Re: Jabez Whitaker

No I don't believe that Wm whitaker got sick for a year and was demoted. But I do believe that between the period of March 10, 1655 ( the point at which he is refered to as a Lt Col) and the end of the Grand Assembley on December 31, 1656 ( where he is referred to as a Captain) there was a major change in the makeup of the Burgesses between 1654/1655 and 1655/56-1656. The members of the committee for Private Causes on March 24,1655 ( he is listed as a LT Col) and the members as of December 1, 1656 ( when he is a captain) are all Burgesses for the 1655/56/1656 Assembly. Other than Wyatt and Whitaker all of the members are different as of 12/1/1656 I guess that Major Richard Whitaker got sick and was demoted also because in 1680 he is a Major and in 1682 he is a Captain.

I did recheck all of the Barbados Wills and Administration Records and there is nothing that gives the age of Jabez as you had previously indicated.

I wish you had kept your research records, because as you know without sources it is very difficult to verify genealogy research of others. Thanks for all of your help.
Bill,
Let me give you a little orientation. I researched the Whitakers several years ago; my maternal g.mother was a Va. Whitaker. I am now retired and gave most of my records to the Library of Va. (So far as I know, they are still sitting in a storage room.) So I am working with skeleton records and off the top of my head...
I researched the Mr. Whitakers who is on the Va. Company records 1623-1626. The records indicated that he was from Charles City Co., and one record gave his name as William. Don't know who he was, but he seemed to be a gentlemen and unmarried. Yes, there was a Thomas Hobson who supposedly stole his property... Sorry, I see no connection to Alexander Whitaker...
Re the Ikens - Ann Whitaker, emigr. 1636, possibly sister of LtCol Wm., m. Thos. Harwood; her dau. Grace Harwood m. Thos. Iken...
Wm. Whitaker of Eliz. City is on record as managing abandoned land 1669. Most Eliz. City records were destroyed, but a will index shows that he left a will in 1695...
Wm. Whitaker b.c. 1615 was named as Lt. Col. or Mr. He disappears from the J.C. Burgess records in 1656. In 1658, a Capt. Wm. Whitaker appears as Burgess. Do you think he was sick for a year and then demoted?
Cary A.

  Thanks for your response.

Please tell me more about Wm Whittaker of Charles City who died 1623. Is he the one that is mentioned in the answers of George Yeardly to the charges against him by Capt. John Martin.Where it is said that a Thomas Hobson was like a child and son to him. The answers are dated February 4, 1624/5. If so he is not listed as Wm Whittaker, but as Mr Whittaker. The only place I have seen him listed as Wm Whittaker is in the William & Mary Quarterly V 21 page 138 and V 23 page 186. To see the complete Answers see the Records of the Virginia Company Volume 4 page 510. These records are on line and can be found at " Thomas Jefferson Papers. It begins at image 542. They can also be found in the Virginia Historical Magazine V 7 page 137 etc.
The Mr Whitaker that is being refered to has to be Alexander Whitaker who drowned between the spring of 1616 and June of 1617. This is because George Yeardly indicates that at the time he was Deputy Governor. ( he was for the period 1616/1617). He then states that by the time Mr Whitakers sister came over Sir Samuell Argall had succeeded him. Argall became Deputy Governor in 1617. We know that Alexander Whitaker did not die intestate, but left a will. This is being answered by Yeardly 7 to 8 years later. Could have been transcribed wrong. The time frame fits perfectly.

Regarding your Wm Whitaker of Elizabeth City who you indicate was sponsored by the Ikens. The land patent of May 14, 1669 to Thomas Iken contributes the land rights for the transportation of Wm Whitaker to Mr Edward Griffith the late husband of Mr Ikens wife Elizabeth. There is no indication when the transportation took place, except before May 14, 1669. I obtained a copy of the original land patent and it is not clear if the name is Wm Whitaker, but it could be. You indicate that the Ikens of Warwick were friends of the Whitakers. Do you have a source for that info? Also what is your source for this Wm Whitaker to be of Elizabeth City and die 1695?

I do believe that the William Whitaker who is a member of the Burgess between 1649 and 1658/59 is the same person. However I have written enough for now, will address it later with another message.

