I am afraid I can't give you any specific information about you Whipkey/Lanning connection, however these two families have been inter-related since before 1850. Samuel Whipkey married Sarah Lanning some time in the early 1840's. Jacob Hoop, the son of David Hoop and Elizabeth Whipkey Hoop, married Nancy Lanning in 1850 in Upper Turkeyfoot Twp., Somerset. Jacob passed away in 1851. Nancy's parents were Peter and Elizabeth Lanning. Peter was born in New Jersey around 1799.
Don

How Hilda and Andrew Whipkey of Pittsburgh are connected to Harry Edward Lanning?

I am trying to find out why a Hilda Whipkey(married name)of Pittsburgh, Pa. had passed along to her grandkids two 1915-1920 photo albums of my grandfather Harry Edward Lanning. These photo albums were carefully kept in this Whipkey family for close to sixty years. The grandson of Hilda and the grandson's wife were good enough to keep these treasured albums without knowing anything about the Lanning family. By chance they were able to connect the albums to my brother, Livingston James Lanning in St. Louis. My brother and I were thrilled to see photos of our parents, grandfather and great uncles (J. Frank and Charles Stearns Lanning). We never knew our grandfather and had never seen pictures of him. The mystery we are trying to discover is where the connection is between Hilda and Andrew Whipkey and Harry E. and Lucille (Jewett) Lanning. Were they related, close friends, co-workers? I would appreciate if anyone has any info that might be helpful.

I don't know if you know that gradmama(Bertha) died June 2006 and Mom's sister Lois Jean died in August 2007. I have some questions but am getting ready to go back to work. so I will get in touch with you later. Thank you

My grandfather, Earl E. Whipkey, died in Bobtown, Pa when I was a year old in 1963 of a heart valve problem. My grandmother, Dorothy died of Cancer.

Mark E. Whipkey is married to Maria Elena Colmenares Whipkey and has three sons, Jonathan, David and Bryan. But i think that earl S. and Ira C. were the twins the tombstone at the cemetery give the same year of birth. I think #7 and #15 are mixed up. I think number 7 is just McClelland Whipkey and number 15 is Henry McClelland. #7 information matches the information on the headstone at cemetery. I will check into that futher. I will send for the militry records for Samuel. Thanks again

Christina

Christina,
Thank you for your reply and the information.
You provided some detail I did not previously know.
RE: your message, Yes, Sarah Whipkey, buried at Normalville is Sarah Lanning, w/o Samuel Whipkey.
Samuel, also buried there, is his wife. Samuel is the S/O George Whipkey and May Catherine Jordan, who was the S/O Johann Jacob, the original Whipkey in this country.

I show Earl S. is the twin of Lottie Belle, born 3/21`/1898. Lottie Belle married John Basinger and they had four children.
I show Ira Clay Whipkey was born 12/8/1895 and died July, 1970.
Olive was born 3/25/1901 and married Ray Stone.

Earl E.

I may be a quasi-expert on this particular question.
Noah Whipkey, who married Elizabeth Neal Black, was the son of my 3G grandfather, John. Their daughter Hannah Whipkey, married William Lohr, who was the s/o Peter Lohr and Sophia Murray, both of whom are my blood 2 g grandparents, from different lines, On the paternal side, my great-grandmother was Lydia Lohr, her Mother was Sophia Murray.
I show Hannah Whipkey and William Lohr had several children, one of which was Lula, who married James Thomas Cook. They had 12 children and I assume you come from one of them, but I have little info on this line, would love to see how you connect to the family tree.
When you go back to John Whipkey, he was father of my GG grandfather, David G. Whipkey.
Hope to hear from you and fill in some blanks on this line.
Jim Whipkey

Jim you seem to be the expert on John Whipkeys. The John Whipkey that I am looking for was born in 1799 and died in 1874. He married Margaret Rebecca Gary. Their son that I descended from was Noah Whipkey born in 1836(9) and died in 1925. Any information that you can give me about this family line would be much appreciated.

I am also a descendant of Hannah Whipkey. My brother and I did some research about five years ago and this is what we found. Hannah's father was Noah Whipkey b. 1836(9) and d. 1925 and mother was Elizabeth Neal Black. Hannah's grandparents on the Whipkey side were John Whipkey b. 1799 and d. 1874 and Margaret Rebecca Gary b. 1800 and d. 1843. I do not have any further specifics at this time. I will have to discuss it with my brother and see what we can remember. I hope this helps.

I can add a little to this thread. Hannah Wyer had 8 children by Albert Ross Whipkey. They never married. All her children went by Wyer. Albert Ross Whipkey was married to Ida Mae Church and they had 9 children. My data base shows Hannah had brothers William and Allison, their parents were JSames C. Wyer and Susan S. One of Hannah's sons Leon died 3/11/08.
I have most of the info on the Whipkey line from Albert Ross Whipkey back and be glad to share anything I have.
Jim Whipkey

Maria,
This is my direct line, David Whipkey and Susannah Dull were my 5g grandparents.

