I just came across your posting. I'm your first cousin once removed. Your grandfather is my uncle. I actually met you once, but you were probably only about 3 years old. I was visiting my Aunt Pat in Texas, and we stopped by your house to see your mom and dad. Feel free to contact me any time.

Re: A Lancaster County Fraktur

Some of you have been asking questions about this Fraktur that ended up in a museum in Lancaster County PA. This document has been
It listed the baptizm of one Stephan Weibel(actual spelling), a grandson of the first Stephan Weibel who immigrated to America from Germany in 1764.
I cannot say for sure how this fraktur ended up here, except that the basic fraktur form was originally printed in Lancaster county by John Bauman. The actual baptism occurred in Adams County, PA with the family of Stephan and Anna Maria Weibel, the parents of Stephan their first son, the baptized. The date filled in was November 14, 1798.
An uncle of Stephan, the father of the baptized, whose name was listed as Andreas WeibelAndrew) witnessed this baptism. We know that there was movement of these Weibel's (Wible's) about this time from Maryland into Adams County, and that Stephan and his family were the only ones that would
remained there to plant the Wible family for 4 generations.
Like most frakturs of this period all writing in in the old German font which I hope to be able to get translated later.
It is exciting to meet some of our first Weibels,Wible ancestors including dates through one of the few official documents I have seen from this era.

A Lancaster County Fraktur

Is anyone familar with late 18th century frakturs? I have been fortunate enough to have come across one from one of my first generation ancestors. While this is not in my direct line of ancestors, it is in the Gettysburg Weibel/Wibles line connected with the family of Stephen Weibel B1775.
This particular fraktur is the classic heart shaped German baptismal certificate in script German with red inscriptions. It was printed in Ephrata PA and the baptism was conducted by a Pastor Schroder in Adams County in 1798.
It is exciting to view such a document after 210 years and see confirmation of a piece of our geneological research on this family.
Would appreciate hearing for Weibel/Wible researchers on this.

My great great grandfather was William C. Wible of Maryland.
He was married to Viola (unknown last name)

I believe there were 4 children, John Robert, Deta Fay, Della M., Thelma and possibly a Bessie A. (Bessie could possibly be from a first marriage)

John Robert was from Albany, Athens Co, Ohio.

According to Williams census returns he was from Maryland. I don't have a town or any other information.

At this point in my geneological study of my family,I know of no connections to the paranormal through any of my ancestors. Since Rebecca Jane is not in my direct lineage, I have not spend a great deal of time looking at her or her husband's family.
As I have stated before, the Little family was very large in Adams County as you may already know. They settled in southern Adams County around Two Taverns and of course Littlestown. I don't know how what this has to do with your question, but I will add that Samuel Little as a shoemaker and Rebecca are listed in the 1870 census with 1 child,Anna living in Mt. Joy Township near Littlestown. In the 1880 census they have located in Straban township with two children Anna 16 years and Ruth 7 years.
A family tree on Ancestory.Com states Rebecca died in 1884. Another curious thing I found was a 1910 census listing Samuel at age 74 as widowed living alone in Gettysburg. Possibility of another Samuel since there were many Little's floating around Adams County at that time.

Mr. Wible thank you for your offer of help. This Rebecca Little may not be the one who was married to Samuel Little. This one died in 1882 at age 40 which would be a little off from the 1835 I have seen on the boards. A daughjter Ann who died in 1880 is also buried there. According to the census Rebecca and Samuel Little had a daughter Ann.

The Almshouse Burial Ground is on the battlefield at Gettysburg. It is near the Barlow statue on Barlows Knoll. Not too far from the radio antennae along Business Route 15. The Adams County Historical Society has records from the Almshouse. The Almshouse provided living quarters for destitute people as well as insane or otherwise mentally challenged.

My interest in Rebecca comes from my interest in the paranormal. I mean no disrespect to Rebecca or her family. I believe I may have been in contact with her spirit. I have been drawn to her tombstone on several occaisions to photograph it. I have met 5 others who were attracted to her stone.

I am trying to determine why? Was she a psychic or medium during her life? Did she die a tragic death? Any help in answering this question would be appreciated. Again no disrespect is meant to you or your family.

Jim in Dover PA

I know quite a bit about both Rebecca Jane Wible and her husband Samuel Little. Rebecca Jane was the third oldest daughter of one Joseph William Wible,B1805 in Straban Twp and is in my direct line of Wibles. Her brother Joseph Edward was my ggrandfather.
I would be happy to share more details with you if you are interested since I have dug into the genealogy of the Gettysburg Wibles for 6 generations and have other details on siblings etc.
I do not know of the death of Rebecca or of her burial in the Alms House Grounds, in fact I never heard of this cemetery.
Perhaps we can discuss this further.
Joe Wible

I am interested in this Rebecca Jane Wible who married S Little. That would be Samuel Little a cobbler from Straban Twp. They married 8 Sept 1859. Is this Rebecca Jane Little the same one buried at the Alms House Burial Ground? She died 1882. The Ann who died in 1880 may be her daughter. Have no idea where Samuel is buried. Another daughter Ruth may be the one who married William Linngg in 1889. My interest is in Rebecca. Can you tell me anything about her?

