Hi Jim, Hi Velma!

I'm interested in learning more about Israel Whelen's diary, since I'm a direct descendant. Which Israel wrote it, the father or the son? I believe that Israel Sr. at one time was paymaster at Valley Forge...not a job that kept him too busy, I'd imagine, as the army was practically bankrupt.

Clare

I have a handwritten diary, genelalogy of your husband's family. I was just about ready to send it off to auction. It has handwritten documents as well written by Israel Whelen. I don't know if you will get this message anytime soon...but let me know if you're interested in purchasing this...

Whelen, James S., Dennis, Israel, Elizabeth who married John Joseph Miller

Looking for information on these early Whelens in America. These are my husband's ancestors. Reportedly James S. Whelen married Sarah Elizabeth Dennis 29 May 1694 in NY. Their son Dennis Whelen married Sarah Thompson in 1749 and died in Chester Co. PA in 1782. Their son Israel Whelen was born 1752 in Philadelphia, married Mary Downing and died 21 Oct 1806 in Philadelphia, PA. Their daughter Elizabeth married Joseph John Miller and had a daughter, Anetta, married 11 Nov 1742 in Chester Co., PA to George Ashbridge Fairlamb.

I believe they were all Quaker. Israel was suspended from the Society of Friends during the revolution when he served as an "associator". He served as a commissioner and Financial
agent for the government in 1776. DAR files. The Miller family was also Quaker, descended from Gayen Miller. These families mostly all lived in Chester County. Downington, PA was named for an ancestor of Mary Downing.

I would like more information on the Whelen family and where they came from if possible.
