Ancient West Parish Cemetery Haverhill, Massachusetts

Ancient West Parish Cemetery on Carleton St.:
A clean up has begun of this burial ground, through the weekend supervisor at the Haverhill Historical Society, Tom Spitalere. My understanding is that so far it has been all volunteer work; however I visited there last weekend and it is obvious that it needs a lot of attention, work and expertise. Many stones missing, down, broken, etc. Lots of tree work still to be done. This is an effort taken on by Tom but he will need help and I would urge anyone with a genealogical connection to this cemetery to contact the Haverhill Historical Society to find out how you can be of help. If funds need to be raised (which I am sure they do) I feel that there are enough descendants of these families out there that a few bucks put together from each of us could really add up to something. Please contact Tom to inquire as to how you could donate time or money to this cause:
Haverhill Historical Society:
http://www.haverhillhistory.org/html/contact_us.htm

I've been working on compiling as much information available of all names buried there. There are many HAYNES family burials at this cemetery, which is the family I connect to. Please feel free to contact me if you'd like more information on the people buried in the cemetery and I will try to help you out. Here is a listing of most visible stones (other than HAYNES) still left at the cemetery; and known burials there:
Cornet Edwoord [Edward] Carleton, & wife Hannah Carelton
Lt. Timothy Emerson
Jonathan Emerson
Lt. Jonathan Webster & wife Abigail (Dustin)
Peter Ayer & wife Abigail (Eaton)
Dea. Peter Ayer & (I think) wife Lydia
Lucie Merriel (Merrill), d. of Nathaniel & Ruth [this stone very bad]
Mr. ???? Merriel [this stone also very bad]
Selah Jarsey
Col. Evan Merrill, h. of Anna HAYNES
Capt. James Mitchell
James Mitchell, s. of Lt. James & Martha
Nathan Perley
Richard Ayer
Richard G. Ayer
Ensign Daniel Ladd & wife Susannah (Hartshorn)
James Batton (stone is there, cannot find in VR's)
Samuel Ayer
Samuel Ayer, s. of Dr. William & Abigail Ayer
Thomas Bayley
Miss Betsey Kimball
Allen W. Sargent
Dea. William Webster & wife Muriel (can't find in VR's)
John Lad, s. of John & Mary
Ensign John Lad[d]
Sarah (Smith) Emery, w. of Joshua
Thomas Harris & wife [Jo]hanna
Jonathan Harris
Samuel Barber & wife Rebecca
Hannah How[e], widow; s. of Sam. & Reb. Barber
Joseph Runels, s. of Samuel & Hannah Runels

THE FOLLOWING NAMES ARE BURIED AT ANCIENT WEST Parish PER HAVERHILL VR'S; BUT NO STONE IS VISIBLE:

Eunice Bayley, w. of Thomas
Mrs. Sarah Bayley
Robert Frank, Jr.
Samuel Hassaltine
Richard Kimbal
Susannah Ladd
Andrew Mitchell
Sarah Mitchell, w. of Ebenezer
Hew Smeith [Smith]
Dea. Nathan Webster
Sarah (Low) Webster, w. of Dea. Nathan

It would be very exciting if this cemetery could receive the attention it needs, as a good portion of Haverhill's history lies buried there.
Now comparing visible stones to a 1953 Transcription of the stones there done by the DAR. This record is found in the Manuscript Library at NEHGS, call # MS 70 HAV 6.
Correction:
James Batton is error:
Stone read James Eatton; d. 18 Mar 1773, age 76; according to the DAR trancscription done 1953.

8 Whittier burials at Ancient West Parish for which I saw no stones [DAR recorded them as "some distance up the back of the homestead"]:
Thomas Whittier 1620-1696
Ruth Green Whittier [Blank] - 1710
Joseph Whittier 1669-1739
Mary Peasley Whittier 1676- [blank]
Joseph Whittier 2nd 1717-1796
Sarah Greenleaf Whittier 1721-1807
John Whittier 1760-1830
Abigail Hussey Whittier 1780-1857
[John and Abigail were the parents of the poet John Greenleaf Whittier, the others apparently ancestors of the poet's father].
I've seen reference on this board to graves being moved to the Whittier homestead cemetery; but there were obviously stones in 1953 at Ancient West Parish. I am wondering if anyone knows whether these graves could have been moved or if the stones are just gone.

Lisa Munn-Haynes
lhaynes9722 at yahoo dot com.

John Whittier/Ruth Green - Questions

I have just recently acquired my paternal grandmother's records for DAR. We are descended from Thomas Whittier (1622) and Ruth Green as follows:
Nathanial Whittier 1658 and Mary Bracket Ring 1676
Reuben Whittier 1686 and Deborah Pillsbury
Nathanial Whittier 1711 and Hannah Clough
William Whittier 1752 and Elizabeth Hankerson
Dorcas Whittier 1780 and (2)Joseph Shaw New Sharon, Maine
(1) marriage was to Joshua Stevens Mt.Vernon, Maine
Josephine Ruth Shaw 1822 and Jacob Sanborn Cater 1821
Vilena Holten Cater 1860 and Frances Asbury Barnes 1845
Bessie Ethel Barnes 1871 and John Henry Cooper 1866
and then my grandmother, Wynnifred Ramona Cooper
I am interested in knowing of any other children of all of these. Also wondering how John Greenleaf Whittier fits in. I think that he also goes back to Thomas Whittier, but wondering if it is through Nathanial 1658 or another son of Thomas and Ruth.
I have an old (1847) letter written by my g-g-g-g-grandmother Dorcas (nee Whittier) Shaw to one of her daughters, Vilena Stevens Holton who had moved west to Quincy IL. Dorcas and her husband Joseph Shaw lived in New Sharon, Maine. She writes in this letter about people living in the area. I also have an autograph book which belonged to Vilena Stevens Holton which dates back to 1837. There are names with dates and places in Maine. If anyone is interested, I could post these names.
Janet Cosgrove
Yamhill, Oregon

