Whitehurst in Sumter Co, GA 1870

I am researching a family in 1870 Sumter Co, GA at Americus which is a widower and her children. All were born in GA.
Ann Whitehurst 40 keeps house, William (Jackson) 15 farm laborer, Owens 13, Henry 11, James 9, Mary 4. The oldest child, William Jackson was in Macon, GA, Bibb Co. in 1880 living with James Whitehurst, a clerk,33, who is son of Howell Little Whitehurst, who is son of Charles Whitehurst of central GA. Does anyone have information on this family?

I believe that our line of Whitehurst's came to Virgina from Staffordshire, England in the 1600's. I am specifically looking for any information regarding Willoughby Whitehurst born around 1797 and married I believe to Elizabeth Crisp. His father may have been Hillery (born around 1737) or Batson Whitehurst (born around 1735). I believe that Willoughby could be my GGGGgrandfather. Below is my lineage up to this point:

Great great great grandfather is James Whitehurst
Great great grandfather is James Alonza Whitehurst, Sr.
Great grandfather is James Alonza Whitehurst, Jr.
Grandfather is Arthur Renard Whitehurst
Father is Terrence Arthur Whitehurst.

Any info on Willoughby, Hillery and Batson Whitehurst would be greatly appreciated!

Leslie Whitehurst Schecterson

When did your great grandfather (Enoch Whitehurst) emigrate to the US? I'm researching a family which also contains an Enoch Whitehurst b 1850 in Wolstanton (in 1861 Census for Odd Rode he is listed as living with his stepfather and mother (Susannah b. Abt 1827) in Odd Rode, Staffs. In the 1881 Census Enoch is living in Wolstanton with his wife Mary.)

I think Enoch's mother Susannah Whitehurst married Abraham Rowley in 1851. He is listed as Abe's stepson on the1861 census. 1871 shows him as married to Mary (previously Hough) with a son Henry 3 months old.I do not know his parentage yet but Susannah's father was Ralph. Rowley is my husband's ancestral line. Hope this is a link for you. Wolstantonton was where Enoch was registered. not far from Silverdale an Mow Cop but more into the potteries round Stoke.

Hi Earl,

I'm researching my mother's family tree (she is a Whitehurst) and I have become stuck. I live in Australia so popping into the staffs records office is a little hard for me to do! I found this discussion and thought I'd give it a go to see if you could shed any light! Our Whitehursts are staffs Whitehursts, with Dilhorne, Longton, Carverswall, Cheadle & Stoke-Upon-Trent being the main places they lived. However in the early 1900's some moved away to Lancashire and thats where my part of my Whitehurst branch went.

I am stuck on a Ralph Whitehurst whom I do not have any dates for. I can not find any proper references for him although he is listed on my Great, Great, Great Grandfather Joseph Whitehurst's marriage certificate as his father. There is one possible reference that Ralph was married to an Ann Ibbs but I'm not certain of that.

What I do know is the following:

Joseph Whitehurst b.1816 in Dilhorne (Do not have his birth certificate or register, date taken from census' and marriage certificate)

Joseph Whitehurst m. 4 Feb 1840 in Caverswall to Elizabeth Wood (Father of Joseph Whitehurst listed as Ralph Whitehurst)

Joseph Whitehurst d. 1878 in Stoke-Upon-Trent (BMD Index)

I have two known children of Joseph and Elizabeth:
Emily Whitehurst b. 1841 (married John Ball)
George Whitehurst b. 1843 (married Sarah Shingler (in 1864), Mary Agnes Thorley(in 1872))

Joseph & ELizabeth lived in Caverswall, Longton & Stoke-Upon-Trent.

My connection is as follows:

Joseph Whitehurst & Elizabeth Wood
George Whitehurst & Mary Agnes Thorley
George Arthur Whitehurst & Elizabeth Hudson
Stanley Whitehurst & Ellen Abraham
Living Whitehurst & Living McMahon
Myself

I would be interested to know if you have any connections to this tree, I can give you more details if you like but Joseph is really as far back as I go at the moment. I would also like to know if you do know anything of Ralph Whitehurst.

Thanks for your help.

Nina

Yes. Thank you. This is definitely our ancestral line through Enoch Whitehurst. We have uncovered a marriage license which states that Abraham Kirkham was actually Enoch Whitehurst's father? We know that Charles Whitehurst, the man Susannah Harding listed as Enoch's father, was actually in prison at the time of his conception and birth. any info?

Their names are Edgerton Whitehurst (1780-1849), Charles Whitehurst (1825-?) and Ann Whitehurst (1844-?), and Enoch Whitehurst (1850-1882). Enoch was my great grandfather.
