I am looking for information on my "brick wall", my great-great-grandfather, Luther Whitfield b 1832 Mississippi and died sometime in 1857. His wife's name was Kate (Mary Katharine) Samuel. They were married 2-14-1854 in Dallas County Arkansas.
Luther had three brothers: William E., married Mattie Moore; James Kenan. married Mary Beckman; and Edmund Burke, never married;
The father Edmund Hatch Whitfield built a redbrick house in Camden, on West Washington street in the late 1840s, that he named Fontania. It was the first house listed in all the census records for Camden Arkansas when he was living there.
William was a merchant, James Kenan was a doctor, Edmund was a business man, and the ancester I am researching, Luther was a journalist. He was editor of a paper in Camden called the Camden Stamp in 1855 and 1856.
Edmund Hatch Whitfield posted an item in the Ouachita Herald on Dec 10, 1857 and 11-26-1857, listing himself as administrator of the estate of L R Whitfield and to forward any bills against that estate to him.
That makes me think that Luther died around October of 1857 and also his wife. Another item that points to his and Kate's death prior to 1860 is that his daughter was living with his parents in 1860 and also was there on the 1870 census.
A search of Ouachita county cemetery listings on line do not show a Luther or Kate Whitfield buried in Camden, but I think that they are at least buried some where in Ouachita county.
I would love to see what any one else may have on the Whitfields in Camden Arkansas
