I have only just started looking into family history and i came across your post.
our family of Whiteman is from the East Anglia area of England but funily enough DAVID is a cam that carries on through our lot. my father is David Frederick, he passed the name onto my eldest brother Malcolm David and he only had girls so i named my eldest David. my father has told me that DAVID has been passed down the lineage for as long as my Nan can remember and she is nearly 100

In the mid-1850s William was married to Roxanna. She had two children by him, Melissa and I think Lauretta in the later 1850s.Would like to know who Roxannas' parents and grandparents were and where they are from.In 1883 Roxanna died alone in Canal Township.
Decendants of Jonas Witman or Whitman

Decendants of Jonas Witman
MpWhitman - Whitman Family 97005 @ ancestry.com

Lebanon County, Pennsylvania

My search ends with the Jun 1 1840 US Federal Census of Heidleberg, Lebanon Co. There I have found my G.G.G.Grandfather Jonas Witman, father of Jonas my link. There is not a J.Witman on any of the US Census Docs prior to that in the area.

His birth would have been April 11, 1810 and he died June 21, 1865, prior to the 1870 Enumaration. His wife Sarah was born April 28, 1810 and died December 15, 1880. Both lived thier lives in Lebanon County PA, and are intered in Bucher Meeting House Cemetery, Rexmont, PA.

My G.G.Grandfather was Jonas "Jr.". This is the parent that changed the spelling to Whitman. He was born April 16, 1843 and died July 31, 1925. His spouse was Harriet Cox. Harriet was born Mar 15,1844 and died Nov 2, 1881. They both lived thier entire life in Lebanon County, Pa as well. They are intered in the Methodist/Episcopal Cemetery.

Jonas Sr. and Sarah had 10-children I am ablt to verify:
John, Peter, Elizabeth, Henry, Leah, Jonas Jr, Lori, Levi, Sarah, and William.

Jonas Jr. and Harriett had 5-children I am able to document: Jane, Frank, Edward, Joseph, and Robert.

If any of these might rign a bell and may appear in your tree, I would like to compare notes. Myself and another Family member are trying to fill in the blanks for he missing information, and work down for most descendants from Jonas Sr.

I personally am trying to get the next leap to the next ancestor. It does appear that a good number of the Witmans of this time are from 1 of 2 fellows. Any assistance would be great. I am well aware of the Penn Colonies recruitment of persons in SW Germany and this does appear to be appropriate for this line.

I have tried the Lebanon cites as well as Penn Archives electronically and keep hitting the wall. I know live in Oregon.

Thanks, Mike Whitman
mpwhit @ hotmail.com

At this time I have not uncovered a Xavier. I will take a note. This family used Witman from 1840's to present, some started using Whitman, like me, around 1900 to avoid confusion. The family is from the German speaking part of Penn. Again, I will keep a lookout.

Mike

Hello Cousin!

Mamie is my Great Aunt. My Grandmother, Willie Mae Whitman (Bill as she was called) was Mamie's Niece. Her Father, Charles Edward Whitman was Mamie's Brother. Between me and my cousin Vicky we should be able to give you lots of information. We have some pictures of Mamie, but not many. Do you have pictures of that side of the family or photos you are trying to identify? Wait till you see the proposal letter from Mamies Father to her Mother. It's Gorgeous. Like something out of romance movie. Do you have a picture of Licander Monroe Whitman, Mamie's father? We are missing a picture of him. Looking forward to helping each other.

James Edward Creamer
Albuquerque, NM, USA
james87106@yahoo.com

I don't have this person in my tree currently, although it is possible that they are from the same branch of the tree. I visited South Cerney last year, looking for gravestones with the Whitman name but was unable to find any, it may have been because the Whitmans appear to have been Methodists.

This is directed to Alice Jordan. I am a direct decendant of Abraham Pendlebury and Elinor Fawcett (they were divorced around 1850)and George Henry Pendlebury and Ella Whitman. My Mother was Edna Irene Pendlebury, the yougest of this marriage. I saw your posting some time ago and could not find a way to contact you. I am looking for what happened to Abraham after he deserted Elinor Fawcett in Wisconsin. Elinor remarried but there is no trace of Abraham. He did not die in Iowa and is not buried in the cemetery in Ayrshire, Iowa. I cannot find evidence of where he was born. I am Dean V. Dannewitz and I was born in Iowa in the same county as Ayrshire. Mary and Joel were married in Rolfe, Iowa

Dean, you found me. I, too, have been unable to find anything on Abraham Pendlebury after 1867 when he was a patient in the Tewksbury Almshouse in Massachusettes. However, some patient scrolling through census records turned up the Pentlebury family:

1841 census, Ashton Under Lyne, Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire, England.

John, age 55
Alice, age 50
Abram (Abraham?) age 15
Alice, Age 14
Elizabeth, age 20
Jacob, age 20
Jane, age 25
Mary, age 25

On year later, 1842, the passenger list of the ship "Echo" lists the Pendlebury family:

John, age 56
Mrs. age 55
Mary, age 23
Elizabeth, age 20
John, age 25
Jacob, age 19
John, age 15
Alice (?), age 13

The 1850, census for Poughkeepsie, Duchess, New York lists Jacob Pendlb ury, age 27, born abt 1823, which tallies with the ship's passenger list. Ages match closely, allowing for mistakes in transcription and an unreadable image of the England 1841 census.

Abraham, as you know, was married in Poughkeepsie, New York. The Tewksbury patient record, of which I have a copy, gives corroborating information on his immigration and his residency in New York.

I will continue to search for Abraham's whereabouts after his release from Tewsbury in 1867.

My email is farmgirl@wil.midco.net

Regards, Alice Jordan
