(all connected)ancestors.
Believe family originated in VA, and some may have been among those who migrated to Nova Scotia and Canada in 1783.

Still struggling to find info on the WHEELDON AfricanAmerican surname------------surely, someone must have some info or slave records that can be shared to help in tracing my family ancestry.
Believe that my ggrandfather, WM LAWRENCE WEELDON, Black,
born in 1829 SC may have been the slave of SARAH WHEELDON/WHILDEN, but cannot find any further info.
Have been at this for 12yrs and have yet to hear from any
who claim to be kin.

Yes there is a Mary in my Tree but she lived and died in Nottinghamshire.
As you probably know, the Wheeldons originated in the Derbyshire /Staffordshire area [ every moorland village seems to have one or more Wheeldon families ] and they can be traced back to the earliest records [ the 1500s ]

Claire, I don't have much on this family and didn't have Thomas on record as one of the children of Joseph & Esther but I had Joseph (b:1811) & Martha (b:1821). I'm not as far as I know related to this line of Wheeldons but they are from the same area of Derbyshire as mine. I don't have Esther's surname either. I do have Joseph senior and his wife on the 1841 census;

Of Hartington, DBY. (Head). Aged 50. Ag. Labourer. b: DBY. (HO107/197/17/F6 p7). Esther Wheeldon. Aged 50. b:DBY. Hundred: Wirksworth. Also Esther Wheeldon, aged 12, b: DBY. Also John Wheeldon, aged 7, b: DBY. Also Elizabeth Brindley, aged 2, b: DBY. Also Joseph Wheeldon, aged 30, (Son), Male Servant, b: DBY.
Relationship to head not stated (possibly son)?

It appears Joseph Snr may have died in 1841 as there's a death recorded in the September Qtr for a Joseph Wheeldon at Ashbourne (Vol.19 p254). You'll need to verify this though. Also there's a possible death date for Esther in 1858 also at Ashbourne in the June Qtr Vol.7b p311) again it will need to be verified.

Joseph Wheeldon(b:1811) married Julia Elizabeth Brassington in the June Qtr of 1858 also in the Ashbourne area (this would include Hartington). (Vol.7b p707).

I have Joseph on a few census entries if you want more deatails. I hope that this is of some help.

My ggg Grandfather was Joseph Wheeldon born 1790 in Hartington Derby & married Esther (no maiden name)children included Thomas 1825 (my gg.grandfather) His parents I think were Joseph & Martha Wheeldon but unfortunately that is all I know. As far as I am aware Adelaide married Samual Johnson and had three sons, she was a school mistress at National School Shirland Derbyshire. However Samuel disappears from the census around 1861 and Adelaide remarries Herbert Tagg a local butcher and seemingly well known family.

As soon as I can sort my IT I will send you more detail but do you think we have a link and do you know any more of Samual Johnson?

My Great-Great Grandpa Arthur Wheeldon was from Radbourne, Derbyshire (1841); and I believe he was listed in the 1851 census of Diseworth, Derbyshire. According to one of his marriage license applications--he was married four times--his parents were Joseph Wheeldon and Anna Gill Thompson. Ross Wheeldon, a descendant of one of Arthur's brothers, has information on the family in England. Ross is the administrator of this Wheeldon message board (click on Links & Announcements). Arthur's nine children were named Eliza, Joseph, Charles, Adelaide, Frederick, Lewis, Sarah Jane, Thomas Jefferson, and Maggie.

Is this the same family you're connected with?

By the way, I arranged for the Civil War-style tombstone to be placed on Arthur's unmarked grave about a year ago. I can send you more information, if you're interested.

