PLEASE NOTE, THIS WAS POSTED FOR REFERENCE ONLY. I AM NOT RELATED TO, NOR AM I RESEARCHING THIS FAMILY, I’VE ONLY DONE A COPY AND PASTE FROM OUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER FYI.

THIS INFO HAS BEEN POSTED WITH THE PERMISSION OF THE EDITOR OF THE COLUMBIA BASIN HERALD.
Susan Dian Kanenwisher Whitmer
Posted: Thursday, Apr 24, 2008 - 04:27:27 pm PDT
COLUMBIA BASIN HERALD, MOSES LAKE, WASHINGTON STATE

Susan Dian Kanenwisher Whitmer has gone to be with her Lord and Savior after a year-long illness.

Susan was born in Minot, N. D., on Oct. 10, 1942, to Bennie and Margrit (Moen) Kanenwisher. Susan lost her dear mother Margrit when she was only two weeks old. Her father took her and her sister to California for about a year and then traveled on to live in Warden. During these few years the girls were cared for by loving aunts and grandparents. When Susan was two, Bennie remarried Verna Marie Graham, which began a blended family including Janice, Susan, Gary, Kenny and later on, Judy. She spent her childhood years in Othello. She had a lovely singing voice and during her high school years was selected to participate in many choral events. Her long blond hair was beautiful and a source of admiration.

She married at the early age of 17 to William (Bill) A. Whitmer. They had four children: Gayle, Scott, Brenda, and David. In 17 years of marriage, Sue and Bill moved many times, though staying in the Adams and Grant county area.

When the marriage ended in 1977, Sue moved to Moses Lake. She worked as a manager of the Eagles, catering, and working at other jobs to support herself and her youngest children. In 1995 she took a trip to the south and fell in love with Clyde Cummings. They were married shortly thereafter and spent 10 happy years together. Illness necessitated her move to Eastern Washington, where she could be near her children.

She is survived by her four siblings: Janice (Jim) Gower, Gary (Gloria) Kanenwisher, Kenneth (Krista) Kanenwisher, and Judith (Carol) Harper. Survivors also include her loving children: Gayle (Dave) Bonato, Scott (Sylvia) Whitmer, Brenda (John) Whitmer-Morris, and David (Rosa Torres) Whitmer; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and two grandsons, Tony and Matthew Bonato. Susan's greatest love was her family.

She had many hobbies, including reading, sewing, cooking, and gardening. She also crafted, quilted, made dolls and artwork for her own enjoyment, as well as for extra income. Her skills as a seamstress were famous in the area where she lived. It gave her great satisfaction to help others and give to the needy. She especially liked to give gifts of food. In her later years she worked as an in-home health care giver, but that doesn't encompass all that she did for other people. She was always willing to go the extra mile and thought nothing of providing her services for free when needed. Her clients loved her and spoke highly of her. She had many special friends in Washington, as well as Texas, namely Rita Osborn, who also preceded her in death. Susan and Rita were the "Thelma and Louise" of their time.

At the end of her illness she was loved, cared for, and watched over by Dr. Irene Kimura and the supportive staff of Samaritan Hospital. She will be missed by all who knew her. Graveside service will take place at Bess Hampton Memorial Cemetery in Othello, at 2 p.m., followed by a memorial service and reception at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 640 E. Elm Street, Othello, officiated by Pastor Teresia Calene. Flowers should be sent to 3863 Denton Road, Moses Lake, WA. Memorial donations may be sent to Moses Lake Food Bank. Arrangements are in care of Kayser's Chapel and Crematory, Moses Lake. Please sign the book or leave a note for the family at www.kayserschapel.com.
Francis Suffare Whitmer was my third great grandfather. Most of what information I have is on my genealogy web site at http://www.nrmcburney.net/Mac/Genealogy/. After wallowing through that, and if you don't have a copy of "Descendants of The Swiss Immigrant Sons of John Whitmer" by Lyle & Marceline Whitmer (second edition 1984), I'll be glad to look through that reference for whatever I can help you with - Mac

charles whitmer rebecca landis

Just received the death certificate for my great grandfather Emanuel Whitmer listing his parents as Charles Whitmer and Rebecca Landis. I have found a 1850 census in Beaver, Mahoning, Ohio listing Charles, Rebecca and children Milton, Levi, Penrose, Samuel (all born in Pennsylvania) and Lewis (Louis), Edward, Angeline (last three born in Ohio). The spelling of the last name was Wetmore. I have also found a 1860 census in Springfield, Mahoning, Ohio with last name as Whitmer listing Charles, Rebecca, Milton Levi, Penrose, Samuel (all born in Pennsylvania), and Louis, Edward, Angeline, Lucena (later 4 born in Ohio). There is a glaring absense of Emanuel. I found a 1870 census Beaver, Mahoning, Ohio listing head as George Witmer, Rebecca, Angeline, Emanuel, Lucy (children born in Ohio, parents in Pennsylvania). I am very confused on the first name of the head of household change.