Is your early ancestor by any chance Stephen Waibel (B1742) who immigrated to Phila PA in 1766? If so we share a common ancestor. Stephen spent the rest of his life near the Maryland/PA border and in Adams County, finally moving on to western PA.
Tell me what you know about Stephen's own family in Europe and the Johannan Waibel who was with Stephen when he came to the port of Philadelphia PA.
Also another interesting statistic from another researcher was that Stephen at the time of his death in 1823 had 147 G children and GG grandchildren living!!
He was responsible for a whole lot of the Wible's today.......

Although this posting is for WIBLE, I have been researching the Wyble surname since 1994. My ancestors came from Germany to NJ around 1764. I cannot connect the Stephen and or Kathrine WIble you mention. But, that is not relevant. What is is to tie the Wyble's together. My ancestors spelled their surname Wyble, Wible, Weible,Weibel and even today I have a Weyble 5th cousin. All this is documented. My 4th GGF went to Pa around 1820 to Mifflin Co., of course he could have been there or somewhere else in Pa because he cannot be found between 1810 and 1820.

So for all the Wible's no matter how you spell it go to my site and see if any names in my database match. I have an extensive date base. There are Wible's I have not connected to myself but I keep them on hand just in case.

http://wyble.tribalpages.com

Dave

William Wible B1825, was one of the "Gettysburg, Adams County Wibles". He was an outstanding farmer in the 19th century who owned much land near Gettysburg and had a thriving farm equipment business.
My question is what are his roots? I have found little on census data or other information to tie him in with other Wibles in the area. Anyone help?

I am interested in getting genealogy information from others who may have descended from one of the other "Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Wibles" from the 19th century. I have good history on all direct descendents of Joseph E. Wible B1839, which was my own direct line of ancestory, but know very little of descendents from the 7 brothers and sisters of Joseph E. Wible.
This particular line of Wibles descended from Stephen Weibel(1), Stephen Weibel(2), and Joseph W. Wible(3).

Joseph B. Wible

More Info of the Gettysburg Wibles-RE: E mail of Nov 2003

I attended a funeral recently for an aunt whose ashes were buried in the Evergreen Cemetery at Gettysburg. I could not help but notice the large number of Wibles buried in one area. According to a computer survey, there are a total of 38 Wibles buried there. Most lived during the 1800's and were buried through the 1940's. Many I have tracked down as my ancestors.
My question is: Does anyone know if there are any authoratative books or publications on the Wibles of Adams county during this period? Currently there are only 2 Wibles listed in the Adams County phone directory, so there are few to carry on the name there.

I also discovered that the Belch, Sheads and, Cope (Emmor Cope was my G-Grandfather) families wove through my Gettysburg genealogy during that period.

Your assumption is correct. My father's mother was the daughter of Emmor B. Cope. Emmor and his family moved from Chester County in the late 1800's to Gettysburg when Emmor received a call to unravel some of the problems at the Gettysburg Battlefield. He first served as head engineer for the development of the park that we know today. He continued in several positions there including superintendent until his death in 1927.
There exists a large amount of Cope trivia in the archives at the Battlefield. There are many papers and maps preserved there.
I do not have a great deal of info on the Spackmans. Perhaps you can let me know what specifically you are looking for in your historical study.

I am not sure how much specific help I may be other than letting you know I have inherited assorted family records from my father and uncle (both passed on and grandchildren of E.B.Cope).
I do have a copy of a pamphlet describing the old Cope mill and machine-works near West Chester. I had always wanted to get down that way and see if anything is still there (I live in Lancaster PA. and am active in the geneology research of the Wibles family from their Gettysburg connections.)
I have bits and pieces of EB Copes' activities in the Army as he arose from Sargent to Colonel and served as chief map maker in the army's topographic division under Gen Warren. I have copies of several letters and his promotion and furlough records. Other than a few pictures in the post retirement Gettysburg timeframe, I have no military pictures.
Since you have read the Thomas Schaeffer essay you know most of his contributions to designing and helping to building the Gettysburg Battlefield that we all know today.
Finally I have a copy of his obituary and know he is buried with a lot of my ancestors in the Gettysburg Evergreen Cemetery.
Perhaps we can get together sometime after the holidays?? My E-mail address should be available thru this bulletin board.

The Missing Wible Links in PA.

