824
Both Whales women were from parsonfield/cornish, maine. catherine married thomas pendexter. hanna married thomas's brother, paul pendexter. lists hannah and catherine as originally from western reserve in ohio. catherine(whales) and Thomas pendexter had a daughter named catherine (b.1794) who married Nathaniel Parker(b.1791) They had a son named Thomas Parker(b.1828). Thomas is my g-g-g-grandfather. My particular search is looking for his wife. It does not list a wife in the 1850-1870 census. Just Thomas Parker and the children. According to maine records at that time, it was against the law to marry anyone of "color" including native americans.Since thomas was at least 25-50% native american through Catherine Whales, it might make sense he married a native american. If you have since got any more information, I would be very greatful to hearr from you.
candace M. Corthell

Hi,
I think i may have some kind of link here. Cornish/parsonfield, Maine. I have both a Catherine Whales(wales) (b. 1774) (died-1827) lists her as native american.Catherine married Thomas pendexter (b.8/16/1767)around 1790. children were:
Anna-1792
Catherine-1794 m. nathaniel Parker (my g-g-g-g-grandfather)
Thomas(d.young)
jonathan-1801
eliza-1800?
henry-1804
ruth-1805
jerusha-1806
sara-1817
george-1828(mother is mary berry)
david w. 1830(mother is mary berry)

What I believe may be her sister is Hannah whales . she married Paul Pendexter(thomas's brother) in 1788.
Children are:
paul jr.-1792
sarah-1794
nathan-1797
henry-1800
william-1805
Both women are around the same age , and both come from Cornish maine.Lists both women as coming from western reservation in ohio. I am not sure when their father moved from ohio to parsonfield/cornish maine. Hope this helps. If you have gotten further information since posting your message about this,I would be very greatfulfor anything you can share.

My Great Great Grandfather was James WHALES who emigrated from England according to the Canadian 1881 census. My Grandmother always said he was from Wales so maybe the authorities did not distinguish between England and Wales as both were aprt of the UK. His son Michael lived at Prince Edward Island at the time of the 1901 census and his daughter Blanche Reta (Rita) was my grandmother. I have had no luck in tracing the family any further. Michael may have dropped the 'H' from the surname and become WALES but this may be an error on the part of the people entering the name . There is no WHALES surname list in Canada that I can find, although I do not live there anymore. James WHALES was a gardener and his son Michael was an engineer according to the 1901 census. My grandmother told me that he had worked on the first pipe line under the ocean....Good luck with your searching your WHALES family.
Jan

I am related by marriage to the Whales family of cleveland ohio, and am looking for anyone with the same Name or info on Walter Whales, my husband's grandfather who died sometime around 1950 or history of the family before the 1960's of which we have some info. They lived in Cleveland but may have come from elsewhere, possibly scotland. I have been searching for 22 years and no one has been able to find any info on our family. It is possible there is some native american blood in the family, of which tribe I am not sure.