Emanuel married Celestia J Wunderlin in Mahoning, Ohio and lived in Falls River, Nebraska where Celestia and a baby boy died. They had children Charles David (moved to Denver, Colo where he died), Raymond (died in WWI service), Lottie (haven't found her past age 18. Family info says she died young), Marcus (my grandfather moved to Clark, Routt County, Colorado where he married Josephine Norman and had three children: Russell, Mary, and Ray). Emanuel remarried Mary F, moved on to California where he passed away in 1940.

Any information on these lines would be greatly appreciated.

have more information on whitmer wonderlin

Received the death certificate for Emanuel Whitmer. It lists his parents as Charles Whitmer and Rebecca Landis. I have found a Charles and Rebecca Whitmer listed on the 1850 census for Beaver, Mahoning, Ohio. The spelling of their last name was Wetmore. I also found them on the 1860 Springfield, Mahoning, Ohio census, but my Emanuel was not listed with them. The strange thing is I found Rebecca Witmer listed on 1870 census Beaver, Mahoning, Ohio listing Emanuel age 14 (he was born Oct 12, 1855) with two of the girls listed on the 1860 and one of the girls listed on the 1850 census previously mentioned. The confusing thing on the 1870 census lists head of household as George Witmer.

Celestia's parents are David and Lydia Wunderlin. I have found them on the 1880, 1870 census in Beaver, Mahoning, Ohio.

Any help on these lines would be greatly appreciated.

Hi I am descended from a line of Whitmers through my ggrandmaother who was a Whitmer. I am looking for info on Jacobus Antonius Widmer b. 1804 I believe in Switzerland, and his son Joseph Anton Whitmer b. 1835 he, I think was born In upstate New York. If any one has any info that could help me find any more about this line I would be eternally grateful.

Howdy,

I am probably one of your shirt-tailed relatives from the Mathias, West Virginia Whitmers. My wife, Lynn, and I will be traveling to Europe May 1, 2006, and will be visiting Switzerland. Sure would be nice to know the town/location within Switzerland our grandfathers came from.

Some say St. Gallens is where Francis (one of John's sons) was born in 1803 and others say Berne. Any ideas where his father John (Hans?) born 1762 came from???

Any information would be appreciated.

Best regards,

Duane Whitmer
Cody, Wyoming

James Whitmer is the son of Peter and Catharine Whitmer.

Joshua is the son of Michael and Mary Whitmer. (Mary and her family are listed.)

Elias is the son of Jacob Witmer.

Michael and Jacob migrated to Cedar County from Northumberland County PA. Peter came to Cedar County from Crawford County OH in 1849, and was probably living in Northumberland County before that time.
These three men are probably all related and some sources specifically say cousins, but we do not know the exact connection.
A key problem is not knowing the father of Peter. We would all like to know the answer to that mystery. Peter had 13 children and there are hundreds of descendants in the area. In fact we still have a reunion where these descendants gather. I am a descendant of Peter's youngest son, Peter Jr. and still live in Sugar Creek Township.

Jeff Kaufmann

Hi Leonette,

Although I don't have anything directly to do with the persons you listed, I am very clearly descended from at least one Whitmore/Whitmer line in Clarion County, as my paternal grandfather and his father and paternal grandfather all were born in Clarion County. My line is:

1. John Whitmore
2. Jacob Whitmore
3. John Whitmore/Whitmer
4. Samuel K. Whitmore
5. Bennie Alonzo Whitmore
6. Harry Burdett Whitmore (my grandfather)
7. (Living) (my father)

I've got source materials to prove all from 4 to 7. Before that is based upon another person's research and I need to get copies of their source materials.

I'm told that this line descends from Swiss immigrants into USA.

I've also located information on other Whitmore/Whitmer/Witmer/Wittmer people in Clarion Co. and neighboring counties. I've also found lots of intermarrying between my line and nearby clans, so if you can provide a descendency and/or pedigree for any of the people you mentioned, it could help place yours relative to mine.

I'd be very interested in any information you can provide and would like to keep in touch with you to see if there is a connection.

Greetings,

Ken Whitmore

Hi Ken,
The only real information that I have is that Lucy Ann Whitmir/Whitmore is the daughter of a Whitmir and Over.
I am going on an old note. It says her father was a Whitmir and that her mother was the grand daughter of Jacob Over.
Her father a son of Jacob had a daughter, who married a Whitmire. The note also states that he was from Switzerland and went from Philadephia to Clarion Co..
In the census I found one of Lucy's daughter's Emma with an Uncle by the name of Jerry Whitmir. He was 65 and a teamster, living in New Athens, Madison Twp., Clarion Co., PA. This is all that I have to go on. Her Obiturary gives no clues.
Thank you

Jeremiah Whitmer/Jerry Whitmer/Emma Beer(niece)

