Be careful! When I found out Henry was in the 208th, I started looking ... and now I have bios on most of the 1,000+ men who served in the 208th and probably 450 grave photos of the same. Obsessions begin innocently.

Happy Hunting,

Joe

Thanks for the reply and information.

I'm not related to James. I am researching the men of the 208th in their memory and in honor of my gg-grandfather, Henry S. Werline of Co. D.

While searching for information about Henry, I found stories about other men in his unit ... and the project just grew and grew!

James is the focus of my search since he was in the 208th.

Thanks for your help.

Joe
morse73@ptd.net

Are you from James' line, or are you just interested in the 208th?

Unfortunately, I don't have any photos of James or any of his family. I have only over thye past few years started to make connections to alot of the Whitesel lines in Huntingdon. However, I have not had much luck with making any communication with any of the descendants. Only recently did one cousin find my profile and we have talked and actually met. The few others I have looked up never responded back.

The only real difference I have regarding James is that he was either born in 1832 or 1844. I saw only one reference to his birth being in 1832, but all of his census records show him as being born around'44.

I show his children as David Jacob, Jennie, Mary, Rebecca, Samuel A., William Henry and Margaret Elizabeth. I have a little info on some of their families, but since I lost the info on my computer a few months back, I have not reentered it all again yet. Once I do, I can fill you in with what I have.

He a son of David and Elizabeth Whitesel. All that is known about Elizabeth is that she was born around 1812-14 in PA, was of Irish descent, and died between 1870 and 1880.

David was born between 1808 and 1810, in PA, a son of Henry and Catharine Whitesell, and died on the family farm in Oneida Township, Huntingdon County, PA June 10 1881. His second wife was Margaret. She was born Sep 1827 in PA.

David and Elizabeth had 6 children: Sarah Jane b. 1836-45, Henry (my gr-great grandfather) b. Feb 24 1842, James, John b. July 26 1846, William b. Sep 25 1848 and Mary Martha b. Jan 1851.

Henry first appears in Centre County PA in 1801 as a single free man, but his first child waas born close to that time, so he and Catharine must have married soon after.

They had 9 known children: Susanna, Sophia, David, Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Joseph, John, Henry and Sarah. I also have some info on most of these children as well.

It would probably be easier to e-mail if you are interested.

My e-mail is 78steelhead@comcast.net.
Thank you for the reply to my posting.

I believe we have a connection:

JAMES C. WHITESEL, son of David Whitesel, was born on April 10, 1832, in Huntington, Pennsylvania. He married Martha B. Emerick about 1870 in Illinois. James fathered seven known children. He applied for a pension on February 25, 1890. James was widowed in 1887, while living in Shelbyville, Shelby County, Illinois, and working as a farmer. He applied for a pension in Illinois on February 25, 1890. James died on November 3, 1905, and is buried in the Mount Carmel Cemetery, Shelbyville.

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=wh...;

I am interested in learning what I can about the men of the 208th. I would appreciate any and all additions or corrections that you might have for James' biography.

James served as a private in the 208th Pennsylvania.

Do you have a photo of James at any age?

Thanks,

Joe
morse73@ptd.net

Do you know where James may have settled after the war? I have a James C. that was a gr-great uncle of mine about the right age, but I never heard of him serving.

He moved from PA to IL where he and his wife raised their children and died. Not sure if these are the same 2 James' or not.

Herbert Leslie Whitesel dies of fractured skull and shock

Herbert Whitesel dies of fractured skull and shock

Herbert Leslie Whitesel, aged 61, of 1308 Washington Street, died of a fractured skull at his home Sunday morning, Oct. 7, 1945, at 7 o’clock, and Coroner E. Blair Shore, with the assistance of Huntingdon borough officers, D. L. Rupert and William H. Smucker and members of the state police are today continuing their investigation of the death to determine the manner in which Whitesel sustained the fatal injury.
According to Whitesel’s wife, she and her husband were walking along Washington Street early Sunday morning about 12:30 o’clock and Robert E. Harris, aged 38, of 1214 Mifflin Street, came along with a woman. Some words took place between the two men and, according to the wife, Harris struck her husband, causing him to fall to the street.
Borough officer William H. Smucker was called and found Whitesel lying on the street. At the request of the wife the officer took Whitesel to his home and placed him on the davenport. He appeared to be rallying before the officer departed and Officer Smucker suggested that a doctor be summoned. However, Whitesel did not rally and about 7 o’clock Sunday morning Dr. G. A. Parker was called to the Whitesel home, but upon arrival he found Whitesel had expired. Mrs. Whitesel states she was also struck by Harris.
Coroner Shore was summoned by Dr. Parker and the investigation was started. On the statements of the wife, Harris was taken into custody at the Stewart home, 908 Washington Street, and committed to the county jail. No charges of any nature have been filed against him, pending the completion of the investigation.
An autopsy was performed yesterday afternoon by Dr. Parker at the Temple funeral home in Petersburg, which revealed that death was due to a lineal fracture of the skull one and one-half inches long on the right side above the ear. Shock was a contributory factor, the doctor stated.
It was learned by the investigators that the parties involved had visited beer parlors in west Huntingdon during Saturday night, but apparently none was intoxicated.
Coroner Shore has not decided yet on whether or not an inquest will be held. District Attorney L. Newton Taylor is advising the investigators on procedure in their inquiry.
Herbert Leslie Whitesel was born in Miller Township on Aug. 12, 1884, a son of William and Sarah Jane (Harshbarger) Whitesel, both deceased. At the time of death he was aged 61 years, 1 month and 25 days.
He was employed at the Owens-Corning Fiberglas plant. He was of the Methodist faith and had been a resident of Huntingdon for the past nineteen years.
He is survived by his wife, whose maiden name was Mary Saner, and the following sons and daughters: Herbert W., Ray, Richard, Jay, Wayne, Susan Irene, all at home; S1/c Andrew Whitesel of San Pedro, Cal.; Mrs. Dorothy Kyle, of R. D., Huntingdon. Also surviving are three grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: Charles Whitesel, Mrs. Effie Steele, Miss Elsie Whitesel, all of Huntingdon; Allison Whitesel, Mrs. Howard Beatty, Mrs. Molly Lightner, all of R. D., Huntingdon; Frank Whitsel, Mrs. Charles Scott, of Petersburg; Jesse Whitesel of Chester, Pa.; Owen Whitesel of Altoona.
The body was prepared for undertaker Philip B. Temple of Petersburg. Arrangements for the funeral have not been completed, pending word from the son in the service in California.
