Notes for Shadrack Whitehair:
Member of Company F, 3rd Regiment Infantry Volunteers of the Union Army during the Civil War. Enlisted in Clarksburg June 25, 1861 and was discharged by a surgeon's Certificate of Disability in Grafton. Shadrack was a Private in his military service.

When Shadrach died his underage children became the wards of the Goff family, who were large land owners in the area. He and Emory D. are buried in the National Cemetery in Grafton where they are listed as killed in action but their company history has both Shadrack and Emory as discharged as a result of wounds incurred and a doctor's certificate to that effect. They may have both died from those wounds.

The history of Company F is pertinent to Shadrack and Emory and is presented here.

This Company was first organized as a detachment in the field at North Branch, Md., Sept. 7, 1864, from the Veterans and Recruit, A. and H., 6th WVA Cavalry pursuant to Special Order #139, Headquarters Department of West Virginia July 29, 1864. On the 16th day of September, 1864, the Battalion 6th WVA Vet. Vol. Cavalry moved to New Creek, WVA where this Co. received a detachment of Recruits and its organization was completed. They remained at New Creek, WVA, scouting and skirmishing with the forces under General Rosser and Captain McNeil, the guerilla. On the 27th day of November 1864, this Company took part in an engagement near Moorefield, WVA, where it lost 2 men killed and one wounded.

On the 28th day of November 1864, the garrison of New Creek, WVA, of which this Company formed a part was surprised and captured. (The Co. records were destroyed thereby rendering the Company history incomplete.) Those who escaped capture were sent to Remount Camp, Pleasant Valley, Md., Jan. 10, 1865, where they remained until April 4, 1865. They moved thence to Opequan Crossing, Va., performed duty at that place, scouting in pursuit of the Guerilla Mosby until April 15, 1865. They then moved to Remount Camp, Md., where the exchanged prisoners returned and the Company was fully mounted and equipped. They marched to Berryville, Va., April 17, 1865, and the Company was assigned to duty in 2nd Cavalry Division under command of General Chapman. They then marched via Washington, D.C. to Falls Church, Va., April 23, 1865, and returned to Washington, D.C., April 25, 1865, marched to Surratsville, Md., April 26, 1865, in search of the assassin of President Lincoln. They engaged in scouting the vicinity of Surratsville, Bryantown, and Port Tobacco, Md.

The Company returned to Washington, April 28, 1865, for a Provost Duty assignment. It performed part of the guard on the day of the Grand Review and a portion of the escort of the court which tried the assassins. The Company was relieved at Washington, June 4, 1865, and reported to the Commanding Officer of the 2nd Division on +the discontinuance of the Cavalry Corps. The division was disbanded and the Company returned to Long Bridge, District of Columbia, June 8, where it remained until June 12, 1865. The Company then conducted operations in the West including Nebraska, Colorado, Missouri, Kansas, and the Dakotas. All in all the Company marched some 5600 miles by the time it mustered out in Fort Leavenworth, Kan., May 15, 1866.

He was discharged by virtue of a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability at Grafton, WVA He and brother Shadrack are buried in the National Cemetery in Grafton where they are listed as killed in action but their company history has both Shadrack and Emory as discharged as a result of wounds incurred and a doctor's certificate to that effect.
