Classification: Query
Surnames: Whittle, Bennett, Smith
My grandmother was from the province of Newfoundland. (Newfoundland was British until the 1940s) Her maiden name was Whittle.
Is there anyone out there who knows anything about the Whittle's of Newfoundland.
Clara, my great aunt, was married twice. I don't know the name of her first husband but he was lost in fog while dory fishing from a schooner off the coast of southern Newfoundland /St. Pierre, Miquelon area. I believe Clara and her first husband had a son who died at a young age.
Clara's second husband was Peter Bennett. They eventually moved to North Sydney, Nova Scotia. They had no children.
Her sister married John Henry Smith (my grandfather).
They lived on Fortune Bay. In particular, in St. Jacques when my father was born.
If you have anything to share, I would appreciate it. It doesn't have to be about these people in particular but any person by the name of Whittle who might have left Ireland or England for Newfoundland. As my maiden name was Smith, the Whittle's are my best chance to trace my father's family.
Did Whittle originate in England. Are there any Whittles who can trace back to Ireland? Sorry this is so long. I have been reading these postings since the beginning but this is the first time I have posted anything. Any information would be appreciated.
