I have information on the Wickes line in Galveston, Texas. The Wickes's in Texas descend from George Wickes of Cairo, New York. I have letters from Albert Wickes written in Texas in 1840 -1 to his father in New York State. More information can be provided if you are still extant/interested.

Bob Wickes

Landenberg, PA

Keith - Since your grandfather is still alive, you need to go talk with him (presuming he is still capable). Probe his memories - of his parents and grandparents, what they did for a living, siblings, childhood, where he lived, where he went to school, church atttended. Do the same with your folks and their siblings. Once you get that information, it is easier to go back and get additional "proof" (e.g., birth certificates, church records). Do it now before he, and his memories, die. Good luck!

Jane Wicks

Am looking for information regarding a Wicks family in OH that originally came from NY. My direct line is Jane Wicks, born Jan 1815, Utica, NY. I found her on the 1860 census in Painsville, OH with an Alexander Wicks- born about 1827 NY, and his mother Mary E. I am thinkging (hoping) that this is her brother and her mother, but have been unable to locate any more information about the family. I found Alex's wife on the 1870 census living with my Jane and her family, so I am assuming both Alex and Mary died at that time. Any of this sound familiar to your lines?

I find only one Alden in my Wickes database. I don't think she is direct for you, however it indicates there is an Alden family near and there may be other connections. I list Hannah/Johanna Wickes (youngest sister to Silas Wickes who married Elizabeth Rusco) married to David Nelson, whose father's first wife was Mary Alden. David Nelson's youngest brother is George b March 1777 but he shares David's mother Mary Rose who was the father's second wife. Hope this wasn't too convoluted to understand.
Janice

I do have Thomas Weekes (future generations changed spelling to Wickes) married to Isabella Harcoutt/Harcourt. Four generations later, I have Silas Wickes married to Elizabeth Rusco, circa 1780s. The name George appears quite often in the Wickes family line. George Wickes (my GGrandfather) also had a son George. Unfortunately, I no Alden family members in my research.

The two brothers did have a vaudeville act-lived in NYC-are decendents of John Wickes who was one of the founders of Rhode Island. Bill and John's father Stephen Wickes was married to Mary Barry-they lived in Providence and I visited the house they once owned. James, my grandfather, became a postmaster general in NY. He was married to Estelle (Margaret) Birmingham and they had three children: Marcelle, Margaret and Norman. Norman was my father.

Well, I still don't recognize your recent ancestral names, but if you are a descendant of Thomas Weeks, born 1612, then we are indeed extended cousins! My line starting with Thomas is as follows: Thomas, son Thomas, son Joseph, son Daniel, sons Zophar & Silas, then Zophar's son David married Silas' daughter Phebe, to their daughter Harriet who married into my Gregory line. My line remained in New York state at least until almost 1900.

What is your line of descent? I can e-mail a family report to you with however much you would like on this family.

I'm sorry but it seems that I missed your message some time ago. No, I do not have any info on a Silas Wickes who married Susannah Vanderhoef. I do show Silas Wickes who married Esther Pine. This Silas was a younger son of Joseph & Hannah Wickes and appears to have been named after an older brother who died young. I list Silas and Esther marrying in 1765, so your Silas might be a late child. Maybe you have found more info on your family by this time. I am willing to share what I have if you know that you connect. Good luck in your search.

Re: Wickes Family 1600-1800s, MA, CT NY

Hi Laurie,

I don't find the two Wickes names you mentioned in my data base. However I do show a William Harvey Wickes so we could be connected. You may be a descendant of a sibling of one of mine, and I just don't have your line listed.

Where is your Wickes family located? And what dates are we looking at for these individuals?

What I have found in records as far as the variations in the name, is that the original brothers/cousins who came to the U.S. came as Weeks, but at least one decided to change to Wickes to differentiate his family from other families living nearby on Long Island. I seem to recall that references to that family name in England (which I haven't tied into yet) often use Wickes -- with or without the "e" and sometimes with a "y" instead of an "i". So it seems that variations were common throughout the history of the family name.

Please let me know any more details you may have of your family and we can see if we are extended cousins!

Janice

Esther has been reported on several documents by my maternal grandfather, Bert Harpp, as his mother. His father was Eldrid Harpp. I don't think Eldrid and Esther were ever married. Esther was listed on the 1880 census as "Hester" working as a servant for Rodney Eaton in Caldwell, Warren County, NY. There is speculation that she was pregnant with Bert at the time she worked there. She was still using her maiden name. Can not find a record of her son Bert's birth, or anywhere where Esther died or was buried. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Colin, I am interested in the TetburyWickes family if only to eliminate names not from my family in the locality! I have been collecting information for over 30 years so would be interested in swopping information if you are interested. For a Wickes of Tetbury 'Coat of Arms' have a look at <http://www.wykes.org/heraldry> then go to the Gloucestershire page. There is an interesting connection between the Tetbury Wickes and the Wickes family in London who had a similar shield.

janice

well, i think one of MY 'ancestors' who tried to keep a FAMILY record must have gone to 'sleep' along the way.
BUT, in any 'event' i probably DO think 'we' are distant cousins. the thomas week(es)(s) of which 'my' family claims as their ancestor spent his time in watertown, ma..wethersfield, ct., stamford, ct. and huntington, l.i. ny.
what is SO funny, seems to me...is that 'this' side of the family was supposed to be the BEST documented!! what a joke!! i would be MOST appreciative IF you don't mind me taking you up on your OFFER to forward YOUR genealogy onto me. perhaps it'll clear some things up. in your recollection, does the name isabella harcutt ring a bell??? OR a martha (maria) tuthill?? my great grandfather, henry dunn wickes spent 'time' in yates county, new york...pen yan, and reading before removing to michigan with his brother edward noyes wickes!! ENOUGH. hopefully, after i've 'perused' your ancestral chart...I MIGHT be able to be of a CLEARER mind!!! (hah)
where do MOST of your famly live now???
thanks SO much for your patience!!

laurie

I am looking for any information on an Alden connection to Rusco family. My great....uncle was a George Wickes. Direct line was Thomas Wickes and Isabella Harcourt, Huntington. Where do my ancestors enter the Rusco line?
I have heard this Alden connection was not correct?
Thank you
V. Koch

Dear Janice Taylor,

Thank you for your prompt reply.

Silas Wickes was a cousin. Hannah is a very old Wickes name. My mother's family was Wickes or Weekes as it was sometimes spelled. I am back to Doomsday book and know the Wickes came over in 1635 (5 brothers). One drowned after arriving in Plymouth Bay. The others went West, South, East (mine) and West. They were quite a family. Now I am trying to go back ealier in America.
Thanks again.
Vivian Koch
