Hi there John,
Yes my gg grandfather Marmaduke Whitton had siblings one of them was Robert. Our Whitton family immigrated to South Africa and later on to Rhodesia where some of them still reside today. Sadly my cousins in Zimbabwe do not know much about the family. If you have anything on the Whittons or would like to compare notes please email me on sasjakruger@bigpond.com.au Kind Regards Sasja

I'm fairly certain that the Marmaduke Whitton of whom you speak, was the brother of my paternal great-great grandfather Robert. I'll have to delve a little bit to be of any help...., if I can at all. At any rate, my folk were from in/around Beverly England.

Regards,
John Whitton (b.1947)

Hi there,
I just started to use this site. My family and I are trying to trace our family tree. I believe that the Ann Whitton you write about under #30 and her husband Andrew Dargie Bennet are my great grandparents. My Dad's name is Dargie Whitton Bennet. I just wanted to note that Bennet has one t, not two.
I noticed that this post thread is from 2005, but I thought I'd add in my input.
Thanks,
D. Hughes

Whittons from Scotland - possibly Aberdeen

Hi, I am trying to find information on "we" think John Whitton born about 1839 he married someone - no idea really and they had four sons: Robert, Marmaduke, Ambrose & unsure 4th sons name. Marmaduke whitton married Mary Rose unsure of surname. They had a daughter named Mary Rose who married John Eastwood (also from somewhere in Scotland - we assume). Mary Rose and John Eastwood immigrated to South Africa around 1894 possibly with Mary Rose's parents. John and Mary Rose had 9 children in South Africa. I would love to have some info on John Whitton, his wife and dates for his 4 sons. Thank You

I would certainly like to be able to record some additional information about David Ritchie Seath 1864- ? his wife Betsy Ferguson Whitton 1858- ? and their children. I can supply you with a file showing the information I have ( living people do not appear on my web pages) and you could provide amendments. If so you can contact me direct on crwhitton(at)googlemail.com

webpage robertwhitton.eu

Whittons of Rawcliffe and Snaith

My line of Whittons begins with my great-grandmother Blanche Whitton (1879-1956), who was bown at Gyme House, Cowick in 1879. Her mother was Mary Ward (1835-1924) and her family later lived at Bell Lane, Rawcliffe. Her father was Alfred Whitton (1833-1904), a horsebreaker of Rawcliffe. Alfred's father was Henry of Snaith (1795-1862), a sailor, and his father was William (b.1767) a bricklayer. William was the son of John (1735-1812), also a bricklayer, who was the son of William (d.1787) of Racwliffe, a mason, who's wife, Hannah Hembrough, left a will when she died a few months after her husband in 1787.

I would be very interested to hear from anyone else tracing Whitton's in this part of Yorkshire (I believe they are all descended from the first William). As yet I have been unable to locate a definite baptism for William, though there are possibles in various places, including Leeds. It is likely that his father was named Joshua, as there is a burial for a Joshua Whitton in Snaith at around the time William would have been born (early 1700s). This could suggest a link to a family living in Thornhill where the Rector was a Joshua Whitton.

Karl

Robert, hi again.
yes you are right. My Grandad CHARLES LUNT born
LPOOL 14 Sept 1851, bapt 6 March 1853, married
JANE MORLEY, ST MARYS CHURCH, EDGE HILL, LIVERPOOL, 13April 1897.
They had 6 Children:-
Marg Ann LUNT,
Samuel LUNT,
Robert LUNT,
Ellen LUNT,
Jessie LUNT,
Jane LUNT,
Only 3 of them married: Mary Ann, Samuel, and Robert.
CHARLES LUNT died 13 Dec 1912.
JANE MORLEY died 19 April 1888, peritonitus after
childbirth.

If you dont mind me saying so, you seem very efficient
at research, seeing all the info you sent me about the WHITTON family, im wondering if you could help me out with a problem Ive had with SAMUELs marriage?
for a while now.
He married MARGARET GRIFFITHS in ST SILAS CHURCH, TOXTETH PARK, LIVERPOOL on the 26 Dec 1918, just immedately after being discharged from WW1 due to mustard gas.
Now she was age 39 at the time of her marriage and so she must have been born 1879 time. Her fathers name was EDWARD GRIFFITHS, deceased, occ Ostler, but I cant for the life of me find out where she came from? and who her family were?
There seems to be so many GRIFFITHS around, being a common welch name, but as for EDWARD GRIFFITHS the dad, well there arent any of them unless ive missed out somewhere.
I forgot to tell you, Im the result of CHARLES LUNTs second marriage to my Grandmother ELIZABETH LUNT, nee HEWITT, they being my fathers mom and dad, and my grandparents, making the children from his first marriage to be my half aunts and uncles and NOT step aunts and uncles, as there is a blood relationship through my grandfather.
Hope that will fill you in and add a small extension to the WHITTON family.
Cheers Robert.
Robert, hi, you certainly have done a lot of research
on the WHITTON family, and I applaud all your efforts.
Ive printed off the 10 sheets of information for future reference, although to be honest with you, I was only
interested in GEORGINA who married my uncle ROBERT LUNT in WINNIPEG 16th JULY 1919.
On the wedding certifate it gives dads name as ROBERT WHITTON, ironworker, and moms name
as MARGARET WHITTON, nee WATTERSON and GEORGINAs occupation as "at home" 149 Garry
Street, WINNIPEG so wrongly as it turns out, I assumed that she was looking after her family, like I said earlier, my main interest was in GEORGINA.
ROBERT died 31 Dec 1929 and was buried in a Military grave in BROOKSIDE CEMETERY, WINNIPEG
age 47.
Around 1932/1935 GEORGINA married ROBERTs best friend, a man he met in the CEF in WW1, namely
EDWARD McKINNON also a Scot who emigrated to CANADA.
I dont know the exact date of their marriage, but records show that she lived in WINNIPEG in 1932 using the name GEORGINA LUNT, 3 years later she was registered as GEORGINA McKINNON.
GEORGINA died 28 Sept 1938 in hospital age 45 and
was also buried in BROOKSIDE CEMETERY, WINNIPEG.
EDWARD McKINNON died 2 Aug 1951 age 58 and he was also buried in BROOKSIDE CEMETERY, WINNIPEG, in the military plot, the same as ROBERT.
They both have gravestones, but GEORGINA didnt,
and I have a photo of all graves.
Im told that it was a usual ocurrence to be buried without a grave stone, financial reasons, whereby military graves were paid for.
I have a copy of the 1901 census for GEORGINA and family living in Scotland.
Thats it really, thank you for all the info, It will go into my files for future reference.
iTS BEEN NICE TO HEAR FROM YOU.