In the 1880 census of Licking Twp., Clarion Co.,
Jeremiah is listed as a widow/Teamster he is 85 years of age born in PA.
Emma Beer 18 niece keeping house born in PA.
Emma is the daugther of George Beer and Lucy Ann Whitmer.
According to some very old letters Lucy Ann Whitmer(Whitmore) is the daugther of Unknown Whitmer and Unknown Over(Ober).
According to my great great grandfather's will she was married to a Bailey which is two doors away from Jeremiah and Emma. There are several Whitmir's(Whitmore's) who are witnesses on his will.
Lucy Ann Whitmir(Whitmore according to her Obituary)
is probably the sister of Jeremiah.
Because the letter was written in 1959 by a 91 year old granddaughter of George and Lucy Ann nee Whitmir-Beer the sequence of events could be out of order. Lucy may be the granddaughter of Whitmer and Over(Ober). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Gladys Hosman Whitmer and John Walter Whitmer were my grandparents. From the research i have done so far I don't believe our line is directly related to the David, John, and Peter Whitmer who helped in the early day of the Mormon Church. Would love to share info and am wondering if you are researching for someone else, as I don't recognise your name??? Thanks! Karen Whitmer Cramer

Re: Abraham Whitmer

This Abraham is a popular source of inquiries.

The best theory I have heard is that he is the son of Jacob Witmer (b 1771, Lancaster, PA) and Susan Herr (b 1772, PA). He was born 12-Feb-1806 in Lancaster, PA, and married Catherine Bowman, b 25-Mar-1810 in Montgomery Co, OH. (In the 1850 census in St Joseph Co, IN, the mother Susan is living with Abraham.)

Their children were:
Jacob - b 1828
David - b 1830
John - b 1832
Susana - b 1833
Isaac - b 1835
Anna - b 1837
Christiana - b 1840
Daniel - b 1842
Henry - b 1844
Mary - b 1846
Lydia - b 1848

That's 11 by my count!

Elizabeth Inman died 7-Feb-1917.

As for the children of Daniel and Elizabeth, I don't have a Harry listed. I have listed a daughter named Amelia Jane, b 7-Sep-1876. Perhaps she is the unnnamed daughter you mentioned.

Regards,
Charles Whitmer (a 12th cousin, at best)
PS - If you are in contact with a male WHITMER of this line, I would love to have his DNA tested.

You wrote:
Abraham b in PA (early 1800's) He was a Brethren minister, and married Catherine Bowman. They had 10 children, but th only one I can name is Daniel b 21 April 1842 in Indiana, d 29 Dec 1931 in Wabash, IN. Also a Brethren minister, he married Elizabeth Inman b abt 1844 d bet 1910-20. They had 8 children, Rosetha, Emma, Alzina,Merrill, Elva,Margaret, Harry and one un-named female married to C.N. Stutsman, died in car crash in 1931.

Hi, Harry,

I'm sending you an 8 page biography I've compiled on our common ancestor Johann Peter Witmer (1736-1793) and a 3 page biography of his father Samuel Witmer. Samuel Witmer's father was Hans Jacob Wittmer (ca. 1671-1728) of France. He married Elizabeth Hirtzeler.

I have that Peter Witmer Sr, moved to Ohio, then a territory, from Pa in 1799, and settled in that part of territory known as Belmont County, and near St Clairsville then known as Newelltown. In the year of 1800 Mr. Peter Ovenmeyer, whose sister was the wife of Peter Whitmer Sr., moved from their home in the same neighborhood or near them for about one year. Then in 1802 the two families cam eto Perry County and located near New Reading where the old folks resided unitl their death and here several surviving relatives still live. Peter Whitmer Sr., a revolutionary soldier, was born January 11, 1760 and is buried at Somerset, Ohio, He married Magdalene Overmeyer (ovenmier) who was born Auguts 2, 1767 and to this union were born eleven children.
Is there something specific you are searching for?

Hi Rebecca,
My wife's Whitmers are from Muhlenberg Co. also, and I'm researching our families. My relatives are from Hardin and Grayson counties, and hers are from Muhlenberg and Hancock counties. Seems like with Jo Ellen's family (father Evans+ mother Whitmer), the Stewarts and the Whitmers are really good friends. I have some similar intermixing in my family too, with several 1st cousin once removed marriages.

Anyway, to respond to your message, I'd be interested in these stories too. There are a few stories in Jo Ellen's family but they aren't something you'd write a book with. We're still trying to figure out a few connections in only her 5th generation such as William Stewart b1833 and Sarah Shank b1833 of Muhlenberg Co.

As soon as I sit with interview her mother, this Christmas, maybe I'll have something to share about our Whitmers.

- Jeffrey Buchanan
I have photograph of Mayo Whitmer

During a visit to the local antique mall last summer, I picked up a studio photograph of Mayo Whitmer. It looks to have been taken around the turn of the 20th century and he looks to be in his late teens or early 20's. It's a very nice photo and I'd dearly love to get it back to a direct or indirect family member. If Mayo is yours, please contact me at mmundy@indiana.edu so I can return him to you!
