My understanding is that Wye is a French name - but Norman not Hugenot. English surname dictionaries state that it is derived from the name de Wye. As other people researching this family have found records dating back to the 14th century, this name predates the arrival of French Hugenots, fleeing religious persecution in the 16th century
ps thanks to Lydia for all the variations in spelling- it may explain why we have been unable to trace my ggrandmothers birth / baptismal record. Her father was illiterate, so was reliant on others to fill in the administrative forms.
