This may not help, but worth a shot,
1920 census for Vt. Windsor County. Windsor Dist 15, image 24. lists the family of Horace N? Whipple 45, and wife Ruth 33, eldest child Winnifred M. son age 9 , did not see him on the 1930. On the Social Seurity Death Index, is a Winfred I Whipple b 7 May 1910, died 2 Apr 1998 San Bernadino County CA, his card issued in Vermont. Since there are errors on the census records, the middle initial could be wrong. If this seems to make a little sense to your information, perhaps more could be found.
Howard Boswell

Winiford Whipple is the man listed as my grandmother's father on her birth certificate. She has no memory of him because she was so young when she last saw him. She was born in White River Junction, Vermont. He was married to her mother Nellie Zwicker, for what appears to be a very short time. My grandmother would really like to find him or at least his family. He may have stayed in Vermont or may also have gone to California.

Yes, I am looking for Barneville or Barnville who's daughter married Thomas Elmer Mosher 16 Jan 1814 and had 11 children, one of which was Ephraim P. Mosher, who was the father of Thomas Samuel Mosher who was the father of Claude Francis Mosher, the father of Thelma Ruth Mosher, who married George Fordyce Waldo and had Ruth Emma Waldo, my wife. Trying to develop the Whipple family, as there are also direct desendants on the Waldo side in the 1600's. I would like to see how they are related.
Thank you
Allen D.
Hi Sharon,

We believe my wife is the GG granddaughter of Stephen Whipple. General information passed down from relatives is that he was involved in indian wars in the 1800's. Her grandfather was Elmer Whipple and the family is from Eureka. We do not have much information on the Whipple family except what we see on the internet. Could you share your information and I have scanned a 56 page letter Elmer Whipple wrote to his mother about his adventures in Nome, Alaska during the 1900 gold rush that I could share with you. From what I have learned your gg grandfather was H.E. Whipple ??

Randy in Lodi, CA

I agree with the handwriting problem. My source for "Linnie Ella" was a typed record (Stanislaus County, California, Early Marriages, 1854-1905), though of course that alone doesn't prove the spelling.

One of George Wright's sons provided me with the name "Edna". As you noted, she is living with her grandmother (Thankful) and father in 1910. I too am unable to find Harold beyond the 1900 census, nor Linnie/Lima. Edna is living with her aunt (George's sister, Mary WARD) in 1920. George died around 1931 and his two boys from his second wife were adopted by the widow's second husband shortly after.

I'm unaware of California divorce records, but plan to do a little more research on the subject. I suspect they were divorced either in Fresno or Stanislaus Co, CA.
Thanks again.

One of the other things I've found in my research is Nathan WHIPPLE being enumerated in the 1870 and 1880 Censuses in Conneault, Erie County, PA.

In the 1870 Census, 70-year-old Nathan WHIPPLE is enumerated with 63-year-old Martha WHIPPLE, 37-year-old Charles S. WHIPPLE, and 10-year-old Edith WHIPPLE. Also living with them is 10-year-old John WINTERS, relationship unknown. Edith and John are born in PA; the rest in NY.

In the 1880 Census, widowed 80-year-old Nathan WHIPPLE is the head of house and living with him are his 38-year-old daughter Martha (WHIPPLE) TURNER and his grandchildren 21-year-old Charles TURNER, 12-year-old John TURNER, and 10-year-old Martha TURNER. Nathan and his daughter are born in NY and the grandchildren in PA.

This isn't my direct line, but from the Whipple website information supplied by Weldon, Nathan WHIPPLE was the brother of my ggg-grandfather Ithamar WHIPPLE.

It isn't surprising finding them in Erie County, PA, since many of descendants of my gggg-grandparents Benjamin and Silence (BUNDY) WHIPPLE can be found in Erie and neighboring Crawford counties, PA.

I just found another (secondary) source that gives Martha's maiden name as O'Connor:

Blaine Whipple, 15 Generations of Whipples: Descendants of Matthew Whipple of Ipswich, Massachusetts, Abt 1590-1647: An American Story (Baltimore, MD: Gateway Press, 2007), 2:G409.

His sources are well documented. His information source is Henry Burdette Whipple (the same source as I mentioned earlier).