Andrew J. Whittier, alias Roland Forrester

I am looking for Andrew J. Whittier. Information I have is that he was born in New Hampshire bet. 1835-1844. I have just ordered his Civil War Service records, as he was with the 3rd Mass. Cav., enlisting out of Lexington NY in 1861 and was promoted to First Lieutenant in the 4th Regiment U.S. Colored troops in 1864. He was apparently part of the occupation force of New Orleans during the Civil War. I believe that I found him living in Alexandria, Louisiana in 1870, a "United States Officer" age 31, having been born in New Hampshire. There was a wife, Martha, age 33 from Kentucky, and a child, Mary, age 12, born in Louisiana. However someone else, one Eliza Whittier from Pennsylvania applied for his Civil War Pension, in 1890 and 91. I am also awaiting those records. Strangely there was an "alias" attached to his name - Roland Forrester. Does anyone have any other information?

The compilers of a forthcoming work which will provide the most comprehensive genealogical and historical picture of the Whittier family to date seek additional contributors. We particularly wish to hear from descendants of Whittier daughters. Early family documents are also of interest. Whitchers & Whichers will be included. For further info please contact: bruce@gbso.net or mhesse@gbso.net.
I am not related to this family, but have come across a book of the Whittier genealogy written in 1873 by D.B. Whittier of Boston, Mass. It begins with Thomas Whittier born in 1620 in England to Rufus Whittier married to Emeline Currier in the 1800's. Information is not extensive, but helpful to this line. Covers mostly New England and Minnesota. I will be copying this into a PDF file. If anyone is interested in a copy I would be glad to email one.
I am trying to trace Ovando (son of Henry D. and Sarah). I find him in each Census between 1850-80 then he disappears. 1890 is a given loss (fire) and 1900 would find him to be approximately 50 yrs old.

If anyone has information on his death I would welcome it?
Info on any wife/children would also be great.

Advance thanks,
Ben Tyler (3rd great grandson of Henry D. There was small book in my grandmothers bed room dedicated to Nancy JudsonParker who with her Husband LivinstonGuilderoy Parker had left Jefferson County, N.Y , moved to Ohio,Ill. and then on to Ind. Ill , and finally to Iowa . In 1832?
The marriage of Abigail #2 ended by desertion ,death or Divorce. Help, this is a mystery tobe solved. Is there a history of chronic central nervous system in this family. ?

Hi-I was born in Rhode Island to John Whittier in 1968. My parents divorced when I was 2-John Whittier. I believe my grand parents are still in the South Kingstown or Narraganset area-I cannot recall meeting my father-I heard he had been in Ohio and even Atlanta. My sister, Martha Cassidy-about 3 to 5 years younger than I, found me in 1993 just before I moved to Connecticut and then CO. I am searching for my half sister-John Whittier is also her father.

-thanks for any information I know I do not have much to go on.

Chris Ames

Does anyone here know the full details about the remains that were moved from the small gravesite at the Whittier Homestead in Haverhill (John Greenleaf Whittier birthplace) to the large family plot in Amesbury? If not, can anyone tell me the names on ALL of the tombstones in the Whittier Family Plot in the Union Cemetery in Amesbury? The exhumations may have happened around the 1890s but details are sketchy. Thanks in advance for any leads.

When my husband and I were taking a bluebonnet drive through the Hill Country of Central Texas, we stopped at the Hill County Memorial Hospice Thrift shop in Fredericksburg.
There were 2 photos for sale there(I did not feel that I had the extra cash to buy them). There were very good framed reproductions of old photos of Elkahah Phillips Whittier, b. 17 Sept 1812 in Metheun, N. H. who was the son of Richard and Anna Lettice Phillips Whittier. He died 13 June 1903 at Empire, MN or ? Also a photo of his wife, Polly Riddle Phillips with her dates on back and the name of the person who had them reproduced. There are $25.00 each and can be obtained by calling the above thrift shop at (830)997-7688 or write: The Hill Country Memorial Hospice Thrift Shop, 520 Granite, Fredericksburg, TX 78624. How I would love to find photos like this(they are about 10x12 each) of my great great grandparents.

Our family knew that she was related to John Greenleaf Whittier by a second marriage - probably a 2nd cousin. Do you have any information on Lucy's parents? I'm trying to document her family...6 siblings? I think there should be more from the birth dates. Lucy was born 1824 in Oswego county NY and died after 1857 in MI. She md a second time to a Mr Beecher (sp?)

How are you related to Lucy?

:) Anne

Would anyone have any information about this family? This was My Great grandmother, married to angus charles whittier of the ottawa ont. area. Her name looks french/irish? I find it most interesting to know who the women have been in my past because let's face it they are the ones who instilled the 'culture' in each new generation - the language at home, the food on the table , the social graces. I already know of english, scottish, german, possibly jewish and a close association with the north american natives - Pocohantis -. This lady died in 1926 so was most likely born in the mid to late 1800's. Thanks SUE

Jackie,
I am trying to fill a gap in my ancestry - perhaps you can help. I know the ancestry from me to Vina Whittier Corll. I also have a copy of the ancestry of John Greenleaf Whittier. I am trying to make the connection from Vina to John Greenleaf Whittier. I also have found 2 different sets of lineage for JGW. I am not sure which is the one that relates to me. Can you help? JGW is supposedly my uncle - of course there would be some 'greats' in front of that - but in order to be an uncle, you must have siblings. I am really confused and need any help you or anyone else can give. Thank you.
Debi Baker
