Hello
My family are Whartons and Lovells. I believe there are a few cousins that are Lees. I do not know much about where we came from, my grandpa and granny always said their families came from England. My great grandfather (Meshach) was given to a children's home after his fater died. My granny believes her family lived in Liverpool England at one time. The family has lived in many places in the United States including Ohio, Alabama and Georgia. Any information anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

Hello there.

I read your post with great interest. I believe we may be related.

My name is Paul Waggett, I am the great grandson of Thomas Waggett and Kezia(h) Wharton. Thomas, I believe was born in Burton in Lonsdale and Kezia(h) hailed from the North East.

I have not found any info on Kezia(h) but I would guess her DoB would be in the early 1880's. My family has always believed that the Wharton side of the family was Romany.

Kezia(h) and Thomas had a number of children -

Mary,
Thomas,
Isabella,
Ada,
Gilderoy,
and lastly, Wilfred, my Grandfather.

Thomas and Kezia moved to the Isle of Man in c.1910.

I look forward to hearing from you in due course!

Best Wishes,
Paul.
My Great great great grandfather was Richard Wharton born 1803 in Ireland. He was a mariner who settled in Liverpool. I can only find him on the 1861 cencus. Richard had 6 children and one was my GG GM Alice who married Joseph Rowlands. Alice was, I believe, in Walton workhouse in Liverpool. I am trying to find out more about good..or bad...old Richard and his origins. Any help gratefully received.
Jo

I have not gotton back further than Jonas Wharton. This line is my next project , I have seen mistakes on Ancestry and sources quoted are other peoples trees. I will follow the leads you presented and see if I can actually get a document with the name Runyon on it. Tax records , census , did not give me a line back on Wharton. I will definately get back to you with anything I can verify.
Thankyou for responding Pat

Re: Wharton/Runyon

Rachel’s maiden name was Runyon or Runyan. I’ve seen it both ways. Ancestry has them marrying 11/9/1837 in Hunterdon Co., NJ, although they were born in PA as were their first few children. They then moved to NJ. Ancestry has some trees that say Rachel was the daughter of Abner and Rebecca Johnson Runyon, but that is suspect. Rebecca is shown as born in 1757. By the 1860 and 1880 censuses, Rachel was born about 1815. That would make Rebecca about 58 when Rachel was born.
Do you have anything on the parents of Jonas Wharton? I suspect him to be the son of Timothy and Elizabeth Cox Wharton and grandson of Nehemiah and Elizabeth Brelsford Wharton. Nehemiah was born in Bucks Co., PA to a Quaker family but was dropped by the society when he married Elizabeth as her family were no longer Quakers. Elizabeth Cox Wharton’s father was Jonas Cox so that might be for whom Jonas was named. Timothy died in 1830 but his 1820 census has a son who is a match for Jonas.
Regards, Dave
If you are still willing to share info I would gladly share what I have pulled up and photos I have found. There is an interesting article in The History of St. Louis" pub 1909 documenting the children of Robert R.
Does anyone have any information that could help in tracking down an S.S. Wharton who lived in the early 19th century? I own a book that was published in 1816 titled "Plutarch's Lives" and has 3 signatures of an S.S. Wharton (no date). I was hoping that one of the Wharton historians here could help identify who the owner of this book could be. Any and all help would be appreciated!
Karen,
about the use of the Wharton coat of arm. When the Wharton DNA Studywas started I thought that practically all Whartons descended from the original Wharton family of Westmoreland, England. DNA results are all over the place. Now the question is, which Wharton line descends from the original family. To date we have yet to find a living male Wharton who is known to descend from that family, for DNA testing, so we don't know who has the right to use the coat.
This brings up another question. Do you know of any living male Whartons who descend from your John? We would sure like to test one.
Dave

Karen,
The following is everything than Nathan Earl Wharton wrote about the Whartons of Cumberland.
"CUMBERLAND COUNTY WHARTONS
Another of that very large group of Colonists who were born a generation before the Rev War broke out but whose vital records are elusive, was Thomas Wharton who lived in Cumberland County, Pa. I can give only the briefest outline of his genealogy, as follows:
CU-1, THOMAS WHARTON, said to have been b 1758 and d 1831 in Cumberland Co., Pa. He was a Rev War veteran and is listed as a private in Capt John Carother's Co. 3rd Batt. Near the close of the war he mar SUSANNA, by whom at least the following Children:
CU-2, ELIZABETH, b 1784. She mar WILLIAM STACKMILLER.
CU-3, THOMAS Jr., who remained in Cumberland?
CU-4, JOHN, b prob abt 1790.