I think I still prefer her name as McConnell. Please help me feel good about changing her maiden name in the WhippleGenWeb! (If you don't, I might change it anyway ... :-)

Weldon

(I'll try not to make any typos):

"NATHAN WHIPPLE (Benjamin-7, Benjamin-6, Francis-5, Jonathan-4, Joseph-3, Matthew-2, Matthew-1), born April 12, 1800; died December 1, 1878; married MARTHA O'CONNOR, born April 30, 1806; died September 10, 1878."

It then lists 8 children: Nathan, William, Jonathan, Milden, Charles S., Joseph B., Elizabeth, Martha Ann.

I can imagine someone confusing McConnell and O'Connor. Both have "Conn" in the middle; Mc and O' are similar kinds of prefixes, and I can see suffixes involving L's and R's being confused.

One other thing: In the H.B. Whipple book (after listing the 8 children), the author states the following:

"The following children and grandchildren of Nathan Whipple (Benjamin-7, etc.) were noted in a handwritten manuscript chart prepared by Anne W. Foster and sent to Mrs. Irwin C. Krueger of Erie, Pennsylvania. No dates or spouses were included."

He then lists children of Nathan D.'s children Nathan, William, Jonathan, Charles S. and Joseph B.

As I re-read your reply to my reply, it seems quite feasible that your information is probably more likely to be accurate than mine--especially where you have Martha's parents identified--complete with surnames.

As I have written this post, I think I have convinced myself that I like your information about Martha better than H.B. Whipple's.

If you concur, I feel inclined to modify what is in the WhippleGenWeb.

Thanks again for your posts!

Weldon Whipple, Webmaster, Whipple Website
weldon@whipple.org

As I mentioned in my first response, my "evidence" appears at the bottom of each page. Feel free to visit the URLs I gave in that post. Specifically, visit Martha's page and scroll to the bottom.

I admit that my sources aren't always the best, but they are there. If you find other, more convincing, sources, please free to send them to me.

Good luck!

Weldon Whipple

Thank you for sharing that information. Do you have evidence to support that her maiden name was O'Connor?

Passed down through our family is information concerning the children of my fourth grandfather, William Alexander McConnell; his daughter Martha is said to have married a Nathan Whipple. Everything I have on this family is sketchy, at best, except that of my third great-grandfather, Alexander Joseph McConnell.

Martha is thought to have been born about 1807, probably in Seneca county, NY. Alexander was most likely born in Junius township, Seneca, NY where his father is found in the 1810 census. There is a good chance that his sister Martha was also born there.

Martha McConnell is one of the oldest children of William and Elizabeth Van Sickle McConnell. William was born in Northumberland, PA; his parents were living in Turbut in the late 1790s when they left for Cayuga county, NY. They settled first in the town of Washington, Cayuga, NY which became Fayette, Seneca county, NY on 14 March 1800.

By 1820, William's father has died and the rest of the family moved westward; William settled in Prattsburg, Steuben, NY. Unfortunately, few records from this area have survived.

However, the 1830 census has a Nathan D. Whipple living in Prattsburg with a wife and three small boys. This could just be a coincidence.

I know this is a shot in the dark, but most of what my family recorded turned out to be at least partially true and I thought I'd try to track it. Sorry for being so vague.

Kathy McConnell Hudson
Kailua, Hawaii

Nathan D. Whipple, 1800 NY - 1881 (?) PA

Nathan (b. abt 1800, NY) and his wife Martha (b. abt 1807, NY) are found in Castile, Wyoming, NY in the 1850 census. With them are Charles S., age 17, Joseph, age 14, Elizabeth, age 12 and Martha A., age 9.

In 1870, they're in Conneaut, Erie, PA where it appears they spent their last years. Charles S. Whipple, age 37, is living with them.

By 1880, Martha has died and Nathan, widower and retired farmer, shares his home with daughter Martha Turner, now 38, and children Charles, age 21, John, age 12 and Martha, age 10, all surnamed Turner.

I'm looking for Nathan's wife's surname and the date and location of their marriage. Any clues would be greatly appreciated.

