After her death in 1872(?) J.L. married Eudora on 15 Mar 1874. Any information would be helpful!
thanks,
mike

Jon, I had lost track of this posting and just the other day found it! I see that your Grandfather is the son of Ed and Stella. My Grandfather Willis, DID have a brother William, I had to ask Dad! My parents are from NE originally, and had lived in Grand Island and I have an Uncle (on my Mom's side who still lives in GI)and I have relatives on the Whetstone side that live in Columbus and St. Paul too! I think we could be related. I hope that you still view this site and we could connect! My email is jennywhetstone@comcast.net, and I would love to see if we could start connecting some dots! Take Care!

My line is through his son Isaac, Isaac Jr., Frank, Harry, Stanley Sr, and Stanley Jr. Most of them lived in Tamaqua, PA. I haven't heard of the names you listed.
REED and WHETSTONE

Looking for any information on John REED, born 1797 (PA) who married Susannah WHETSTONE, born 31 January 1801 (PA).
They were married in Stark County, Ohio on 9 January 1821. They migrated to Ottawa County, OH and can be found in the 1840 census in Bay Township, Ottawa, OH. Next they are found in Salem, Ottawa, Ohio in 1850 and 1860. John died 28 March 1863 and is burried in Union Cemetery, Oak Harbor, Ottawa, OH. Susannah died 14 October 1878 and is also burried in Union Cemetery, Oak Harbor.

I am trying to learn if their daughter Elizabeth REED, b. about 1832, married Calvin MCNUTT, Ottawa, OH. Everything points to that conclusion. The last time I "assumed," I ended up going down the wrong road and learned to use resources. I would really like to find something that states Elizabeth REED, daughter of John REED and Susannah WHETSTONE, married Calvin MCNUTT.

Another bit of information... The Elizabeth REED I am researching was married to George KINNEY before she married Calvin McNUTT.

Can anyone help!?!?!?!?!?

I would be very grateful....

Thank you!!!

Our Whetstone family arrived in Pennsylvania from Wurtemburg, Germany in the early 1700's. I believe that most of the Penn. Whetstones are of German descent! They used to spell it Wettstein or Wetzstein, but soon changed it to the English spelling. Many Germans left their country in the early 1700's. Perhaps some of the Whetstones went to England at that time and changed the spelling of their name.
But, I did some research on the Whetstone name and it is also an English surname. My Wetzsteins actually came from Switzerland originally!
Hope this helps some,
Karin Whetstone Culter

Sorry for being a bit late in replying...Just dusted off some old records and decided to restart my research brain. My g.grandfather was Jasper Whetstone. He was born in Allegheny Co., PA on 17 Nov. 1838 -- the following in the only family information I have:
F. Jacob B. born 26 Feb. 1805 Fayette Co. PA
M. Hannah Brown      born 17 Jan. 1804
S. Amand C.          born 16 Apr. 1846
S. Francis A.        born 8  Oct. 1849
D. Barbara E.        born 26 Dec. 1836
S. Franklin          born 28 Apr. 1839
D. Menerva           born 17 May  1831
Jasper fought in the Civil War with the 21st. Mo. Vol. [Union]. After the war he Married Grace E. C. Conn and resided in Keokuk, Iowa. I hope this information will be of help to you. My calculations are that your Jasper could well be my Jaspers grandfather. I would appreciate any information you have on this line of Whetstones.

Conn Whetstone
damprockw@earthlink.net
Ocala, Florida

I am a Whetstone from the UK. Outside of my family, I have never met another person called Whetstone and I am fascinated to see that there seem to be plenty of Whetstones living in the US! I saw that you trace your family back to JAcob Whetstone in 1777. Do you have any idea how Whetstones first arrived in the Colonies, who they were and where in the UK they came from? I would be really interested to hear...

I am trying to trace my line of Whetstone. They ultimately ended up in Wakulla County, Florida. I am desperately looking for a breakthrough past Adam Whetstone born in 1825 in South Carolina. He was married to a Sarah and had three sons, Henry M. Whetstone, Jacob Adam Whetstone, and Lewis I. Whetstone. I am having great difficulty finding any further information. It appears his mother was Racheal Whetstone born about 1800, but I cannot verify that for sure as of now.

My 5th Grandmother was Susannah (Eyman) Whetstone. Born about 1770 in Hampshire County, Virginia and Married Abraham Eyman April 27, 1792 Hardy County, Virginia and she died August 10, 1852 in Belleville, Illinois.
Some say her Father was George Whetstone, Sr and her mother was Susannah Stookey. It does make sense because Abraham Eyman refered to Uncle Jacob Stookey when he found him at the fort in Illinois. Don't know how much is true but any information on the George Whetstone, Sr would be appreciated.
Or who was the parents of Susannah? and what info does anyone have?????
David Jones

Re: Elizabeth WHETSTONE m Abraham Lewis BURGER Bedford Co Pa.

