I am researching my family who is from Maryland. Ringgold is a family name. Wye Mills is in Maryland and was a huge saw mill & farm where my ancestors worked. I believen it's in Stevensville in Queen Anne County or Keny County. You might want to start there

Hi about the Wye family, i have just found relatives of my fathers which has been hard work with the help of a few others simply because of the spelling of the name Wye, for some reason my dad changed the spelling of Why ( which he was born with) to Wye i think when he married my mum, i have gone back about four generations which starts in Berks and ends in Kilburn London

We are black. My grandfather was Elmer Reed Whye. His mother was Sadie Thomas. He was from Baltimore, Maryland. He had a sister named Maude. I think she was his half sister. Her daughter is named Patricia. Elmer Whye moved to Cleveland, Ohio. That is where we are from although I live in Florida now. Thanks for any info.

Hello. We are black but there are a lot of mixed Whye's as well. My grandfather Annon was part white. I have a 17 year old son and we are planning a trip this year for the 4th of July to Towson to visit the family for the holiday. We are going to the 4th of July parade in Towson. It is a huge parade and all of the family goes. It would be cool if you guys could come there too. I bet if we compared family member names some of my older Aunties would be able to tell us if we are related. Can you tell me some of your older Whye relatives names or nicknames? I will check with Aunt Audrey or Auntie Odessa and they will help out. They are pretty much the family historians.

I have actually communicated with David before. We found out that he is our cousin as well. I don't remember exactly how. David remembers my father being ill as a child and in the hospital with rubella or something like that. My father is Roland and his nickname is Tick. Is David's son still playing basketball? I believe he played at Columbia years ago. I haven't communicated with David since the early '90s. Tell me a little about yourself. I am 35, I have a 17 year old son and I am in Kansas right now. Do you have a myspace page? I have one and you can find me under my name. I am in Topeka, KS. If you go to myspace let me know. There is a picture of my son and I when we were in Towson over the 4th of July.
Hi Terrell. I do not believe I know your mom. I am 35 years old and I am trying to find out who all of the relatives are. Ask your mom if she knows anything about family from Towson, MD. Our last name is so rare. I know my grandfather Annon Whye was of mixed race so we have many varieties of Whye's. Let me know what you find out from your mom.

He married a woman by the name of Gladys. They had several children - Roland, Audrey, Odessa, Viera, Menaris, Myrtise, Lulu, Leon, and a few more (I don't know all their names). There were a total of 13 children. My grandfather died in 1984. Can you help me trace our roots? Thank you.

I think it would be great if we could track down relatives and have a family reunion. There hasn't been one that I know of since I was a child.

My mother's father was HARRY WINTER WHY. He came from WIMBLEDON and was born around 1908. Either his parents or grandparents surname was BULL. He was stationed at CARDINGTON AIR FORCE BASE in Bedfordshire. Do you recognise his name? The reason I ask is because my mother has only seen him once and I would really like to get a photograph of him for her. All she can remember is that his hair was as black as coal.

My Wye's come from Ripley/Send & Woking - we have traced back to about 1860. My gggrandfather was Henry Wye, a lockkeeper on the River Wey. We even have an old photo of him!
I would love to know more about this family - it's the only one I have that is slightly unusual.

cheers,
Lesley

Wye/Why/ Wie/Whye -origins of name

My understanding is that Wye is a French name - but Norman not Hugenot. English surname dictionaries state that it is derived from the name de Wye. As other people researching this family have found records dating back to the 14th century, this name predates the arrival of French Hugenots, fleeing religious persecution in the 16th century

ps thanks to Lydia for all the variations in spelling- it may explain why we have been unable to trace my ggrandmothers birth / baptismal record. Her father was illiterate, so was reliant on others to fill in the administrative forms.

I am doing fairly extensive work tracing WYEs in Cambridgeshire, especially in the fens around Waterbeach. The family was established there between 1600 and 1900, except for 50 years in the 18C when they moved to the neighbouring village of Landbeach.

I am fairly sure that people set off to establish other groups as far away as Cambridge itself and Hitchin in Herts, where the common forenames Jeremiah and Robert are found.

Den

My 3xgt grandmother Ann WYE (b 1810 in St Lukes MDX and husband David WILLSON lived at 12 Wellington Row, Bethnal Green MDX when their daughter Julia was born in 1850 and in Bird Cage Walk, Bethnal Green with their 10 children in the 1851 census. I'd love to find Ann's parents and siblings.
Elizabeth
Aust.

That's not one I know of but would like to know more! Do you know which ship?

Nelson lived 1758-1805 so gives us rough dates. His flagship, HMS Victory still lies in dry dock in Porstmouth at the dockyard - I was dragged round it on several school trips!

I haven't checked the records for the Portsmouth/Portsea churches but am aware that there was a small Wye branch in Portsmouth. My database fails me because it wont allow me to search on places. I do have a marriage between a John Wye and Mary Davis though on 23 Jun 1764. It's a long shot but still a possibility that it could be this John or one of his sons/nephews?

Let me know if you find anything.

Lydia

Please let me know if anyone can trace their Whye ancestors back to Southern England. There is a definite pockets of WYEs in the Surrey area. The spelling changes to WHY as you get closer to London. But I have come across all the following versions:

WYE
WHY
WHYE
WIE
WHEY
WEAY

and I'm sure there are some others. It's always nice to make connections so please let me know if you can trace back to this area or even if you have "lost" an ancestors roots and you would like me to check my database!

Lydia
England

That is great. I guess we did make a lot of progress seeing all we had we a lot of nicknames to go by. Yeah, Tick is my daddy. Does Mike ever talk to Odessa and the others he knows? I talked to my dad last night and he said that he recognized a couple of the names you gave me and said he believed they were his cousins. That is good. My husband and I are planning a trip to Towson in the spring. Maybe we can meet there or meet you in New York. My husband is from Gary, Indiana and has never been to the east coast. I have an 11 year old son and he has only been there as a baby. We need to keep in touch. You can e-mail me directly at robinson_akk_2000@yahoo.com. I will pass the information you gave me to my dad. So I guess we've made alot of progress here. If you have any questions or other information feel free to e-mail me at Ladisza@aol.com. It may have even been one of their sisters that is your mother. My father has 6 brothers and 7 sisters in Baltimore. I know all of my aunts children (I think).
Hello and thanks very much for responding. Unfortunately, I don't have any names to offer. My adoptive parents refuse to tell me anything regarding my mother other than the fact that I have a brother that my mother kept. I don't know if he is older or younger or his name. I was placed in foster care at around 3 years of age and was placed in my parent's home at 5. I was not legally adopted until 17, and at that time I was asked if I wanted to meet my birth mother. I was angry and said no and because of that my adoptive mother feels she gave me a chance to know who my real mother was and since I refused I would have to find out on my own. I am 35 years old and I was born in Baltimore on June 4 1965, as far as I know, and my middle name is Lamont. I would appreciate any information you may have that could help me find my birth parents.
