Classification: Query
Surnames: Wheatley, Johnson, Calhoun,
The first record I can find on James Wheatley is his purchase of land in 1787 Guilford County, North Carolina.

bstracts of Land Entries, Guilford County, North Carolina 1779-1796 and Rockingham County, North Carolina 1790-1795 by Dr. A. B. Pruitt

Entry: Guilford County, # 2574??? ( name illegilbe.) 30 apr 1787, James Wheatley enters 200 acres in Guilford County on waters of Horse Penn or Pinn Creek, border on North West of William Brittain's deeded land and THomas Thornbury's deeded land; includes improvement he lives on and improvement he formerly lived on.

I was given information regarding his known children:

Johnson Wheatley b. abt 1770 NC ( on 1800 Guilford Co, NC census)
Thomas Wheatley b. bef 1774 NC ( married and head of house on 1790 Guilford Co, NC census)
James Wheatley b. abt 1778 NC
Curtis Wheatley b. abt 1780 NC
Jesse Wheatley b. 1790 NC

I found further information on James Wheatley and found his will in Russell County, Virginia. It states:

So, there are more children than what I orginally thought and the dates I have at first are incorrect.

These are the children as follows: based on the will and family information:

Joseph Wheatley b. abt 1769 Delaware
Thomas Wheatley b. abt 1770
Leah Wheatley b. abt 1774
James Wheatley b. abt 1775
Curtis Wheatley b. abt 1776
Johnson Wheatley b. abt 1778
Abel Wheatley b. abt 1777
Richard Wheatley b. abt 1780
Jesse Wheatley b. abt 1781
Priscilla Wheatley b. aft 1781

I found further information that fit with my findings.

Joseph Wheatley married Sally or Sarah Reeves possibly in North Carolina before heading south to Georgia.

Thomas Wheatley was married by 1790. The only marriage record I can find on a Thomas Wheatley is to a Cressy Keressan in Ann Arundel, Maryland dated 10 Jul 1787. This could be the right Thomas and after his marriage headed south to Guilford County, NC in time to be recorded, with his father, on the 1790 census.

Leah Wheatley married Edward Owen 9 Jun 1794 Guilford County, NC.

James Wheatley married Mary Calhoun 25 Aug 1794. They are possibly cousins.

Johnson Wheatley married Hester Winrite 3 Nov 1798. Johnson's father was named on the certificate.

Jesse Wheatley was married before 1814. He had 2 daughters: Esther born abt 1814 and Mary born abt 1817. This is the information I have on Jesse and his girls:

e served during the War of 1812 in Capt. Little's Co A, 1st Militia. Jesse received bounty land Grant No. 6819 NE 1/2 of S 1/2 TS 24 R 26 E 1 Nov 1851 located in Jefferson County, AL for his service during the War of 1812.

J. Wheatley 1 male 50-60, 1 female 10-15, 2 females 15-20, 1 female 20-30, 1 female 40-50

By 1850, Jesse Wheatley moved from Georgia to Alabama because of his age and unable to care for his disabled daughter. He may have wrote to Esther Wheatley Malier in Georgia for her to come to Alabama. Ther is a Malier or Maleyer family in Georgia in 1850, by 1870 moved to Alabama where Jesse and daughter, Mary A wheatley, were living with Esther Malier. By 1880, se veral of the Malier children moved back to Georgia probably because they didn't like Alabama. Susan and Margaret Malier apparantly didn't marry. They appear with their brother Andrew on the 1880 Carroll County, Georgia Census.

Conclusions:

I think all of James and Elizabeth's children were born in either Maryland or Virginia, excluding Joseph. Joseph Wheatley was born in Delaware according to the 1850 census, I think, for the state of Georgia. I can't find James Wheatley after 1798 to 1810/1811. I don't know if he was recorded on the 1800 census. I think Leah and Edward Owen moved to the county north of Guilford and may be present on the 1800 census there. Some of James Wheatley's children followed him to Russell County, Virginia. Others went south to Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi.

Johnson could have been his mother's maiden name. I did find a Elizabeth Johnson born in the 1740s in the state of North Carolina. She could have been an aunt to Mary Calhoun, the wife of James Wheatley Jr. Still investigating on that.

My husband comes through Curtis Wheatley and Elizabeth Duley who were married 21 Sep 1796 Guilford County, NC. They had a son named Newton B. Wheatley who was born abt 1819 Georgia. He married Nancy Staggs. Their daughter, Elizabeth Wheatley, married William E Smith who was born abt 1839 in Alabama. This family settled in Tennessee. Some of their descendants could still be in Tennessee today.

James Wheatley could have been born abt 1745 either in Virginia or Maryland. I haven't found any confirmation of this. This is based on the information I've found. I haven't been able to find any record of James Wheatley in Virginia, nor a marriage record to Elizabeth. Any help would be greatly appreciated on this family and their descendants.
