Wick in Victoria, Australia

Anton Wick was my great great great grandfather I believe. His father was Christopher Wick, but that is all i know about him except that his wife was Margaret Lathwell. I am assuming Christopher Wick was born and died in Germany. But I don't know for sure.

Anton Wick
Born: 1826
Jrohartoghom, [county], Hessen, Germany
Died: 1893
Beechworth, Victoria, Australia

There is a very famous bushranger in Australia called 'Ned Kelly' and Ned Kelly was apart of a gang called 'The Kelly Gang' back in the 1800's in Beechworth, Victoria. Anyway, Anton Wick was walking in the town and was taken hostage in a way by this Gang as they forced him to knock on the door of a known policeman and when he opened the door, they shot the policeman dead. Anyway, this connects him to a famous Kelly Gang story, a popular interest for Australians.

Anton and his wife Sarah Kate Heur (German) gave birth to several children including my great great grandfather, William Wick and then his son is Ronald George Wicks who is my great grandfather and then his son is William Wicks who is my grandfather.
The name changed from 'Wick' to 'Wicks' sometime around Federation (well a fter 1900) in Australia. Don't know why.

If anybody has any more ideas about this family line, please let me know.
gjaner84@hotmail.com

Hi!

I have a third gr grandmother named Barbara Wick Kallenbarger. She married Christopher Kallenbarger in Germany, but I don't know where. The Kallenbargers were probably from Bavaria and the Wick family was from Baden. The family was in Hamilton County, OH until the late 1850s, then they moved to Louisa County, Iowa. Barbara died between 1870 and 1880. The census indicates birth in 1822.

Here is my family homepage:
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/c/h/Robert-L-Sc...

Barbara was the second wife of Christopher Kallenbarger. She was the mother of my 2nd gr grandmother Mary Elizabeth Kallenbarger Schneider.

Thanks!

Robert Schneider

Lemuel Wick of Southampton (Long Island) NY was a Rev War veteran who, like many other veterans, migrated first to Washington County PA and then to the Youngstown Ohio area, where he died in 1813 (his wife Debroah Lupton also died there in 1809). The family line from Caleb, Henry, and William Wick back to Job Wick is given in "History of Trumbulkl and Mahoning Counties" (Ohio, 1882) Vol 1 pp 437-8.

Re: Martin Wick

My relationship to the Wick family is indirect. My great-great-grandmother, Wilhelmine Duering/Doering, was married to Carl Wurdelmann, who was first married to her sister Christine. Carl Wurdelmann's sister was Anna Maria Wurdelmann, who married the Martin Wick who settled in Sibley County, Minnesota.

When my family first came to the U.S., they settled in McLeod County, where I believe John Wick had already settled. From what I have heard from my mother's cousin, there was apparently a lot of contact between our two families. I have a Xerox copy of an old photo of the Wicks' house near Stewart.

Also, your John Wick had another brother Ludwig Wick, who settled in Round Prairie township in Todd County, Minnesota. My family left McLeod County and moved to Round Prairie around 1898/99, and I assume it was because Ludwig/Louis was already there. From church records I can tell there was a lot of interaction between my family and the Wicks in Round Prairie.

By the way, if you look for Ludwig Wick on ancestry.com, you are most likely to find him as "Louis Wiecks." Other relatives there spelled the name "Wicks."

Please e-mail me privately at uebelrg@aol.com; I think it would be easier for the sharing of information.

Looking forward to chatting with you more.

Bob Uebel

I am looking for more info on Adam Wick born in Hesse abt 1830/1831.
He immigrated to America abt 1847 and is found living in Blue Island Illinois.
He married a Sophia and had several children. This has been a dead end
for me and since there are several lines of Wicks coming from Hesse I was hoping to connect with one. Thanks,

Wick DNA Project

OK - it's only partly true. We've primarily focused on Vick at
http://worldfamilies.net/surnames/v/vick/index.html.

But since finding a pretty unique YDNA result we realized our more distant cousins may be WICKs not VICKs. After all the Germanic W is said as a V. Our haplogroup Q result points toward Vikings. And we're not finding matches for any other VICKs than the descendants of our forebare.

Wick is only somewhat less common in Great Britain than Vick, which is not very common.

So come on WICKs, check it out. Maybe we'll even find some distant German WICK cousins.

I wish I had started this while my grandparents were alive.

I am trying to trace the Wick family back through Germany. My great-great grandfather was John Wick. Born in Baden, Germany. So far i have found him on the US census back to 1860 but not on the 1850 one. So I am assuming that he immigrated in that decade but cannot find any immigration records showing him.

I also have conflicting birth dates of 1817 and 1824

He moved to Darke County Oh and was his wife's name was Lydia.

If anyone has any further infomation I would be grateful.

She was married to a Fred Wick, who, as I recall, died in Dayton in 1958. She died in CA in October 1972. Regina was a niece of my greatgrandfather. If anyone is related, please e-mail me. I haven't been working on my family tree or checked the message boards for several month.
I haven't been able to trace the Wick family back through Germany but I did find John and Lydia Wick in Franklin Twp., Darke Co., Ohio in the 1850 census records. He is listed as John Wicks not Wick. John was age 32 and Lydia age 16. Lydia's parents are also listed in this record, Wm and Catharine Hendricks. If interested I have some dates but not sure they are correct. I will try to check the message boards more often. Bonnie

Re: Stod S. Wick

Hi Larry,

Stod S (Stoddard Stevens) Wick was my great-great-great uncle. He worked in banking like much of the family, he and Ellen are last recorded in the 1880 census in Chicago, a ways from his hometown of Greenville, Mercer Coo., Pa. (NW Pa.) He was born about 1834, his father (my great-great-great grandfather) James Rowland Wick (1807-1895) was the local banker as well as sometime Justice of the Peace. Stod's nephew (son of his brother Alvin, my ggf) was also Stoddard Stevens (1873-1945) a county sheriff in Iowa and later a Minn. farmer. Stoddard was likely named for a storekeeper and clergyman of the same name from Trumbull Co. Ohio (James R.'s hometown.

Hope this helps!

Paul S. Wick