CU-4, JOHN WHARTON, b prob abt 1790 in Cumberland. He mar a Miss HOLTZ and (2) a Miss McMILLEN and had children by each wife. Either he or his son James, or both moved into Ohio. He had at least the following Children:
CU-5, JAMES, b 1817. He mar NANCY WILLIAMS and was founder of a line living at Ashland, Ohio.
CU-6, THOMAS, b Mar 7, 1835. No data."

N. E. Wharton coded all of his individuals with a number, a letter or a combination of both, hence th CU-1, etc. A little about "The Wharton Sleeve". N. E. Wharton finished it in 1949. In 1963, after NEW's death. Robert Wharton Moorhouse added notes to the original, had it typed, had a limited number of xerographic copies made and distributed them to certain individuals and the LOC. My copy is probably a third or fourth generation xerographic copy.
I don't know where I found Susanna's maiden name, Dill, but I had written it in my copy. You, of course corrected the Stackmiller to Stakemiller.
Regards, Dave

Pat,
Back in 2005 I gave you some wrong information. I said that your line with Nehemiah Wharton traced back through John and Susannah Truitt Wharton to John’s parents Thomas and Margaret Gilpin Wharton. I found out some time ago that Thomas and Margaret are not that John’s parents. Thomas and Margaret had a son, John, but he died before 1702. Your John died in 1721 and his parents are still unknown.
Recently I was again, asked about Nehemiah having a son Thomas. I did some more research and am pretty sure I’ve found him. Maybe you have also, by now. Nehemiah’s household in Bucks County in 1790 contained 6 males under 16, 1 male over 16 and 1 female. I knew that he had sons, Timothy, Silas, Samuel and David. I believe that I have found 2 more, Daniel and Thomas. The last finding of Nehemiah is in the 1830 Warren Co., OH, census, living beside son Silas with Daniel on the same page. In the 1850 Warren Co. census we find Silas 75 b: PA, wife Phebe 61 b: VA and Daniel 61 b: PA, wife Margaret 66 b: PA. And in Montgomery Co. which borders Warren we find Samuel Wharton 65 b: PA, wife Deharal 63 b: PA and Nehemiah 21 b: OH, in one household (Nehemiah is likely a son or grandson). Next door to Samuel is Thomas Wharton 64 b: PA, wife Jemima 50 b: NJ and probable children Eyra 19 b: OH and Jason 17 b: OH. Eyra is likely Ezra b: 12/27/1829. Jason was b: 2/3/1833 and there was a David b: 3/3/1828. Note the children’s names. Jemima was Jemima Lashley b: 4/6/1799 and m: 3/10/1827. She was previously married to Benjamine Shinn. I wonder if Thomas was married before.
William Wharton baptised 20/05/1836 in Great Haseley, Oxon.

His father was also William but i little information on him except that he was born "in the county" on the 1841 Census abt 1818. He married Ann Read 4th January 1836 and died quite young, when and where i have no idea. Ann was listed as a widow on the 1851 census and she remarried many years later to William Bishop.

Going back to William Jnr, He married Elizabeth Adams and they had 13 children, the first one being William Henry WHARTON born 1863.

If you think you make a connection then please contact me.

Christine

I will bring it up at our reunion on Sunday and see if anyone is interested in parting with $150 to get their DNA added to the Wharton Study.
Thank you so very much Dave! I will copy this and send it on to my cousin (he is researching for his granddaughters). You are probably aware that the John mentioned, who moved to Ohio, ended up being the father of 16 children between his two wives. We are scattered all over the country now.

Do you think we have the right to use the Coat of Arms--The Sleeve--in our Historian Reports? The historian reports and records for this family have fallen into my lap and I'd like to do some more research about the Wharton family. I do not want to reference it if it is not permitted. Thanks again! ~best wishes~
Karen Glenn Farr; GGranddaughter Anna Mae Wharton Glenn

I also didn't mean to offend--it was my attempt to be funny! Dave, I have a question for you about our Thomas (1758-1831) and wife Susannah Dill Wharton. My 3rd cousin is attempting to collect all the official documents to join the DAR and is experiencing difficulty finding one last piece of proof that Thomas and Susannah are the parents of John (1789-1862). Is there a photocopied page from the Wharton Sleeve which talks of this family? The DAR might accept that as evidence. Unfortunately, we are no where near the Library of Congress to go look it up ourselves! Our Thomas is already listed in the DAR records and has been used by other members, but not for our branch of the family. Thanks for any help you can offer.
Karen Glenn Farr