I understand long delays. I too sometimes take a long while to reply, when I get info overload and have to play catchup. I am pretty sure now that MARY WHEELDON's Parents or one parent at least was born in Canada or USA. This Family is a Huge Brick Wall for me. It is very frustrating as a Gt.Grandmother is quite a close relationship to get stuck on. I have gone quite a long way back with the HIND Family in Notts (Mainly Oxton) and have actually linked two separate HIND Families together. (Unrelated I think). But the WHEELDON's are frustrating me as I only have Mary to go on and her place of Birth SYDNEY, Nova Scotia, along with a daughter born HALIFAX, Nova Scotia. I have even found Mary and daughter on board a ship with Ticket Numbers, from Liverpool bound for Halifax NS. Probably to visit her Parents or other rellies. But no other details as yet. Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

There are a few dozen Mary Wheeldons from Nottinghamshire shown in the IGI, so without more info it will be difficult to identify " your " links.
I see that Thomas Hind was the son of John/Elizabeth Hind and that he had a brother and sister [ Henry and Pamela ]. The Hinds have been in Oxton since at least the early 1600s.

Hi Jerry, yes this is the same family. I've been in touch with Ross Wheeldon in the past as both our Wheeldon ancestors were from around the same area. My ancestors were only a couple of miles away from Radbourne and so I think there must be a link some where which as yet we've been unable to find. I would be interested in anything that you have on your gg grandfather Arthur Wheeldon. I know that the family moved to Diseworth in Leicestershire so I'll see if I can find him on the 1851 census. Hello Chip, I do have Millicent Wheeldon on my records with her parents Richard & Millicent and siblings but have no children for her and John Buxton as yet except George Buxton. She was baptized in 1709 at Hognaston, Derbyshire. Her brother John Wheeldon left a will in which he names George Buxton who was erased from his uncle's will for displeasing him. Best wishes

Jerry, I was interested to read about your 2X great grandfather Arthur Wheeldon. Do you know which part of Derbyshire he was from? I have an Arthur Wheeldon on my records from about the same date as yours born in Radbourne, Derbyshire. I have no further record of him after 1841. Hope you are well! I am slogging along! Jannine (the wife) has now qualified as a Nurse and is now working at the Hospital here in (not so) Sunny Scarborough.

I have to admit that my research has been put on the back burner recently as my Uni work is more important. I have not come across any mention on a teaching school at Castle Donnington. As my Dad is a HMI of Schools I'll ask him if their is any sources that may not be well known which could shed some light.

Found my connection! The first wife of Cornelius was Cynthia Ann Lee.

Melissa is listed as Mayssa on her death certificate and her mother is listed as Synthia, father C. Wheeldon born in KY.

Mayssa "Melissa" Wheelon born 12 May 1855 in Johnson Co., Indiana, m. John Wesley Brower, born 19 May 1849 in Cass Co., IN.

Children: (8 children, only James J. Brower survived; no names for all children)

1850 Census: Johnson County, Hensley Twp., Indiana. Cornelious is 36 years old, occupation - farmer, born in Kentucky. Wife is Cynthia A., age 34, born in Indiana.

I have come across your conversation re the Wheeldon's I think Adelaide Wheeldon (Joseph's daughter dob 1831) is my great (x3) grandfather's wife. His name is Samuel Johnson born abt 1836 however apart from the 1851 census he disappears - have an of you heard of him. If you want to chat re Adelaide let me know I live only 3 miles from where she taught and have details of her second husband and children.

Arthur Wheeldon (Union Vet) - info on burial

I am in the process of applying to the Department of Veteran's Affairs for a headstone for my Great-great grandfather Arthur Wheeldon, whom I believe to be buried in an unmarked grave in Clark Cemetery, White County, Indiana.

Arthur was born in Derbyshire, England in 1836, migrated to the U.S. in 1854, fought for the 95th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War, and died in Beaver Township, Pulaski County, Indiana in December of 1910. Based on information in his obituary I believe him to be buried next to his first wife in Clark Cemetery in northern White County, Indiana.

I would like to hear from anyone who has information that can confirm or refute my assumption on where he's buried.

Melissa was not the daughter of Elijah Wheeldon.
However, Elijah was in Indiana at the same time as Cornelius Wheeldon. I have been trying to determine if Cornelius & Elijah were brothers with no luck.
Elijah's children were: Nancy Ann, James William, Mathilda, Mahala, Commodore Perry, Abraham Thomas, Jasper, Theodore Freeling, Lydia Jane, & Susan Phoebe.

There seems to be a lot of similarities in that they were both born in Kentucky within a few years of each other, went to Indiana, and ended up in Iowa not too far from each other.