Kathy
Kailua, Hawaii

Weldon,

Did Henry Burdette Whipple provide a source for Martha's maiden name? Is there any indication as to how he arrived at O'Connor? Did Blaine Whipple merely copy the info from Henry Burdette Whipple? This is often the case in family studies published in the last decade or so; the information on recent descendants may be new and/or updated, but the earlier info is just copied as first written. As a librarian in a genealogy library, I see a lot of that.

Since this is not a direct line of mine, I'm doing this just to tie up loose ends. However, if I needed definite proof, I would send for the death certificate of one or more of her children. I'm more familiar with NY records than those of PA, but I would inquire as to whether or not the town clerk in Conneaut has these records, like they would in most small towns in NY. (Their website indicates that they have some early obituaries.)

Someone may be a direct descendant and interested enough to spend the time and money to do this. Older records are usually inexpensive.

In the meantime, I think a note attached to Martha stating that her maiden name MAY be McConnell would be meaningful, especially if the database is updated from time to time. If it turns out that she is a McConnell, I'd be happy to provide information going back a few more generations.

Thanks for getting back to me.

Aloha,

Kathy McConnell Hudson
Kailua, Hawaii

Alfred Whipple, Jr.

25 August 1959 Tonawanda News
Help Comes Too Late For 2 Trapped on Mountain Ledge
Franconia, N. H. (UPI) – Daring mountain climbers planned to try today to retrieve from a wind-lashed mountainside the bodies of two Connecticut youths who died late Monday just as rescuers reached them.
“Don’t let us die; for God’s sake help us,” one cried as the team of crack rock climbers inched to within a few feet of the narrow ledge where the pair had been trapped for over 24 hours. They died apparently of exposure.
In a final effort, three rescuers, hanging from steel pins hammered into the rain-slicked granite face of Profile Mountain, formed a human ladder so that two lower men could clamber up the ropes and over their shoulders to reach the ledge.
Though the risky attempt succeeded, it was too late. One boy writhed in delirium on the ledge, roped to his already dead companion. He died minutes later after rescuers had dressed him in warm clothes and began the task of lowering him down the mountain.
The victims, both college students, were Alfred Whipple Jr., 20, of Gales Ferry, Conn., a sophomore at Brown University, and Sidney Crouch, 21, of Ledyard, Conn., a student at the Export (Pa.) Bible Institute.
Ironically, the means by which the youths might have saved themselves, dangled from a rock just 10 feet away – but well out of reach. Their knapsack, filled with food and warm clothing, had slipped from one boy’s grasp. Its strap caught on a rocky spur below them.
The eight-man rescue team, expert climbers who were members of the Appalachian Mountain Club, scaled the slippery face of the rocky mountain in 50-mile-an-hour winds, drifting fog and rain.

26 August 1959 Tonawanda News
Bodies of 2 Are Recovered From Ledge
Franconia, N. H. (UPI) – Four expert mountain climbers narrowly escaped death while recovering the bodies of two young college students from a ledge on the sheer face of Profile Mountain on Tuesday.
A seven-man team of rock climbers toiled for nine hours on the rugged mountain before completing their job. About 5,000 persons watched.
At various times, four of the climbers brushed death. One man dangled from his nylon rope 500 feet above the ground and was saved only by the strength of his companions.
Brought down were the bodies of Alfred Whipple Jr., 20, of Gales Ferry, Conn., and Sydney Crouch, 21, of Ledyard, Conn., who scaled the mountain Sunday and became trapped on a ledge near the famed “old man of the mountain” a New Hampshire landmark.
For a short biography I am writing on Capt Paul Whipple, I would appreciate hearing from anyone that might have letters, passed-on recollections, documents, pictures, etc. relating to Capt. Paul Whipple, 7th New Hampshire Volunteers and veteran of the Battles of Fort Wagner and Fort Fisher, who was born 1840 in New Boston, NH and died 1915 in Darlington, S.C.
I have a few good things, such as the Regimental History of the 7th and even a New York Times article quoting Paul after the wreck of a train in NH. Also, the 1880 census sheets for Darlington. However, I hope that there might be more out there. I will be happy to coordinate having copies made of whatever materials you might want to share.
Here is a small entry from the Granite Monthly, Vol. XXII, 1897:
Captain Paul Whipple, brother of J. R. and J. B. Whipple, who was born here in 1840, is another man eminent in another line. At twenty-one years of age he enlisted in Company K, Seventh New Hampshire Volunteers, served throughout the war, and was discharged captain in August, 1865. He at once returned south to Darlington, S. C, and with the aid of several hundred colored hands, men, women, and children, he cultivated his own plantation of 5,000 acres. On his estate are fifty cabins, a church, and school-house, for his help, for whom he supports a teacher and pastor. He has won the love of the Southerners who at first
were his bitterest foes, and has been honored by them with public office.