Looking forward to your reply, Thanks Bill

Bill,
The four Wm. Whitakers in early Va. were: Wm. Whitaker of Charles City Co., d. 1623 (this is recorded in the records of the Va. Co.); Lt. Col.Wm. Whitaker, tobacco viewer of Warwick Co., 1639, and Burgess of James City Co. 1649 - 1656; Capt./Major Wm. Whitaker, Burgess of James City 1658 -1659, and member of the Council 1659 - 1662; and Wm. Whitaker of Elizabeth City Co., 1669 - 1695. (He was sponsored by the Ikens of Warwick, friends of the Whitakers.) The last three of these may have been related.
Major Wm. Whitaker was the father of Richard Whitaker (patent records). I will answer your GenForum message separately.

There is no record of Jabez living in Henrico County. Also he was a Burguess for Elizabeth City 1623/4, not James City. I have not seen any record of him living in James City. Also when he left around 1628 there are no records to incicate that he left " with his young family". All we know is that he departed the country.

I believe that there were only 2 William Whitakers living in the Jamestown area. One was William Whitaker, the viewer of tobacco, and his son William who we see mentioned around 1662 with his brother Richard.

Regarding William ( the viewer of tobacco ) as the son of Jabez you may want to read my message on Genealogy.com that I just posted on the Whitaker message board.

Bill

Hi, my great grandfather, Henry Allen Dial, was born in N.C. or Ga. around 1850-1865 and he lived in Tishomingo Co., Ms. with his wife Florence. He also had a sister or cousin who was in that area around the same time and she was married to a Scruggs. Does any of this sound familiar and if so please contact me? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Rhonda

Whitaker Pictures

Does anyone have a picture(s) of Robert Whitaker and Margaret Whitaker that they would share? I have all pictures of this generation of grandparents except these. Robert is the son of Francis A Whitaker of Floyd Co. KY. Margaret is the daughter of Abner Salyer and Elizabeth Patton also of Floyd Co. KY. They had children named: Henry, Jacob, Ellen, James, Mark, Elizabeth, and Ewing (know as Jack). Jack and his 1st. wife, Minnie Dennis, had an unfriendly divorce and I have very little information about him. I would appreciate any help.

Obit and Burial Info for Raymond B Whitaker

Raymond B Whitaker, one of my Granduncles, was born in 1919 in Caroline County, Virginia and passed away in September or Oct of 1983 as best I can tell in Maricopa Couny, Arizona. He was a politician from Wyoming and spent most of his life as a Lawyer in Casper. It's possible he was buried there, I just can't find any information in Maricopa County or in Casper, Wyoming via the Internet. If anyone has any information on his Obit and Burial location, I would appreciate hearing from you. His wife was Eillen Daly Whitacker and he had four children named Honora Whitacker Meads, John Whitaker, Raymond Whitaker and Terry Whitaker. By the way...some of his siblings spelled their last name Whittaker.

Going through some of my mother's paperwork, I ran across an account of the Whitaker line written by my Great Grandmother Juliet Marohn in 1913. I believe my aunt retyped it. It takes the line from Richard Whitaker-Squire and Elizabeth Whitaker and their escape from the Wyoming Valley massacre. Any one interested in this contact me.
Holly Mitchell
bpd147@gmail.com

I have listed the following children for Jacob and Prudence: David Tutterow (1809), Jesse (1811), George (1812), Bettie (1814), Tom (1816), William (1819), Hiram (1821). I'm only assuming that all of these are children of Jacob.

I think you may be correct that this David Casey is the father of two children by his wife's sister.

I have a little more info posted here:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~soneal/CAS...

and here:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

that may be of interest to you

Im looking for any info on a cleveland whitaker or a ishmael whitaker. One of my grandmothers accidentally put a second T in our name after my grandpa was born (Ishmael) My great grandfather (Cleveland) lived in ohio/wv. I can not find anything anywhere on ishmael. his wife was dicie pauley i think. cleveland wife was rumoured to be virginia or pearl. My family was pretty bad about keeping names and stuff consistent. email me at cudro@hotmail.com or itadakimatsu@yahoo.com