With the beginning of a new year, I thought I would continue dialog with those doing genealogy research in "Weibel-Wible" surnames in PA. I want to focus on the missing links that many of you have referred to covering roughly a time period from 1764 to 1799 and the Stephen Weibel (later Wible) clan as they slowly migrated West to settle in what would become Westmoreland County.
Many of us with Wible ancestory have referred to the name Stephen Wible as our patriarch who immigrated to America around 1764, but only very sketchy information has ever been listed on the 1764-1799 time period.
My own interest in to piece together facts which would follow the movement of one of Stephen's 10 children (??) also a Stephen (B1775), who ended up in what would become Adams County PA. I have very little hard data to indicate how Stephen(2) actually got there. However it was here that my Wible ancestors through Stephen were planted for four generation thru 1941.
Many of you have mentioned roots on this bulletin board from the other 9 Stephen Wiebel children with many ancestors ending up outside the boundaries of PA.
Perhaps by reopening dialog that focused on this 1764-1799 time period, we can all benefit by piecing together the genealogy puzzle as it relates to our own ancestors.

J.
I am a decendent of the Wible's (probably spelled Weibel in the 1700's) family that came to America from Europe in 1764 and settled in the state of Pennsylvania. I have good documentation for my ancestors who settled in Adams county back to 1835, but am looking for some concrete genealogy information for the founding fathers who came from Germany on the ship Brittania in 1764, migrated across Pennsylvania leaving traces of Wibles in all the counties as they travelled West toward Pittsburgh.
Maybe your Wibel research will help me. Please let me know more about the research and book.

Re: WIBEL Research

Like you have stated, concrete information about the movement of Stephen and John Weibel between the years 1764 and 1815 is very scarce. What I have concluded from my own studies of census records, pieces of the puzzle from many genealogy researchers on Ancestery.com, and details on my own branch of the Wibles which begun with a son Stephen of Stephen #1 B1775, who died in 1815 in Adams county PA. is that we may never be able to substantiate the actual migration route taken by Stephen #1 during that period.

Living most of my life in south central PA, and being interested in the early PA maps and Indian trails as well as family genealogy, one could approximate how this branch of the Wibles could have been "planted" between 1764 and 1815 as Stephen #1 worked his way West in Pennsylvania to settle and eventually die in Westmoreland County, PA. Would anyone be interested in my putting together a personal unofficial narration on this?

The reason I had mentioned the date 1815 is because I have a copy of a warrant issued in Adams County from my ggg grandmother Mary who was petitioning Adams County Orphans Court for assistance for her young children who had lost their father (Stephen #2)that year. One of those children, Joseph William was my gg grandfather.

This edition was published in Hamburg in 1887, and is from the Augsburg city archives.

Marlene BRENNAN of Queensland obtained a copy from the archives, and scanned it to PDF.
George, Solomon, Levi Wibel of Indiana

I am currently vacationing in Indiana and I purchased a copy of John Nelson Wibel's record of death from the Wells County Health Department in Bluffton, Indiana. It lists John's birth date as 25 May 1851 in Miami Co., Indiana and his death as 28 Dec 1938 in Lancaster Twp, Wells Co., Indiana. It also lists his burial in Murray Cemetery. The document has John's father as Levi Wibel of Indiana and mother Nancy Taylor of Indiana. I double checked in the funeral home records by Elzey-Dickey-Haggard and it lists the same information. I am thinking that Levi could have been a brother of George & Solomon or possibly a son of George. I found John's obituary in the Evening News Banner, Bluffton, Indiana, in the Wednesday, Dec 28, 1938 edition (pg1, col4). But doesn't list his parents names. I thought that George might be the father of John Nelson Wibel, but after obtaining John's death record, it lists Levi Wibel and his wife Nancy Taylor as his parents. I also found in the Ohio marriage index (1789-1850) that Solomon Wibel married Rosannah Mills on 19 Nov 1837 in Knox County, Ohio. I also found in the Wills Record, Miami County, Indiana (1843-1900) pg 267 a will for Solomon Wibel dated 2 Apr 1883 and recorded 20 June 1883 for wife Rosannah, children Hiram Marion, Albert, Thomas H., and Margaret E. (Wibel) Baker (married Lewis Baker).

If anyone has more information on George, Solomon and/or Levi Wibel please let me know.

Cheers

Bruce MacDonald

URL - http://userweb.suscom.net/~clandonald1/genealogy1.html

Wible DNA testing

I was wondering if anyone of the Wible descendants has done any DNA testing. I am a descendant of Jacob Weybol/Weibel. Jacob and his son Adam Sr. sailed on the ship "Crown" when Adam Sr. was 5. Adam Jr (1761, PA) was my 5th great grandfather. I think it would be interesting to see if all the Wibles were linked.

Thanks
Judy

Re: George Washington Wible

I have been assuming that the info you gave from the 1850 Census is correct, Elizabeth being his mother and all of the siblings.
I agree that his father prob died around 1848 or 49ish since the youngest is only around 1 year old...
Any other thoughts?

George Washington Wible

Born: in Penn. 1831 and died on Dec 11 1908. Married to Eliza(beth) Gardy (1836-1923). Children include Joseph, George Jr, Christiann, William, Ida, Hannah, John and Lizzie. Does anyone have any other information on him? I can't find anything about his parents or siblings and therefore cannot connect to any of the earlier Wible's.
