Re: Whitehorse surname in TX, Cherokee

My birthfathers original Indian name was Jerome Hummingbird. When Native Americans started school they were given other names so they would forget their original names, the govt gave my birthfather the name Whitehorse. He was 3/4 or full-blood Kiowa. He is an artist. In my search for by birth parents there were many Hummingbirds that were of Cherokee descent and the Cherokee people lived around Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The Kiowa Indians lived around Anadarko, Oklahoma. You should search the documents at the NARA- in Fort Worth, Texas for answers. It is a building which holds all the census bureau records or military records for all the Native Americans that lived in Indian Territory which is now called Oklahoma! CMO

Jerome Whitehorse

Hi,
My birth fathers name is Jerome Whitehorse. I have not
met him because I was given up for adoption at one week old.
I believe he came from Oklahoma. My birth mother lives there. After meeting with my fathers brother Duane Whitehorse, I believe he lives in Montana on the Wind River
reservation. (Close to the Custer Last Stand Statue). My
grandmothers name was Susie Sittingbull and I have some
of the Census Bureaus Documentation showing her allotted
land. I think when my father was a child he went by the name
"Hummingbird". I'm told this is a Cherokee name. However,
my father is Kiowa Indian.(Full-blood).