Looking for information on the family of Curtis A. Whitton and Ethel Christiana Faidley. Ethel was the daughter of Henry Faidley and Anna Havens. According to our records, which have not been varified, Ethel was born Sept. 1892. Curtis and Ethel had at least two sons:
1 Howard Keith Whitton born Jan 13, 1916
2 Harold LeRoy Whitton born May 20, 1919 married to Leila, last name unknown, their children Marie Whitton, Margie Whitton and Gary Whitton
Ethel's father Henry was the brother of my ggrandfather Levi Faidley. I have stories Levi told his grandchildren of the move from Pennsylvania to Iowa and the events of life in Iowa.
Sherry Faidley Healy 8315 Kromer Street, Austin, Tx, 78757

I have an original postcard photograph of “John and Edith Whitton and baby – May 1910”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in Moore (Cleveland Co.) OK, and baby looks to e about 9-10 months old.

I found the family of John F. Whitton, wife Edith M. and son Floyd Jones Whitton, in the 1910, 1920 & 1930 censuses for Cleveland Co. and Oklahoma Co., OK. John was age 33 in 1910 and 43 in 1920; Edith was 27 & 36, and in 1910 Cleveland Co. census, Floyd J. was 9 mo. on May 2, 1910. SSDI shows Floyd J. Whitton was born 6 Jul 1909. California Death Records show his name was Floyd Jones Whitton, and his mother was Edith Jones.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to John, Edith or Floyd Whitton.

The previous poster geoff whitton suggested that both John Whittons ie father and son came from Scotland. Is that correct? What was his daughters name and can you provide names of his Jamacian children and their details?

Thanks for the information. I have seen peoples occupations stated as "at home" when they have no occupation or where they are a "living in" servant such as a Housekeeper. As you will have found the Manitoba and other Canadian records are a bit difficult to obtain and the 1911 census are not indexed by family name.
Can you confirm Robert Lunts parents so that I can add them to my files. This is in case I come across any more information on that family that may relevant. My best guess would be a Charles Lunt born 1850 and his wife Jane b 1856. It looks possible that Charles remarried an Elizabeth.

best wishes Robert Whitton, Edinburgh, Scotland

George emigrated to Canada around 1902/1910
with his family
MARGARET. wife 41
GEORGINA. dau 9
MARGARET, dau 7
MARY, dau 4
they went to live in WINNIPEG CANADA.
On the 1901 census they were living in AIRDRIE, SCOTLAND.

GEORGINA married my uncle ROBERT LUNT
in WINNIPEG in 1919.
He died in 1929 and was buried in BROOKSIDE CEMETERY military section.
Around 1932/35 GEORGINA married EDWARD McKINNON again in WINNIPEG.
she died in 1938 and was buried in BROOKSIDE CEMETERY.
in 1951 her second husband EDWARD McKINNON
died and was buried in the same cemetery.and in the
military section. ROBERT LUNT and EDWARD McKINNON were close friends and lived in the same house in WINNIPEG and I suppose it was bound to happen that GEORGINA would marry EDWARD after
ROBERT died.
i have pics of the graves of ROBERT and EDWARD but poor GEORGINA was buried on the plot without a stone. maybe finances werent
stretched to having one made.
Do any of these names ring a bell as I would imagine
that MARGARET and MARY would most certainly
have married in WINNIPEG or some other place in CANADA close by, around 1925/35.
i would be pleased to hear from anyone about this family.
My great grandfather was Thomas WHITTON, born (according to the entry in the 1881 census) in about 1849 in West Mead, Ireland.

He married Sarah BRYANT on 18 Dec 1875 in Horfield Parish Church, Gloucestershire (now Bristol).

In 1881 (when my grandmother was born) the family were living in Creech St. Michael, nr. Taunton, Somerset.

I have not found anyone tracing this family name in any of the Irish genealogical web sites, and I'm not sure whether the name originates in Scotland, but the family spent some time in Ireland (when Thomas was born) or were Irish and moved to the mainland.

Thomas' father on his marriage certificate is given as George WHITTON.

Regards...Steve.
My Gran knows all the family history in Jamaica and has been desperate to trace the John Whitton who returned. The daughter who stayed was an aunty of mine. By the way, the story is that John Whitton's wife died leaving him with two children. He went to jamaica from Liverpool butbroke his leg when disembarking the ship and was unable to return.
Unfortunately I cannot provide full details as yet. I will be able to provide full details of his Jamaican issue. However, as far as I know both father and son John Whitton were born in Scotland and then moved to Liverpool.

I am very keen to locate any of John Whitton Sr or John Whitton's Jnr family.
