Surnames: WHISTLER, GANN, LANE, BISHOP
My ggrandfather James M. (Mathew or Madison?) WHISTLER, was born in 1854 in TX, probably Titus County. He married Millie F. LANE in 1877. Millie was born in Hopkins County, TX in 1858. Their children were Lucy Ellen, born 1879; Annie Jane, 1882; Mattie, 1884; Phoebe, 1886; and James Elias, 1888. All seem to have been born in Rockwall County, TX. The story is that James M. died in 1889 while chasing a runaway horse.
For years our family history has linked us with John WHISTLER and Anna BISHOP, but I have not been able to prove the connection. Instead I think our James M. may have been the son of Elias WHISTLER, born 1812 in VA, and Anna J. GANN , 1818, TN. Dates, locations, and similar family names shown on censuses indicate this is a strong possibility. Does anyone know anything about the James M. listed as a child of Elias and Anna on the 1860 and 1870 censuses?
