I bet you are a descendant of Elisha Whatley. He was the oldest child of Phineas Whatley and Julia Mills. My line is Elisha's brother, Archibald Achilles Whatley.
Elisha and Archibald had a brother, Jesse Mercer Whatley who my great-uncle Jess was named for. this older Jesse Whatley must ber the one whom you referred. I'll e-mail all of Phineas' children to you. There were about 7 or 8.
If you are, indeed, a descendant of Elisha Whatley, Sr., you are related to me! Elisha and Elisha Whatley, Jr. were known to have land in what became Franklin Parish, which was once partr of Catahoula Parish. Boeff Prairie was the area where some of them lived. Phineas Whatley was said to have died in that area before Franklin Parish was founded.
Please send your e-mail address and I can forward other info. I think I have Phineas' family posted, but I'll have to check on his son, Elisha. Elisha may also have been rewarded land for having served in the War of 1812.

Doug Roark
dougroark@att.net

Marilyn -

William B. Whatley and Phineas Whatley had several stories told abt. them like that. They were conversing w/local Indians in Louisiana. Several Choctaw eventually lived in the Catahoula Area. Stories also arose that Whatleys helped several Choctaw relocate in Louisiana who were in other areas. There is a Chapter of Choctaw (reservation type) near Jena, LA. today.
I'll cont. to help you find your ancestors.

Doug

Sorry, I didn't really report the lineage very well.

Grandfather: David Walton King

Great-grandfather: David Jeremiah King

Great-grandmother: Mary Jane 'Molly' Whatley

Great-great-grandfather: ? Whatley

Great-great-grandmother: Full-blood Choctaw...photo (tin type), no name

It has just occurred to me that the details of my Great-grandfather (David Jeremiah King) might make him half Choctaw. He was reported to be an orphan who lived in Pearl River, Miss area and came to Little River area as a teenager. His father's (my g-g-grandfather's) name was Robert Benjamin King.

I also read an excerpt in a book from the Houston Geneological Library about 35 years ago about two Whatley brothers who were half-Choctaw walking to the Little River area from Pearl River, Mississippi (Trail of Tears?). Does anyone know of a Whatley who lived or visited the Pearl River, Mississippi area? I'll dig those records out.

Appreciate anyone who has info and is willing to share!

Mariyn Wright

Thank you for your feedback! I believe my great grandmother was 1/4 Choctaw as she did receive something from the federal government. My mother has the original tin-type photo of the full-blood Choctaw grandmother. My grandmother, Mary Jane Whatley was said to have inherited land and cattle from her Whatley father. I did find a doc online where property was appraised and given to a Mary Jane Whatley, from a Elisha Whatley, but it was a little hard to figure out the relationships. The document was titled, "Elisha Whatley Estate".

It is possible that Jesse was a cousin instead of a brother. I will go back and check my records from 30 years ago!

My Scots-Irish grandfather, David Jeremiah King, was said to be from the Pearl River, MS area. Apparently, he was an orphan and came to Louisiana when he was a teenager.

My grandfather was quite the 'story-teller' and was even once featured in the Beaumont Enterprise for his tall tales of life in the early 1900's. His family lived in Alexandria, Pollock and Jena before moving to Grayburg, TX, and then finally to Sour Lake, TX.

I'd appreciate any more info you might be able to supply!

Thanks,
Marilyn Wright

Your note posted on ancestry.com is interesting to me. You are definitely part of this Louisiana Line of Whatleys who came from Wilkes County, Georgia. The first was William B. Whatley in abt. 1798 and the second was Phineas Whatley in 1806. They were either brothers or half brothers.
There were several Jesse dWhatleys in Catahoula Parish at one time or other. One was my great-uncle Jesse M. Whatley b. in 1872 and died in 1966. Lived his entire life in Catahoula Parish. Uncle Jess had a very faint beard.
The Mary Jane "Molly" Whatley will have to be researched in my materials. My uncle Jess was a a child of John Mercer Whatley (1839-1895) and Mary Ellen Dayton. Their children were:
Mary A.W. Whatley - b. 1867, Catahoula Parish
Julia Florence Whatley - b. 1869 and died in 1938
Jesse Mercer Whatley - b. 1872 and d. 1866.
Gilda R. Whatley - b. ? prob. died early in life.
Jane Harriet Whatley - b. 1880. d. ?
Alice Whatley - b. 1886 d. 1929. (my grandmother)

Mary A.W. m. a J. Tooley
Julia Florence Whatley m. Louis Spencer Stone.
Jesse M. m. Lillie Francis.
Gilda R. died early.
Jane Harriet m. Thomas M. White
Alice m. Earl Palmer Roark (my grandparents).