Thanks in advance for any help or materials you might provide!

I purchased a 'Whipple Cook Book" on ebay in hopes that it might have information about my Whipple's ( my Whipple's are from MI, Ohio, and CA) but the Whipple's in this book are from Iowa. There are several photos of Whipple's one of Alfred J. Whipple. Mary May and Milo Doak Whipple,Wayne Buchanan whipple and Addie Juanita Rill,Warren Bentizinger and Clarice Audrey Whipple,Harald Nathaniel Christensen and Helen May Whipple.Mary and Milo Whipple. Also a photo of the Whipple house in Agency, Wapello County, Iowa.
I will be happy to make copies of the photos if anyone is interested.
Sharon
Madera, CA

Stephen G. Whipple is my G G Uncle. I have completed a tremendous amount of research on the Whipple family tree but have not seen anything about Stephen Whipple adopting a Native American girl. I do think that Stephen was the father of a Native American child. Somewhere in my papers I have the name of the child and also the childs mother. To the best of my knowledge Stephen did not marry the childs mother but the child did take the Whipple name.
I will be happy to share any information that I have.
Sharon
Madera, CA

Thank you very much for your reply! It is very exciting to connect with a Whipple family member. I work for two Humboldt County agencies, the Clarke Historical Museum and the Wiyot Tribe. Whipple was, as you are undoubtedly already aware, a very important man, any information I can gather on him would be an invaluable resource for both the museum/Tribe, but more importantly, for the County as a whole. I have contacted both the Historical Society and Fort Humboldt, yet their archives are sorely lacking when it comes to information on Whipple. Please contact me at the Clarke Museum so we can better discuss this topic, our email is clarkehistorical@att.net and our telephone # 707-443-1947 (I prefer the email as I am only part-time).

Sincerely,

Ben Brown
Clarke Historical Museum/Wiyot Tribe
Registrar

Re: Addison Whipple

My name is Annette Strickland Adams. I am Kathleen Whipple's oldest daughter. I was looking for Uncle Addison and saw your posting. The last time I saw him was the end of 1956 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He and his family of four where there one day, and gone the next. We never saw or heard from him again. In 1979 his brother Clyde came to Pennsylvania where I then lived, looking for him. No one in the family had heard from Addison since that time, and Clyde went to his grave not knowing his whereabouts. I would like to know who you are. Please contact me. Thank you!

Whipple, Keech, Barber & Yorton Connections

I am working on a file for Jacon Yorton who was born about 1819 and I think he was a son of Paul Yorton and Hannah Markle. I think I have seen two Jacob's born about same time.

This Jacob that I am working on was married three times and had eight children from first marriage, three from second and one from third marriage.

First wife was Lydia Maria Keech daughter of 1794 James Keech (do not confuse him with 1796 James Keech son of 1763 James, they both lived in Oneida County, NYS) and his first wife Patience DROWN.

Second wife was Mary M. (most likely) BARBER, daughter of Russell BARBER and Patience Keech ( a sister to 1794 James Keech)and therefore a first cousin to Lydia.

Third wife was Catherine Keech a half sister to Jacob's first wife Lydia Keech, she was d/of 1794 James Keech and James' second wife Mary Jane Raymond. Catherine was first married to George YOUNGS, by whom she had five children. She and Jacob Yorton had one son that I know of- Burton Homer Yorton born about 1880. Burton married a cousin, Stella Rose Yorton, daughter of Albert K. Yorton and Emily Jane Whipple- Emily is also a BARBER and Keech descendent.

Anyone interested in more info, please post here or contact me directly, and if anyone HAS more info for me on these individuals/families, please let me know.

Thanks from Nora