Christian Whetstone Burger was born in Morrisons Cove, Bedford County, PA on 1 July 1820. He was the son of Samuel Burger born October 24, 1792 and Susanna Whetstone, born January 29, 1798 in Bedford Co. PA. He married Sarah Brown who was born in Libertyville, Jefferson Co., IA on 16 Jun 1821. Sarah Brown married David Daniel Ridenour (born 1850) and the following children were born:

* Susie Ridenour
* Charles Ridenour
* Albert Ridenour
* Christian L Ridenour
* Amos R. Ridenour

At age 40, Christian Whetstone Burger was listed in the Bedford County tax records as a blacksmith. Ten years later, in 1870 he had moved to Des Moines, Iowa and was a farmer. Sam Burger came from Bedford Co. PA with his family and settled in Illinois in the latter part of 1843-44. It is likely that Abram Lewis Burger was born in Pennsylvania. His widow was assessed taxes in Woodbury Township in 1829, 1832, 1835 and apparently died before 1838.

The children of Samuel Burger are as follows:

o Jacob Burger
o Joseph Burger
o Christian Whetstone Burger
o Mary Burger Burger
o Susan Burger Burger

In the last years of Samuel Burger's life, he came to Jefferson Co to live with his son Christian Whetstone Burger. He died in Jefferson Co. on April 19, 1870 age 77 years, and is buried in the cemetery of the Libertyville Church of the Brethren. After he died in Iowa, Christian Whetstone became the administrator of his estate, and made several trips to Illinois settling up and distributing the property. The wife of Samuel Burger died in Raritan, Illinois.

Abraham (Abram) Lewis Burger, the brother of Samuel Burger, later came to Iowa and settled 4-5 miles NE of Eldon. From tax records of Bedford Co., we find Abram, who left Woodbury Township between 1844-1847. From the family we have it that Abram married Elizabeth (Betty) Wetzstein/Whetstone and had one boy named Joseph Burger. The family lived on the property near Eldon until Abram died, and some years after that in 1877, Joseph sold out and moved away to Kansas. (*Notes: Diary Galen Hunt)

Samuel Burger was the son of Abraham Lewis Burger, born 1766 in the American Colonies and Elizabeth Wettstein/Whetstone wife of Abraham Lewis Burger, was also born 1769-1733 in the American Colonies, possibly North Carolina.

Children of Elizabeth Wettstein/WHETSTONE and Abraham Lewis BURGER are: * i. Susanna Hefner BURGER was born 26 Apr 1791 in Bedford Co., PA, and died 27 Feb 1865 in Jefferson Co., IA. She married Abraham RITSCHY BET 1806 AND 1813. He was born 22 Jun 1781 in Loudoun Co., VA, and died BEF 19 Mar 1859 in Bedford Co., PA. She married John Shively Teeter 1807, son of Abraham Teeter, Sr. and Elizabeth Shively. He was born February 1782 in South Woodbury, Bedford County, PA, and died 5 August 1847 in Monroe Twp, Bedford County, PA. * ii.

I'm looking for some information on a Roxie McFann Whetstone. She married unknown Whetstone, this was her 3 rd marriage. She was also married to a Marion Humphrey and a John Harrison. She passed away at Wellston Nursing home as Roxie Whetstone on 11-20-1970. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have her death certificate but
it doesn't have her husband first name, says she a widow. This is a Grandmother I never knew and was told she lived in Jackson Ohio and sometimes in Oak Hill,Ohio. She was born in Lawerence county on 11-20-1906. I was wondering if she had children other than my mother.

I am trying to prove my lineage to Capt. Jacob Whetstone, married to Anna Maria Shaffer. I am having a problem with knowing who his son Isaac married.....Pass Huntzinger or Magdalena Kepner? All of my research says that it was Magdalena (Molly), but when I tried to register for DAR, they said that all of the records of the people who proved that Capt. Jacob was their patriot said that Isaac married Pass Huntzinger. I am beginning to think that there were many Jacob Whetstones!!

I hate to see the "three brothers tale" given here. There was one Swiss immigrant, not brothers. Three descendants of the original settler removed to Alabama. I published on these cousins who removed to Alabama. They were very distant cousins.

I wish people would show responsibility before publishing unsubstantiated tales on the web. The three brothers tale is greatly overworked. All over the south comes the tale of "three brothers" coming from "somewhere" and going in different directions.

G. W. Whetstone commits suicide

Appears in the Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 17 June 1892 ...

A Sickening Tragedy

Belden, Texas, June 9 - A sad bloody tragedy happened at Bryant's Mills in Cass County yesterday. G. W. Whetstone, a business man of that place, in a fit of derangement attempted to kill his only children, a lovely little boy and girl. The instrument used was a hatchet and he inflicted ghastly wounds on the heads of both children and after his bloody work, ended his own life with a pistol shot through the heart.

The only reason known for the act was left by him in a note to his wife in which he said he had no hopes of ever being successful in life, and did not want to remain on earth. He desired that his effects might be divided between his children if they recovered. His little girl was 4 years old,and the boy 18 months. he has many relatives and friends in this place and much sympathy is expressed.
Good morning, Skyler. I just saw your post yesterday and wondered if you ever had any responses. My family lived next door to your grandparents in Greenville, and my mother and my older brother remember them well. Your grandfather was quite the legend in Greenville, Alabama back in the 1950's. As the head football coach, he led the GHS Tigers to many successful seasons.

And yes, your uncle John David an attorney in Baldwin County, Alabama. However, he served as the highly-respected District Attorney in that county for many years, retiring from the elected position just a few years ago.

If you'd like more info, please contact me and I'll put you in touch with my mother and brother.

Sandy Stamm
