Ancient West Parish Cemetery Haverhill, Massachusetts

Ancient West Parish Cemetery on Carleton St.:
A clean up has begun of this burial ground, through the weekend supervisor at the Haverhill Historical Society, Tom Spitalere. My understanding is that so far it has been all volunteer work; however I visited there last weekend and it is obvious that it needs a lot of attention, work and expertise. Many stones missing, down, broken, etc. Lots of tree work still to be done. This is an effort taken on by Tom but he will need help and I would urge anyone with a genealogical connection to this cemetery to contact the Haverhill Historical Society to find out how you can be of help. If funds need to be raised (which I am sure they do) I feel that there are enough descendants of these families out there that a few bucks put together from each of us could really add up to something. It would be very exciting if this cemetery could receive the attention it needs, as a good portion of Haverhill's history lies buried there.
Now comparing visible stones to a 1953 Transcription of the stones there done by the DAR. This record is found in the Manuscript Library at NEHGS, call # MS 70 HAV 6.

Stone read James Eatton; d. 18 Mar 1773, age 76; according to the DAR trancscription done 1953.

[John and Abigail were the parents of the poet John Greenleaf Whittier, the others apparently ancestors of the poet's father].
I've seen reference on this board to graves being moved to the Whittier homestead cemetery; but there were obviously stones in 1953 at Ancient West Parish. I am wondering if anyone knows whether these graves could have been moved or if the stones are just gone.

I am interested in knowing of any other children of all of these. Also wondering how John Greenleaf Whittier fits in. I think that he also goes back to Thomas Whittier, but wondering if it is through Nathanial 1658 or another son of Thomas and Ruth.
I have an old (1847) letter written by my g-g-g-g-grandmother Dorcas (nee Whittier) Shaw to one of her daughters, Vilena Stevens Holton who had moved west to Quincy IL. Dorcas and her husband Joseph Shaw lived in New Sharon, Maine. She writes in this letter about people living in the area. I also have an autograph book which belonged to Vilena Stevens Holton which dates back to 1837. There are names with dates and places in Maine. If anyone is interested, I could post these names.

I am looking for Andrew J. Whittier. Information I have is that he was born in New Hampshire bet. 1835-1844. I have just ordered his Civil War Service records, as he was with the 3rd Mass. Cav., enlisting out of Lexington NY in 1861 and was promoted to First Lieutenant in the 4th Regiment U.S. Colored troops in 1864. He was apparently part of the occupation force of New Orleans during the Civil War. I believe that I found him living in Alexandria, Louisiana in 1870, a "United States Officer" age 31, having been born in New Hampshire. There was a wife, Martha, age 33 from Kentucky, and a child, Mary, age 12, born in Louisiana. However someone else, one Eliza Whittier from Pennsylvania applied for his Civil War Pension, in 1890 and 91. I am also awaiting those records. Strangely there was an "alias" attached to his name - Roland Forrester. Does anyone have any other information?

I am not related to this family, but have come across a book of the Whittier genealogy written in 1873 by D.B. Whittier of Boston, Mass. It begins with Thomas Whittier born in 1620 in England to Rufus Whittier married to Emeline Currier in the 1800's. Information is not extensive, but helpful to this line. A different spelling of the surname I know, but, it depended on who was doing the writing.
I have a family tree with the name spelt in several ways.
My Whitear's originate from the Tidcombe area of Wiltshire UK, then Hurstbourne Tarrant, Winchester and Preston Candover, all Hampshire, UK. In Preston Candover the family were the village Blacksmith's for many years.

I am trying to trace Ovando (son of Henry D. and Sarah). I find him in each Census between 1850-80 then he disappears. 1890 is a given loss (fire) and 1900 would find him to be approximately 50 yrs old.

Lorraine Falk Whittier, 84, of Chula Vista died March 1. She was born in Beroun, Minn., and was a personnel supervisor.

Survivors include her husband, Robert; daughters, Suzanne Bridges of Scripps Ranch and Carol Stuardo of Chula Vista; sons, Robert Whittier of Lakeside and Thomas Whittier of Chula Vista; brother, John Falk of Minnetonka, Minn.; and six grandchildren.