I'll look up what I have andd what the Whatley Line has on it.
We, or as some feel, some of us are part Choctaw or Chickasaw. The source came from Georgia where there were no Choctaw. There were Chickasaw near Augusta across the river in S. Carolina. Choctaw and Chickasaw basically speak the same dialects and can converse with one another.
Also, I'll look up David Walton King and see what I find. Both William B. and Phineas had several descendants in Catahoula Parish, as well as neighboring parishes with the same given names. This is confusing! I'll give it a try.
Doug Roark - (retired teacher/coach/admin. - West Texas)
dougroark@att.net
My great grandmother, Mary Jane (Molly) Whatley, was said to be part Choctaw. She had a brother named Jesse who didn't have to shave his face. She was able to get something from the government because of her Choctaw heritage later in her life. She gave birth to my grandfather in Opelousa, LA in about 1898. It has been said by older family members that her father was somewhat well to do with cattle and property. The family lived in LaSalle and Catahoula Parishes at different times in the mid-late 1800s until the early 1900s. She inherited property from her father and had her own cattle. She was married to a man named Stone and then in a much recounted story, Stone & David Jeremiah King, my great-grandfather, fought over her on the banks of the Little River. It was said that her husband, Stone, gambled away her cattle in a poker game and she had just given birth, but got out of bed and got her horses and men together and rounded up her herd. Later in the 1920s she had a hotel in Grayburg, TX. Grayburg had a railroad and was a logging town. I hope all my recollections are correct and would love to hear from anyone who has additional info. My grandfather's name was David Walton King. His brothers were Ben, Andrew, V.C. I believe there were a couple more that I just don't remember.

This is a reply to my own statement! After considerations and having re-read the will of Lucy Whatley (Mary Lucy Edwards) and all that it stated. I don't believe that Thomas Hobbs was Thomas Hobbs Whatley as some researchers have concluded. If Thomas was a Whatley, why would the will read Thomas Hobbs while Samuel was mentioned as Samuel Whatley and Phineas (Phineous as it states) Whatley. Samuel was considered a planter. Phineas and Thomas Hobbs were called yoemen. (Workers). There are two possibilities concerning Thomas Hobbs and his being left property by Lucy, an extension of her departed husband, William. Thomas Hobbs was either (1) the widower of the daughter of William and Lucy. (Have seen speculation that there was a daughter Lucy even though I felt the mom was made out to be a daughter of William, or (2) Both Thomas Hobbs and Amy Hobbs may have been orphaned and could have been the children of one of Mary Lucy Edwards' sisters. Lucy could have taken them to raise. Phineas was said to have married Amy Hobbs, but I've found no concrete evidence of this. Phineas had a large family of children, but it isn't a supported fact that his wife was an Amy Hobbs even though I'll support her existence as Phineas' wife until something else is proven.

Re: Whatley

I think I have found the J. Enoch Whatley's parents we have been searching for. In Jackson County Florida Marriage Books A & B 1848-1868 there is: Whatley, William B. to Nancy Sellers 12 Jan 1851.In the 1860 Census for Jackson County Fl. there is listed Shackelford, Edward 46 Farmer born in Al
Shackelford, Nancy 36 born in N.C.
Shackelford, Edward H. 3 months born in Fl
Whatley, William P. 8
Whatley, John E. 7
Whatley, Robert P. 5
Whatley, Wiley H. 3
However, the age for Nancy seems to be wrong since in 1850 she was only 18. I guess though the person transcribing may have mistaken the numbers on the original census record.
Just to let you know my maternal grandmother was Lola Whatley Hall.

Appears in the Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 5 June 1891...

Doubly Fatal Carelessness

Gainesville, Texas, June 1 - At Wortham a series of sad occurrences culminated last night. A few evenings ago the 7 year old son of B. F. Whatley, a prominent farmer, while carelessly throwing stones from a sling accidentally struck his 14 year old sister on the temple, producing concussion of the brain, casing death. A few hours afterward an older sister of the victim went into hysteries over the sad fate of her sister and last evening she died. The attending physician says her death was caused by intense grief.
