Re: WHITTLE family of Portland Dorset England and NSW Australia

Hi Anthony
The family I am researching have come from Portland and likely across from the mainland earlier. I don't have any Shirely/ Shirley Whittles in my line. I believe that there are a number of Whittle families in Dorset and I am not sure how they are or if they are connected. I suggest that you look at your mother's parents/ grandparents and go from there. This is a good website for Dorset records. http://www.opcdorset.com/
In case you are not aware the English census records are helpful in researching your family tree. The latest one available is 1911 which you have to pay to access. Prior to that is 1901, 1891, 1881 etc. Once you get some more names in the family I suggest that you do so more postings on message boards such as these or mailing lists for areas (Rootsweb have them) as there are many helpful people around who can advise and also have access to local records. You can also purchase birth, marriage and death records as well which give you more details.

Sorry I can't help re your birth mother but good luck with your research. Often by going further back and getting more information on your line you can then find living relatives through postings such as this one.

I am looking to trace the parents of James Whittle b circa 1865 in Garswood, Lancashire. I think that I may have found his parents in a census, nearby in Ashton, but I don't have any certs to prove anything yet.

I think that James married Ann Taylor in Billinge and his Mother's maiden name might have been Foster.

The George link is where James and Ann's daughter Emma Whittle married into the George family. Emma was my Grandmother

Thanks in advance

I am new to this, but you asked if anyone was related to the Whittles of Newfoundland. My husband's gg grandfather was Thomas Whittle (b. 1851) in Newfoundland. He married Ann Troke (b. 1851) who was also born in Newfoundland. His son was John Thomas Whittle (b. 1879) He was born on PEI, but I believe the family was still in Newfoundland.
Sometime in the late 1860s early 1870s, the family moved to Anticosti Island in Quebec. Then eventually they moved to Ontario. John Thomas Whittle married Amanda Blomquist and spent some time in the US (Iowa).
The two Whittle families moved to Saskatoon, Sask. for quite a while; then some moved back to Renfrew, Ontario.
I am still trying to fill in a lot of pieces. If you have been able to, please let me know.