Services have been held.

Searching for my sister-via Whittier family line

Hi-I was born in Rhode Island to John Whittier in 1968. My parents divorced when I was 2-John Whittier. I believe my grand parents are still in the South Kingstown or Narraganset area-I cannot recall meeting my father-I heard he had been in Ohio and even Atlanta. My sister, Martha Cassidy-about 3 to 5 years younger than I, found me in 1993 just before I moved to Connecticut and then CO. I am searching for my half sister-John Whittier is also her father.

Believe Nathaniel Srs. parents were Hiram and Ann (Stoyell) Whittier originally from Chesterville and Farmington, Maine respectively.

Does anyone here know the full details about the remains that were moved from the small gravesite at the Whittier Homestead in Haverhill (John Greenleaf Whittier birthplace) to the large family plot in Amesbury? If not, can anyone tell me the names on ALL of the tombstones in the Whittier Family Plot in the Union Cemetery in Amesbury? The exhumations may have happened around the 1890s but details are sketchy. Thanks in advance for any leads.

When my husband and I were taking a bluebonnet drive through the Hill Country of Central Texas, we stopped at the Hill County Memorial Hospice Thrift shop in Fredericksburg.
There were 2 photos for sale there(I did not feel that I had the extra cash to buy them). There were very good framed reproductions of old photos of Elkahah Phillips Whittier, b. 17 Sept 1812 in Metheun, N. H. who was the son of Richard and Anna Lettice Phillips Whittier. He died 13 June 1903 at Empire, MN or ? Also a photo of his wife, Polly Riddle Phillips with her dates on back and the name of the person who had them reproduced. Clarence Charles "Whit" Whittier, 88, died Friday at Havenwood Heritage
Heights. He was born in Concord, the son of Scott G. and Maron (Hurd)
Whittier. Whit, as friends knew him, worked as a machinist for Fuller Brush of
Manchester, Conn. He was a member of the East Congregational Church and
a seventh-degree Granger. He enjoyed woodworking, cabinetry and carpentry
and built the family home in Connecticut. He also enjoyed playing cards,
square dancing and camping. He served as a corporal in the 1280th Engineer
Combat Battalion during World War II. His brother, Carl Whittier, died
previously. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth (Knapp) Whittier; a
son, Charles A. Whittier of Newport, Penn.; a brother, Bernard Whittier of
Concord; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and
nephews. Services will be held at the convenience of the family, with burial in
the veterans cemetery in Boscawen. Memorial contributions may be made to
the Havenwood Heights Endowment Fund, 33 Christian Ave., Concord
03301. Affordable Funeral and Cremation Services Inc. is in charge of
arrangements.

Note: I am of no relation, but my sympathies go out to those of you who are.
This is here as a lasting memorial for Mr. Whittier.

Do you have any information on Lucy's parents? I'm trying to document her family...6 siblings? I think there should be more from the birth dates. Lucy was born 1824 in Oswego county NY and died after 1857 in MI. She md a second time to a Mr Beecher (sp?)

I am a descendant but do not know if thru my grandfather (J Jacob Astor Brown 1858-1912) or grandmother Ella Dorherty(sp) Brown(1865-1925).I have a picture of a Whittier who was a taxidermist in New England, maybe Vermont.My grandparents homesteaded in Gibbon, Nebr. and there is a Whittier listed there. I find it most interesting to know who the women have been in my past because let's face it they are the ones who instilled the 'culture' in each new generation - the language at home, the food on the table , the social graces. I think I finally found a record showing George Whittier's middle initial as A. There were several Geo's in Deerfield NH, 1850-1900! and all without a middle initial or a different one.
George's wife is Laura C(lemena) SMITH.
They had several children, incl Grace A(?) WHITTIER.

John G. Whittier, reportedly the great nephew of the poet, married Grace Coffee and fathered 7 Children: John Leo, Margaret, George Norman, Floyd, Roy, Ruth, and Ralph.