I have a lot of information on the line, but there are a lot of holes too.
My info shows Brady Burl Whipkey had at least 8 children by 3 different women.
My info shows Brady and Edith Ritchea had a son Roger Dean and he and Lena Kathy Hardman had a daughter I have listed as Lena Marie. Is this you?
My info is nearly complete back from Brady Burl and many of his ancestors, bkut I don't know a lot about the children of Brady and his wives. Anything you can add would be helpful and I'll be glad to share with you any info I have.
Jim Whipkey

My g-g-g-grandmother, Sarah (Rumble) Boone, married in 1902 her second husband, George Whipkey. Sarah is apparently the third wife of George, with his first wife dying in July 1887, his second marriage ending in divorce in December 1900.

Is this the same George Whipkey who was married first to Catherine (unknown) and had children Ann about 1859, Mary about 1862, Cyrus in 1865 and Daniel in 1866?

Also, Hulda Ann Whipkey born March 1859 married Harrison Boone, son of Sarah Rumble Boone. How does Hulda fit in with the other Whipkey's in the area?

Could this Hulda Ann Whipkey be one and the same as Ann Whipkey, daughter of George - making George father and step-father-in-law of Hulda and making Sarah mother and step-mother-in-law of Harrison?

I have a fair amount of information on George Whipkey and his family that I will share that I have put together tryign to confirm if he is or is not the same George that married my g-g-g-grandmother.

My Grandfather's name was John A Wyer he was a brother to Hannah Wyer. According to my mother a Ray Wyer lived with them in Youngstown when she was a child. I have a picture of Sarah Susan Wyer with 6 of her children but don't know the names of the children in the picture. My mother says that my Grandmother talked about his sister Hannah and said she had never married. She said they had visited WV and stayed with an Allison Wyer and his wife. She said she believes he was a brother to Hannah and John and his nickname was pinkie.

Whipkeys in Iowa

Some of the children of Abraham WHIPKEY (b. abt 1815 in PA, d. 1905 in Black Hawk Co., IA) and Mary SPOHR (b. abt 1812 in PA and d. 1897 in Black Hawk Co., IA) remained in Iowa. Descendants can still be found here. I'm one of them.

This Abraham has been frequently confused by online posters with another Abraham WHIPKEY who married a Friedline. Not the same person.

The Iowa Abraham WHIPKEY was the son of John WHIPKEY (b. abt 1795 and d. after the 1870 census in which he & wife Elizabeth_____ were in Black Hawk Co, IA, living with son Abraham and his wife Mary (SPOHR) WHIPKEY.)

Also, the Iowa Abraham WHIPKEY should not to be confused with his grandfather Abraham WHIPKEY (b. Feb 1771 & d. 30 May 1820 in Somerset Co, PA.)

It would have certainly helped if all of those people (meaning ancestors in general) had chosed UNIQUE names for their children - what were they thinking?!?

I guess back in January I responded directly to Jim & not to the message board.

To clarify: my basis for claiming that the Abraham WHIPKEY, who died in Black Hawk Co. IA in 1905, was the son of John WHIPKEY (b. abt 1795) and Elizabeth____(b. abt 1798) includes:

1870 Black Hawk Co., Iowa, census. John & Elizabeth were in Abraham & Mary (Spohr)'s household.

1900 Black Hawk Co. marriage license to Julian Rhodes. Abraham stated it was his second marriage. He also stated that his parents were "John WHIPKEY" and "Elizabeth___." Elizabeth's surname isn't too clear. However, it looks to me as being perhaps "Wallis" - when comparing the other "S"s and the "W"s on the page.

John & Elizabeth were not found in the 1880 census in Black Hawk Co., IA. They had possibly died by then, although they may not have died in Black Hawk Co. IA. I've checked the Orange Twp. cemetery. No burial records there for either John or Elizabeth WHIPKEY.

Your not going to belive this but you are e-mailing aunt Bonnie's oldest daughter. How are you? It is good to here from you. How is aunt Frannie? Mom is doing alittle better since daddy's death....it's been pretty hard on the family. I started researching our line cause mom said that she didn't know too much about the whipkey line...i have found some information. i have found Earl S. and Eva (Brooks) Whipkey marriage license. I also found a newspaper article i belive is dated in 1937 where grandme and grandpap went to a fourth of july reunion and it mentions that they had on child attending, which would almost have to be your dad. i have a few obit. some wills. i looks like the Whipkeys lead a very private life. I am obtaining a service record for a Samuel Whipkey (third great grandfather) , who fought in civil war. He was wounded ijn Williamsburg, and was discharged. Here is my home e-mail would be gald to give you any inforamtion you want.

trident3ccc@wmconnect.com

Take Care,
Christina
